PlayStation Home Open Beta Is Out Now

6:46AM December 12, 2008 | Mark Wilson

The PlayStation Home Open Beta (77MB) can now be downloaded onto your PS3 from the XMB (it’s not a firmware update). Enjoy your second third life.

AU: If it works, that is. My copy doesn’t want to kick past the “Don’t turn off the system while we’re writing to the hard drive” message. How about you guys?

I was able to download and install it but I couldn’t login, it kept giving me an error like ‘The connection to the server has been lost’

It took me ages, but I got to the “Signing in…” message. After lots of time outs and connection errors that is. It usually gives me a connection error for the sign in, offers to retry, then does nothing. So then I quit out and try again, with the same result.

I got past the download/install (after 3 errors), but keep getting a time out error ‘signing in…’ Currently still ‘signing in’ but have been stuck for 10 minutes so not looking good. Too many people on the system?

With regards to the issue – “Don’t turn off the system while we’re writing to the hard drive” – I had that same message when I tried Home last night. I fixed it after re-assigning my controller as Controller 1. For some reason it got re-assigned to Controller 2. Try that and press ‘X’.

I got a close beta code a couple of weeks ago and it was working fine then. But since I found nothing even slightly interesting inside, I haven’t been back since.
I can on assume that the connection issues you are experiencing is due to world-wide server overload.
I might try again a few months after things have settled down and see if services have improved at all.

Tried it briefly this morning before work. Managed to install it straight up, went through the disclaimer crap but get network connection error when trying to actually connect like the other posters. Will try later and fingers crossed it works.

i just got on, went through the tutorial had a bit of a walk around, everything seems to be fine, although a little slow on my crappy optus adsl 2 connection. gotta go to work now, so ill have a proper look around once i get home tonight

ps: this thing is gonna be a big downloader, the 77mb only gets you your apartment, every other map is another download, 40-60 mb each

The article should have been titled, ‘The 10 most Negative things about Home; in My Opinion’. More actual info and less personal opinion would have saved me searching through looking for facts about this service. I could have asked Bill Gates himself and he would have added something costructive and useful.
