This Is What Happens When a Train Hits Nuclear Waste Containers at 160KPH

On one side, big train running at 160kph. No driver. On the other, heavy duty containers with nuclear waste. What would happen? Boom. That’s what happens. But, surprisingly, not as bad as you can imagine.

Crash testing on nuclear containment is always awesome. Basically the train is a feasible example of the most extreme punishment this thing has to withstand.

Another good one is the fighter jet vs 4m of concrete nuclear containment. The fighter jet was traveling at something like Mach 0.7, and -disintegrates- on impact.

I’m not really sure what you thought would happen but nuclear material won’t explode in a big way (as in mushroom cloud) unless the nucleus is split (no room to explain go to wikipedia). Nuclear material (uranium) will spontaneously combust if it is exposed to moisture and is in a small enough quantity (i.e. when the train hit it was turned to dust and combusted).
