New Undersea Cable Lands In Australia, Cheaper Internet Come September

On Tuesday, our good friend and ex-Giz editor Seamus was down at Collaroy in Sydney to welcome the arrival of a new underwater cable that promises to boost Australia’s internet capacity by 50 per cent and offer competition to the Tier 1 telcos for cheaper broadband.This is the same cable we watched the heroes lay in the Tyco Durable ship back in March.

According to Shay, everything should go online around the September mark, although from his Midnight Update video, it looks like a pretty swish setup already. And when it does go online, we can expect either much cheaper broadband deals, or much higher data allowances for the money we’re paying now. I for one can’t wait.

    “And when it does go online, we can expect either much cheaper broadband deals, or much higher data allowances for the money we’re paying now.”

    I’ll believe it when I see it.

    This appears to be great but i doubt it will change anything when it comes to what isp charge. isp are too used to charging this much so what will likey happen is the new isp will charge very similair to the other isp’s at the moment.

    ps

    for F*CKS SAKE does this page have to refresh every f*kken 5 seconds so i cannot finish watching the video

    Gotta love the cynics… I get the feeling they didn’t even watch the video. I was cynical too until the facts hit the table — this is the first time an independent international pipe is coming into Australia. As the CEO said, this isn’t about “cutting 20%” off current prices, it’s about a complete price restructure because they’re able to cut the Tier-1s out of the equation and get direct access to overseas data. No more monopoly bottleneck means false limitations can be removed.

    I’m not convinced about price drops, but I am convinced we’ll start to see much higher data limits from some ISPs.

    I hope its both…im paying for ADSL2+ and im only getting half of that speed were i am. Dudes, im only 4km away from the exchange rate, for full potential id have to camp out in front of the fucking thing with my laptop. Im fucking pissed having to pay for something that im not even close to getting…

    Would be amazing if we had both. $24,95 for 120 GB at 20 MBps?

    ;__;
