Android Cupcake Coming To HTC Dream Owners Soon…ish

If you’re an HTC Dream owner, you’re probably all excited to get your hands on the new cupcake update. But when are Optus going to release it? We contacted Optus to find out, and were told by an Optus spokesperson:

* Android 1.5 software will be released to Optus for testing in coming weeks.
* Once released Optus will conduct testing to ensure the optimal performance of the software for our customers.
* HTC Dream owners on the Optus network will automatically receive the upgrade over the air once testing is completed.

So, a couple of weeks for Optus to get their hands on it, an unspecified amount of time for them to test it, and then they’ll push it to you automatically. While it would be nice to have a firm date, knowing that it’s coming is at least slightly reassuring…

So far I am very dissapointed, I really thought that we would receive the 1.5 update roughly around the same time as the US. Worse yet I really miss having voice dialling, they have it in the US, this is the main feature I miss from ALL my old phones. Come on HTC/Optus hurry the hell up!

Rang Optus today on other matters, the CSR knew nothing about any upgrade. Looks like we might be waiting a while for the upgrade.

I hope the reported battery life improvement is major as its the one drawback to this phone.

Dissapointing and would totaly understand that it would be Optus’ Fault (speaking of fault WHAT DO THEY NEED TO TEST? Surely Google’s tech team would be way more advanced and capable).

Worst customer service in the world, along with getting overpriced and old technology here in Aus.

Yet Blizzard is letting Aus & Usa Beta Test Starcraft II ??? Optus -5 Bliz +5

i agree strongly with dissapointed android lover, i myself am fair tempted to walk into the optus shop and demand they swap my phone for an iphone, i myself was all for htc believed it had so much potential, heard all the hype but this wait for the upgrade has pushed me over the edge with htc, wish me luck with the optus people now haha

I am in the same boat. I almost want to call up Optus and get them to cancel my contract and change it to a iPhone instead.

Just sent an email through to Gizmodo and Engadget asking them to pressure Optus into comment about this.

Also, I’ve put through an official complaint to Optus, and I invite you to do the same – https://www.optus.com.au/portal/site/aboutoptus/menuitem.8ec78f21a99f2c66d0b61a108c8ac7a0/?vgnextoid=200c2feef3162010VgnVCM100000c8a87c0aRCRD&vgnextchannel=235e58ebbebd1010VgnVCM100000c8a87c0aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default.

I put in a complaint at the address suggested by Angelo above, and I just got a call from Allison at Optus saying that their tech people are still testing the 1.5 update but they are expecting to provision the update to HTC Dream owners near the end of July.

So, not long to wait hopefully!
