Xbox 360 Netflix Streaming Drops Sony's Columbia Pictures
Posted by Elaine Chow at 2:39 PM on November 19, 2008
In what's a slightly suspicious coincidence, but Sony's suddenly pulled a bunch of its movies from the Xbox's Netflix Watch Instantly streaming service just a few hours before Microsoft's New Xbox Experience goes live. Previously available titles like Superbad and Bad Boys, which are owned by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment subsidiary Columbia Pictures, have been made unavailable for Xbox users. Netflix VP Steve Swasey says there's no foul play involved, and that the NXE Instant Queue had just run into a licensing issue with Columbia Pictures. [Joystiq via Engadget]

This sucks. I have a bunch of movies in my instant queue that were available to watch on my Xbox last night, now they're gone. Hopefully this'll get resolved soon.

Yes, but consider that Microsoft's online service has zero death crystals, that'll be the service to have.

@ShironR: I have it on my Xbox right now... idk, tho, I signed up to be one of those final beta testers and I think they released it to them earlier. It's pretty sweet, but not that much of a game changer. The most noticeable feature is that the in-game menu comes up more quickly. It's nice.

Actually...all of the companies owned by Sony Pictures are no longer available for streaming on the Xbox. That includes Columbia Pictures, Tristar Pictures, and Screen Gems among others.
Of my 58 movies on my Instant Queue, 16 of them are no longer available.

As if Sony's PS3 adventures couldn't get any more suicidal, now they want to expand the console war to other forms of media... when they're already losing!
This is as if Churchill had declared war on Russia before the US got involved in WW2. (Dodges Goodwin by a hairs-breadth.)

@internetzlol: it's technology news. And considering the service is going live very soon and the parties involved are competitors dealing with a third party service.
It's like if Coca Cola stop giving Burger King sodas because Burger King is offering meals for a Pepsi party.

Also, it is suspicious that only Sony movies would be pulled, and especially conspicuous between rivals.

Im pretty much done with Sony. This is one reason i Will not buy a BlueRay Player. Media rights should not be dealt with like this. At least you could still listen to the Beatles on a MAC even when they were in a lawsuit. I will be contacting Netflix this afternoon to either get a cheaper subscription or get all of my money back for false advertising.
At what point will the Xbox not play DVD's that are produced or connected with Sony? Wait, that is a standard media format that they cannot control. Maybe M$ should make all Windows operating systems fail on Sony Viao CPUs. That would seem to be the same situation. Screw Sony and the piddly crap.

makes sense to me for sony to do this. its a console war and they own studios; sony really doesn't use any ms products or servies on the ps3.
sucks though for the x360 owners, here's to hoping sony and netflix get us PS3 owners this same thing going on. :)

@seamonkey420: "makes sense to me for sony to do this."
From a business perspective, yes. From a consumer perspective, no - as a consumer, I will be more loyal to the company that restricts me less.
What makes sense to me is not buying XBox or PS3 as long as my Netflix account continues to be a higher priority.

Sony is gonna pull the exclusive rights BS and launch Netflix on the PS3 and then claim exclusivity on Sony Studio titles. Now you have to buy there PS3 just so you can stream Superbad. Whoopty-Freakin-doo Atleast Microsoft and Netflix tried to bring something good to the 360.

Sony is just hilarious to me. It's not that what they are doing doesn't make good business sense. It's that they seem to hang themselves with the "court of public opinion" rope with everything they do.
Too funny.

@grubish1: Laff.. Good luck with the no Blu-ray endeavor.. Also, Sony doesn't make CPUs, therefore your logic about Windows failing on Sony Vaios is flawed. You really think MS will oust Sony Vaios of its OS because of pulled movies on Netflix? Doubt it.

When will the content providers EVER learn?
Let me get your stuff legally, for a fair price, in a convenient to me manner, and you'll get my money. Netflix Watch Instantly met that need.
Make it inconvenient, expensive, or impossible to get your stuff legally, and guess what, I'll get it off the torrents. YOU LOSE, not me.
Idiots.

All this does is prevent me from watching Sony pictures via Netflix/Xbox. It's not like I'm going to react to this by going out and buying a Sony BlueRay player or PS3. Heck, I won't even go out and get a Sony DVD. And it's not that I'm trying to stick-it to Sony. But people just don't react that way. If Toyota stops selling Camerys right before I'm ready to buy, It's not like I'm going to decide on-the-spot to upgrade to a Lexus.
Same thing with this xbox/netflix thing. If I find myself suddenly unable to get a Sony movie from Netflix streaming, it's not like my next reaction is going to be "well, I better go out and buy it on DVD/BD."
What a petty move. Desperation is so obvious.

MS makes a lot of money based on their online video marketplace. Since they have an established business they stand to be more hurt than Sony by Netflix.

I wonder if this isn't actually specifically a XBL issue as much a license issue with netflix.
Did all of the Sony movies also get pulled from the marketplace?

@newgalactic: Exactly, it's not like I'm going to cancel XBL & my Netflix account over this. I can still watch The Office right? ;-)
I'm assuming that Netflix has some kind of licensing deal w/ the studios to stream the content so I highly doubt that this stuff will be gone forever (why would Sony remove a revenue stream over something likely wouldn't get a single person to purchase their console?) My guess is Sony wants to get increased royalties since their content "could be" streaming through a "competitor's" interface and this is their way of leveraging Netflix to increase their slice of the pie...
I feel bad for all the Netflix users who are paying the price regardless if they have a 360 or not.

I think it's time MS stops licensing Windows for use on Sony PC's... And rewrites their licensing agreements to specifically prohibit the use of their software and technologies across all Sony products, regardless of their complete lack of relevance to console gaming.
I mean... Seriously... This can do nothing but hurt Sony's image as far as I'm concerned. Why shouldn't you be able to stream Sony movies via Netflix to an Xbox? If MS competitively blocked out Sony from every industry that's not directly related to console gaming, their goes their entire PC lineup at the very least.

Uh, Apple won't license their OS to run on PC's they don't build...
Why can't Sony restrict their movies?
It is simple business practices - it is not smart to help a competitor. Sony is branching into using their own PS3 to show movies, so it makes sense to try to have exclusive content.
How come you don't blame Nintendo for not licensing Mario for the XBOX or PS3? What about Halo?
Microsoft won't license their applications to all run on Linux. Bast*rds! Boycott them! Sell your XBOX because MS doesn't support Linux!!!!

Wow...Sony...As Red Foreman would say "Dumbass!" No worries on my part, I will just have my usual Netflix send me the Sony DVDs and I will just rip them and still play them thru the XBox via my PC.
This is just Sony's last ditch effort to suppress Xbox success and try to increase on Blu-Ray sales.
