IBM Patents Bionic Armour That Gives Humans Ability To Dodge Bullets
Believe it or not, IBM has filed for a patent on tech that heightens our reflexes so that we could, theoretically, dodge bullets like Neo in The Matrix.
This “Bionic Body Armor” would continuously scan the area for incoming projectiles. If one is detected, the system would deliver a shock to the muscles causing a swift, reflexive action away from the bullet.
The present invention relates generally to the protection of an individual against a projectile propelled from a firearm. More particularly, the present invention relates to a body armour system and its method of use that is capable of detecting a projectile propelled from a firearm, computing the trajectory of the projectile, and moving the individual out of the path of the projectile to avoid being hit.
Damn, that might actually work. I mean, think about how fast you move your hand away from a hot stove. Would that kind of movement actually be fast enough to dodge a bullet? [Patent via The Firearm Blog]

I’d imagine the system is designed to make small movements, so that it would more effectively use existing bullet proof armour that a person would be wearing. A tiny twist might mean a bullet is more likely to land against the chest, rather than neck or face for example.
If it makes large movements, it’s potentially dangerous for the wearer (the required motion would have to have considerable force and probably not be terribly comfortable) and is only really useful for shots directed at maybe limbs and even then, only ones from reasonable distances (say, over 100 meters).
Even then, A .223 or something similarly small can push 2000+ feet/second no problems. Something more professional or designed to go faster can probably double that. Making such a system (if it were actually useful) less matrix like and more like what I originally described.
I can just picture people throwing rocks at people wearing this armour for fun ^^
