You Aren't the Only One Who Never Watches the Serious Movies On Netflix
Posted by Adam Frucci at 4:00 AM on November 12, 2008
It's a common practice: you put a bunch of movies in your Netflix queue that are classics. You know, long, serious, depressing movies that you feel like you should have seen by now but haven't. Then they arrive and sit untouched for weeks while you watch Wayne's World 2 for the fifth time. Now, those epic movies are fighting back. [CollegeHumor]

My own personal rule is that everything must be watched and returned within one week. But I play fast and loose with the speed at which the movie is watched. If it's boring, it's getting the fast forward treatment. I watched Paranoid Park in fifteen minutes and felt my life was the richer for it.

LOL! I figured this out a while ago. At first when I started buying DVDs it was all "The Passion of Jean D'Arc" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." But I soon realized that I have to force myself to watch those... maybe... once, and in the meantime I've watched "The Battle of Britain" like 16 times. So now I mostly buy zombie flicks. I guess when I was in college and had a bunch of time to burn maybe it was easier to find time for a "serious" movie. Now when I have a moment to myself I just want to escape to some place where attractive young people are fleeing the living dead.

We actually have a rule about this in our house. 14 days. If we have anything for 14 days or longer, it goes back. We had a disc of Weeds: Season 1 for 8 months.

I've got a load of "must-see" movies sitting around to be watched.
They do get watched one by one, usually when I'm off work and can't find anything better to do.
"There will be blood" has been on the list ever since it got released, but one day, one day I'll get round to watching it, I know it. (having said that, I watched Saw V at the cinema instead last week...)

Not a classic, but me and my ex held on to "A Beautiful Mind" for 10 months before we finally watched it. Damn thing was just so long that whenever we decided we would try to watch, we realized we didn't have the time to or we weren't in the mood for such a "serious" flick.
I'm still shocked we ever got around to it.

Maybe not the best/most epic move- but Capote has now been sitting unwatched at home since... September 9. being on the 1-at-a-time plan- that is an expensive rental!

Too funny. I thought I was unique in that I have my 300+ queue litered with classics and documentaries, and yet always move my favorite action or comedy movies to the top of the heap. We've had "Atonement" on the pile, unwatched, for months!

This is why I haven't brought myself to sign up for Netflix or Blockbuster. I know there are movies I think I'd watch but I don't know if I will get around to them. My friend rents movies from Blockbuster and I'll watch them with him. I think it's easier to watch them when I have no idea what they're about. That way I don't have to worry about whether or not I'm in the mood to watch something.

At my house we call this "losing the netflix challenge". That's when we decide that it would be better to just send something back then to let it sit there unwatched stopping better movies from being sent.

I have had lapses in my Netflix viewing, going 6-8 months without watching anything, with the discs sitting on the shelf gathering dust, but it's only happened a few times over the past 7 years I've been a member. I'm usually very good about watching any disc within a week, and I often churn through them much faster. Of course, my queue is a different story. There are a good 300 or so that have been on my queue since the first few months after I joined, and I keep elevating other movies to the top. I'm constantly at 500 movies, and having to wait until I watch a few before I can add more. Damn, I love Netflix.

Now that Netflix has instant viewing for mac I may sign up again... its true though... things get busy... the video ends up gathering dust before getting watched.

Geez, if it's going to be a while before you watch it, rip-and-return and get round to it in your own time, instead of wasting money.
By keeping that one movie sitting there for months, you're paying, for example, for a 3disc service, but only getting a 2disc service.
Then the economy tanked and you give up on the service alltogether...
