Zune 120 Coming in Blue, Along with New Zune Originals Designs
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:00 AM on November 9, 2008
Microsoft's arty Zune Originals designs are a great selling point for the device, but if you weren't satisfied with the selection so far, they're adding a whopping 46 new sketches to the collection. Some of the new designs are awfully snazzy, and they're all available on the Zune Originals site. While perusing the press release, a reader over at Zunerama found a shot of what seems to be the Zune 120 in the same shade of blue as the flash-based blue Zunes. It'd make sense for Microsoft to add a little colour to the big brother of the family, so it's probably safe to expect a more official announcement soon. [Zunerama]

If you're going to buy a Zune 120, you might as well get a Zune Originals. For $40 more, you get engraving and it comes with the premium headphones for free (reg. $39). The regular Zune 120 does not come with the premium headphones.

Why do I want a Zune with a drawing of a Zune owner who hung himself on the back?

@ViperBorg: i agree, but just because I love my Zune doesn't mean I've forgotten that I had to send it in twice.
I love Zune 3.0 btw

I love my Zune. Way better than my old iPod.

Personally I wonder what happens to the engraving if you have to send it in for repairs and they don't guarantee you'll get the same device back. Or do the engraved one's get a special guarantee? Just wondering?

@bana: For the time being, I would. For one reason: radio
I ended up purchasing an iPod Touch but let me tell you, it wasn't the touch screen that won me over, it was pure and simple economics. I needed a PDA-like device for my school so I can look up information, and the iPod Touch gives me that (open, free Wifi at our school lets me download the info) as well as a music player.

Honestly, I haven't bought an mp3 player since phones first started playing mp3's.
That being said, I've had 3 co-workers either buy them or have their kids ask for them in the past 2 months. I have to hand it to MS- they're doing the same thing they did with the Xbox. Fund the early generations through heavy losses, improve the featureset and cosmetics, and eventually the adoption rate rises.

Here's where I stand on Zunes.
The 30gb was HORRIBLE. I had one. Trust me. It was pretty cool for the first four months, but eventually, since the screen was made of plastic, it gets scratched up and murky. Like you're looking at the screen through tupperware.
Second, it was HUGE.
Well, enough of the old Zune.
The new one is really good. The software is excellent, and I like it better than iTunes. If you were comparing the Zune 120 to the iPod Classic, Zune is the easy winner.
However, the iPhone and iPod Touch come into the equation, and spank the Zune's butt. I mean, really, who would rather have a Zune than the iPod Classic?

Ironically enough, the Zune site is down.
I would have liked to see if they have designs hinting other classic methods of self harm. A bloody razor blade, an empty pill bottle etc. They should do a whole series for the gloomy youth market segment.

@OMG! Ponies!: I have the "Premium" Zune headphones (I bought them in a pack with a remote, carrying case, headphones, cable, and charger for $20 on Black Friday). They are not worth those $20 that I spent. They are like the $8 marshmallow headphones everybody has. They don't stay in my ears properly and get ear wax in them if I don't sanitize my ears prior to using them. I'm sticking with my Sennheiser MX90's. Don't get my wrong, the audio quality is fair, but my Senn's are far superior. Plus, my iPod got FREE engraving (own both iPod 80gb and Zune 30).

@quikboy:
I don't care if it's a dollar or if it's a penny. It's the principle of the matter. Not one file on my MP3 player is pirated. It's all either podcasts or music that that I bought. F*ck Microsoft for even thinking that it was a great idea to hand over money to Universal Music on my behalf on the arrogant assumption that I had full intention of pirating music from any of Universal's label.
That "just a dollar" attitude of yours is exactly why we are rapidly losing our rights as consumers and citizens one by one.

@WidescreenJohn: We here in canada have to pay a small portion of money of the sale of blank CD's to the record industry. It actually helped raise the price of CD's because of the stupid tax.
As long as i pay the traditional price for the device, and dont see it directly in my payment of it, i dont care, and neither should you.
You would be suprised the amount of crap you buy that goes to record companies.
I assume you dont buy CD's or MP3's, since you have this great refusal to give money to record companies. Oh wait. You do. In fact, you have probably paid more money to Universal than many out there (pirates), so i would just relax.

Don't worry I will not say it. The Zune is not copying the iPod. Their owners only wish they were. iPod touch with 3D games and 7,500 apps, email, REAL WiFi, great browser, etc. I do not think MS could copy that!

the blue color looks nice, though it was better to compete with small iPods, but with all this ads and new colors, i think MS is trying to compete with the iPod Touch. but with a touch screen, tons of games, wi-fi it just beats anything out there.
no really why would someone get a Zune (no offense) if he has an option to buy an "internet tablet", music player, games platform, all in one!!
i totally believe iPod touch will change the music and internet tablets industry just like how iPod changed it before 7 years.

@ajr: I got the zune80 with the originals engraving back when it was all free. The HDD died on me a few months ago and Microsoft had me send it in for repair. About two weeks later, they then sent me a brand new Zune Original with the same engraving after confirming the HDD was indeed dead. So now I have the Zune80 plus two link cables, two premium headphones, two art scrolls, etc.
Very pleased with their customer service
