I’d have to say that HAL is much less evil. For anyone that knows anything about the Odessey series, HAL was programmed to lie and ‘freaked out’. So technically he was just programmed to kill and hence, not evil. He also killed the crew while in stasis, which is quite humane. As for Commander Poole, if you’ve read the book 3001 then you’d know that Poole is discovered floating in space and is reanimated, so technically he wasn’t killed at all. ;)
