Zune Pass Subscription Service Adds Ten Free Keeper Tracks a Month
Posted by Jason Chen at 4:00 PM on November 20, 2008
Microsoft's $US15 Zune Pass subscription service—a pretty sweet deal already—has just porked up their offer by giving you 10 free songs that you can keep every month. We've talked about Zune Pass in our Zune reviews before, but it's basically access to all of the Zune Marketplace for only the price of a CD a month. Since most of their catalog (90% or so, including all the majors and a few indie labels) is already in MP3 format, you can load these free songs on any kind of device you want, like your iPhone or Android phone or PS3 or Wii.
They're also announcing the addition of Universal Music Group and Sony BMG to the MP3 DRM-less format (DRM-less as long as you buy the music), the last bits to complete their "majors" MP3 collection. We think the deal is hotness as long as you're OK with the fact that you're renting, not buying; well, you're now "buying" those ten tracks a month, in essence. [Zune]

Bought 2 Zunes on Woot, sold one on E-Bay for the cost of both, my Zune=Free. Add in unlimited music and the fact I really like the marketplace, sounds like a winner to me.

are these 10 songs mine forever to do with as i please...meaning i can burn them to disc, put them on an iPod, or whatever i want to do...or are they perma-locked to the Zune exclusively?

Sweeeett !!!! Too bad any of the zune`s attract me. 10 songs + all you can eat for 15 bucks its really nice. So the 10 songs I keep are mp3DRM-less ? Amazon and Walmart, you must do something now or I'm gone.

I'm sure the iSheep will be along shortly with the usual selection of comments.
I think it's important to mention that you don't need a Zune to take advantage of Zune Pass. Zune Pass works with any PlaysForSure Subscription-capable player, you just use the Zune software to download the songs, and Windows Media Player to sync them.

Really, M$oft has make great strides with the Zune since its inception. I really think they have a very real iPod equivalant on their hands, with the recent 3.1 update and this new ZunePass bonus. All they need now is a stronger bond with the 360 and a touchscreen model/Zune-phone and Apple will need to play catch-up.

LOL, so let me guess, they give you 10 tracks of their choice every month while you pay $14.99 a month for listening just to music, have ya heard of Pandora? is free you know, Limewire is also free. boy i have to tell you microsoft sure has some loyal Sheep s willing to flush $14.99 a month down the toilet

It's a decent deal man. If it's not for you, that's fine but at least read what they are offering. BTW, the Zune market place already offers a song for free every week. Usually some indie band or recently signed talent.
oh that's great, you called me a sheep......I really love you man!

@Sid1: What if everyone was singing the praises of the iPod? Would you cry bribery then?
Sorry but the ZunePass is awesome. $15 a month (the rough equivalent of a premium album on iTunes) and I download all the music I want coupled with software that encourages finding new music. I can understand you being upset that Apple doesn't have a subscription plan but that's your sour grapes.

The only real big problem with ZunePass is that it is possible to get too much music. I went on an "angry old man" music binge and have a whole helluva lot of Tom Waits and Neil Young to catch up on.

@bmbnbs: The difference between Apple and MS is that when the iPod was Apple-only, it stifled the iPod's growth.
Microsoft is nowhere near the point where it needs that last 10% of the computer market for market saturation.

@x23: The major label aspect is no small thing by itself, but the Zune Pass also lets you carry all of your "sample" songs with you as long as you have the subscription.
You're still basically buying 10 mp3's a month (at a standard price), but you're also getting a portable "celestial jukebox" for $5 a month.

@justinpe: Really? That's the best fanboy comeback you got for this great service? Making fun of the things you get for free? You can argue that those games are crap all you want but I don't think anyone would argue that not having the games is better than having them. You can say all you want about how the ipod is better or whatever, but you have to admit this is great. I'd you to go on record, right now, and say yes or no that is a great move, so I can hold you to it when Apple offers the same in less than a year.

@mrweatherbee: The Zune is the only one that's officially supported, but other PFS devices work. This is especially nice if you have Windows Mobile phone.
The DRM is locked in the other direction, though. The Zune device will only take DRM content from MS's Zune store.

I've been using the ZunePass since its inception, and I've always loved it. The only thing that drove me crazy was that there would be the odd song on an album (usually a popular single) that I was forced to buy because it wasn't available via subscription. Looks like those days are gone now. For $15 a month - about the price of a CD - you get all the music you can listen to, plus you can now keep ten tracks. Which is about one CD's worth. Plus Mixview, which is ridiculously good. Plus free games. And I can put any ZunePass music on my WinMo phone and it plays just fine. Seriously, if you can get over the fact that you're using 'evil' MS products, this is a great deal.

I bought two zunes from woot.com last year, one for myself, and one for my fiancee. I use linux as my primary operating system, no dual-boot. I setup Windows XP as a guest OS in VMWare with the zune software, and it works just great.
Oh and the zune pass works for up to 3 computers, so we both use the single zune pass :)

So clarify for me.
I can keep 10 songs a month. These are songs I CHOOSE to keep, not some list of freebies that I can choose from right? AND they are DRM free when I purchase them?
I might dig out my Zune and resub for a bit to take advantage of the keepable songs if I can choose the songs I want to keep.

Im still rocking my first gen zune, got for christmas from the GF. love this thing, use it everyday and I love the fact that I get firmware free. This new addition to the zune pass is a great idea, I really hope it gets more people to hop on the zune train. I want the new zune but I hope they go back to the matte faceplate, so much better looking imo.
Try a zune out and you will know why its better than IPOD. Well at least the classic.

I'm no MS fanboy by any means but it's not too often that you get a device that just keeps getting better and better the longer you have it like the Zune has been. I have a Zune 30 and I kind of lust after the newer ones but I really can't bring myself to replace it when there's nothing wrong with it and they keep basically upgrading it every few months.

@MajellaCabatan:
I wasn't making fun of things you get for free. I was simply trying to point out that free shit is still shit. Nobody runs around talking about how they got a free kick in the balls and how awesome it was.
I will admit that the Zune is a solid product, but it doesn't even come close to the iPod. Microsoft has definitely made some improvements, and I expect them to get more competitive. In order to do that, though, they will have to diversify their lineup a bit. You don't have very many choices when it comes to the Zune. You can get the big one or the little one. If you are shopping for an MP3 player at an Apple store, you have the choice between the big one, the little one, the really little one, the one with the big screen and the one with a phone. If I were going to invest in a device for listening to all of my music, I would want to have a lot of choices so I can find a product that best fits my needs. If I happened to workout a lot, I might choose the shuffle. If I want to watch a lot of movies on the go, I might choose the touch for its larger screen. If I want something that I can fit a lot of files onto, and use it as an external HD, I might choose the iPod classic.

@snitch29: yeah I think you aren't quite grasping this concept. you get to KEEP these songs forever and play them anytime you like legitimately. Pandora is a fantastic tool, but often times its littered with repeats and you cant exactly listen to a certain song you like whenever. Zune Marketplace and Zune Pass are iTunes killers. if only the Zune itself was more refined... mine died of software/hardware failure last week =(
