Jon Stewart Trashes Black Friday, Succumbs to Lego Millennium Falcon

If you didn't watch Jon Stewart yesterday, check out his hilarious take on Black Friday, recession, and people's stupidity fighting for silly things. His purchases: a wobble-headed C-3PO doll and, get ready, the Lego Millennium Falcon*.

The Kessel run isn't the most obscure geek quote, but it's still wierd hearing from the host of a show.

Curse it all. I'll say it if no one else will. Jesus... wha'happened?
A wise man (Charly Gordon?) once claimed that "with great power comes great responsibility." After watching your excitement—and organizational how-to videos—regarding Man's Greatest LEGO Kit, I endeavored to follow in your footsteps and do likewise. And dontcha think lil' Jonny Stewart reads Gizmodo? Sure he does. Do you want to let him down, too?
I've soldiered on, but just barely. My sad truth: life would be just a little sweeter if I could see the Falcon assembled by the great JD.

So we should blame the three deaths on the recession right?

You got to feel bad for the families of the people who were killed, especially the Walmart worker. I feel bad and all but it is just so damn funny.

@armendni: Well, the recession is certainly making people more desperate.
I don't think we can blame the deaths on the recession itself, but we can blame it on their reactions! For example, when the Walmart employee was killed and the police came in to tell people to leave the store, they kept shopping. Why? Because they HAD to have the discounts and deals. HAD to.
So while the recession isn't to blame for killing people, it is making us into even bigger materialistic pigs.

@Apparatus Ex Somnium Design:
You underestimate the power of Black Friday. There are people who _live_ for that day, there are families that do coordinated strikes on several stores at the same time, and psychos who will resort to physical violence if you're about to walk away with the last copy of something they absolutely must have. The only thing more surprising than the fact that someone got crushed beneath a surging mass of Black Friday doorbuster shoppers is the fact that it doesn't happen more often.

I feel really bad about the Walmart guy - but the other 2 were shot over some gang dispute - nothing to do with getting the last Elmo Toy. Could have happened anywhere, on any day of the year.

shhhhhh...don't alert the media of it. It will ruin their attempt to point blame at anything for something totally unrelated, and then they won't be able to create a story about it. God forbid they go out and do a story on the Salvation Army volunteers who each year freeze their balls or va jj's off to collect pocket lint and wadded up receipts from stingy shoppers. The media would NOT like to look at things from a rational standpoint, and only be able to place their 'devastating' spin on it. But I must digress, it is the viewers who continue to watch the smut, drive up the ratings, and demand trash be absorbed into their minds.

@armendni: two of the deaths happened here in palm desert (by palm springs) over a long standing family feud. the two guys brought guns with them just in case they ran into each other and that's exactly what happened. though when one shot the other (with both their kids around) the teenage daughter of the one who was shot started shaking her dad screaming "wake up, wake up" and when she realized he was dead, she turned and looked at the other guy and said "you killed my daddy", then he shot himself.
sad story. nothing to do with black friday. sorry for the sadness of post.
