Fujitsu Amilo GraphicBooster External GPU Actually Looks Like a Great Idea
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:00 PM on December 4, 2008
Fujistu-Siemens has released their Amilo GraphicBooster. It seems like a rather good idea. A powerful graphics card and two-USB port that you can have permanently attached to three displays. It look amazing in action.
The Amilo GraphicBooster connects to the laptop using PCI-E, and has its own power supply. It houses a 512MB ATI Radeon HD3870 capable of driving three displays simultaneously, with two USB ports added so you can have a mouse and a keyboard always connected for minimun fuss.
And on top of that, it looks nice.
We will have to wait and see if we can say the same about its price. [Ubergizmo]

This is awesome. If it catches on, it could help the PC gaming industry a lot by reducing the hassle 'ordinary' people have to go through to be able to run the latest games. If it's reasonably priced it would make a nice alternative to consoles. Though I'm biased, being a PC gamer.

@JEmlay: It does seem kinda impractical, unless you have a laptop with really shitty integrated graphics and don't wanna buy a whole new one.

I've always wanted to ask:
Do you guys actually proof-read your articles before clicking "post"? I don't keep a written score or anything, but I can usually count 1, sometimes 2 spelling/english mistakes PER ARTICLE, and I'm no english major.
Who knows if that's even bad. Maybe other sites have 20 or 30 per article and you're doing good by comparison.

I wonder if you could run this with the fancy new USB 3.0?

These external solutions always fail. They are such a pain.

@Nintenboy01:
I am sure it wouldn't be too hard to modify it.
Or better yet, have them release one where you can put any graphics card you purchase separately in.

They should have played Half-Life 2 on the Demo, just to give an idea of games it truly could play.

Magma makes a similar solution for Mac... it's a failed effort though, as it only supplies enough juice for the OLD ATI cards.

But yes, I want to see more products like this. When I'm on the road, I want slim and sleek, and when I'm at home, I want to dock to a beast from hell, but I don't want two damn computers.

@admoseremic: I think it matters. Proper grammar and spelling shows the readers that their editors are competent at writing, which is part of their trade.
And yes, at one point it was 'made up,' but so are all the laws that we use in society (not to say that laws are arbitrary, but someone had to first 'enact' the laws.) You really think that we shouldn't have rules for writing? That's how pidgin languages are formed.

@eriegz: Who cares? I've never been a big fan of all the made up grammar rules anyways. Why is someone else's opinion of how to write better than anyone else's? Anyways, what does this have to do with an external GPU?

I won't buy it though, I have my desktop with a 4870 for that!

It would be nice if something like this existed already, as my laptop's GPU is teh suck. Everything else is great, fast processor, 2Gb ram....128mb GPU. But this comp is already 2 years old, and it is about time for me to get a new comp...hopefully I'll just build.

@eriegz: I was thinking the same, somewhat. But yeah, even with proofreading, sometimes people can still miss errors. Especially these guys! The editors at Giz do all of this so often and so well, too! Amd just so we all get our fix and don't go into tech-withdrawal, haha.
S'all good. I'm sure they pick up on their little mistakes and improve continuously, like the rest of us [if not more].

I was just researching this technology last week. In case anyone missed the details, this only drives external displays, only works with one fujitsu laptop, operates at sub-ATX-1 speed, and will likely be in the $350 range. Asus was planning to release a product for any laptop (or at least any with INTEL 965 integrated graphics), but it has entered firmly into the vaporware category.
Future laptops are going to implement a faster PCI-E port that will support this kind of thing more effectively. For now, you could probably buy a discount desktop with that 350 with an upgradable graphic card and be better off.
Still, neat idea.

Almost, but still a fail. When this works with any laptop, and has an upgradeable GPU, it could be a winner, as some kind of graphics-enhancing port replicator.

@DannyTMurphy: Half life 2 came out in 2004. Crysis was released a year ago. Half life 2 has been played by everybody I suppose, but the fact that Crysis is even running on that laptop is a much bigger deal than running Half Life 2 even with everything maxed out. You may have noticed every post about a supercomputer has the comment "But does it run Crysis".

@eriegz: If you want to read good English, avoid Jesus' posts - he cannot write standard English and refuses to use spell check software or hire a proofreader or spend time at an ESL class.
It does matter, to those of us who know English, and it is troubling to see someone post such rotten articles. But if you read most comments, sprinkled with "alot" and "noone" and all the homonym confusion, you will see that ol' Jeez has targeted his demographic well - none of them can read or write and moreover, don't care.
Just don't expect Jesus to write well and you won't be disappointed.

Its kinda nice, but its connecting over a xpresscard port, which is only 1x pci-e (plus a usb port). So it really wouldn't have the bandwidth to drive a card much larger than the one already in it.
