Asus Slim Blu-ray Drives Feature A Wicked X

We don’t know what the LED X found on the side of this Asus Blu-ray drive is supposed to symbolise to the people of Earth, but we aren’t ones to argue with pointlessly glowing aesthetics.

The Asus SBC-04D1S-U External Slim is one of only a few USB-based Blu-ray drives that reads BDs at 4.8x, plus it can read/write DVDs as well. (Sadly, it’s tray-loading.)

While there’s no price/release date at this time, keep in mind that USB drives like this one tend to rely on your computer for the actual Blu-ray decoding. So while the SBC-04D1S-U will technically play Blu-rays, it’s up to Cyberlink software powered by your processor/video card to render the data. [Asus via EverythingUSB]

@misterWho3GS: +1...makes this almost a waste of a nice design...

@aZn sensaZn: oh yeah. I'm sure a lot of "aZn bro's" go to Microsoft conferences. And come on... a Microsoft conference? Do you sell vacuums on the side?

@misterWho3GS: so... you don't get tired of telling her she's the boss everyday?

  • ridgecity

@TheAlmeida: I've seen writable br discs aren't there recorders already?

It disappoints me that this is just a BD drive. The design would work great for HTPC use.

@Geph_knows_more: Aw, that's for wusses and people who want to have sex and cooked food. I let my wife know who's boss.

@IUHoos: It's the dot in the in the middle that does it for me.

    @imTheKing:
I received multiple mini CDs at the last Microsoft conference I went to and numerous devices provide drivers on mini CDs. Absolute statements are absolutely not your friend. Fail.

Personally, I prefer tray loaders because they usually have a manual eject whereas slot loaders usually do not (note the lack of an absolute statement like "slot loaders do not have manual eject").

Regarding the product, it's actually pretty terrible considering it looks to be the same body/construction as their existing external CD-RW drives; although very attractive, they suffer from being too light. Don't be surprised when you see this drive dance around your desk as the disc spins up.

That may mean Windoze only. Not aware of any Cyberlink equivalent for Mac or Linux.

@facepuncher: if you put tape over them to make them look "angry"

i'm referring to "eyelids" since i couldn't think of what they were called off the top of my head. i'm eating lunch, memory takes a back seat for cheesesteak consumption

  • facepuncher

@metaslugx: that's a common misconception. See, it's not just racing stripes that add horsepower, as ANY stickers/lights add more power. unless they are headlights, then it only adds more power if you put tape over them to make them look "angry"

  • Geph_knows_more

@Geisrud: I learned, never argue with my wife...

  • metaslugx

@facepuncher: Yeah, but does it qualify as racing stripes?

Oh great. More pointless power wastage.

My home office looks like Close Encounters all night long.
The blue LED thing's totally outta hand.

I'll bet the cord hookups are still in a totally stupid and clumsy location, all to preserve the 'form factor.'

@Xjep: well for one, no one uses mini dvds / cds. I made the big mistake of making mini dvd's for my first motion portfolio and that was the last time.

Slot loading drives are cleaner and you don't have to have the damn pop out or in trays which tend to be flimsy.

    imTheKing

  • Xjep

Whats wrong with tray loading I rather like that than slot loading players/drives plus it can use mini cd/dvd's

  • Tolgak

I'm waiting for the day when electronics designers realize that it's nice to be able to orient a device in any direction without the use of a stand.

I get it, nice looking things sell well... but for once I'd like a gadget that's a plain old rectangular prism (especially if it is to go on my desk).

  • TheAlmeida

The wait for a drive that writes BDs is already depressing me. The more I think about it, the more I want everything to be downloadable.

X marks the spot... where you should hit the damn thing when you get a disc read error

Blue lights always go good with any electronic... Especially since it is black, makes it look good :D

  • facepuncher

That glowing X probably gives it 4-5 horsepower.

Honestly, Asus usually makes good products (from my experiences), so I'm sure this is no different.

  • Geisrud

I learned very early on from my wife; never to argue with pointless aesthetics.

  • IUHoos

If i was in the market to buy a blu-ray player, that random glowing X would probably be the reason i bought this over other players. Floats my boat it does.
