Windows 7 Will Only Have One 'Ready' Sticker, Down From Vista's Four
Posted by John Herrman at 7:30 PM on November 6, 2008
After receiving endless flak for their silly tiered Vista Compatibility scheme, Microsoft has decided to issue a single "Windows 7 Capable" sticker for hardware that works with the new OS. That means no more "Windows Home Basic", "Windows Ready", "Certified for Windows" and "Windows Ready When You Are, Asshole" labels slapped on every piece of hardware in the computer aisle at Best Buy.
During the same conference in which this was announced, Microsoft demonstrated Windows 7 on a modestly spec'd Eee netbook, so it looks like Windows 7 compatibility might be taken for granted with most new PCs. Microsoft did tell the Register that there would be different stickers for touchscreen and media centre devices. While the touchscreen sticker will be a convenient indicator that a device is touch-capable, what will media centre sticker mean? That a computer has an HDMI output? That marketing asked for it? Also, one=three, apparently. [The Register]

As long as "Windows 7 Capable" doesn't mean "your computer will run like crap if you use Windows 7", then I'm down for it! Seeing that they can run it on an Eee PC does sound promising...but I'm not gonna have my hopes up.

Maybe they could make them honest too...
"Barely Windows Capable" and "Hardly Windows Capable" or "Runs Windows 7 slower than a dead hampster runs in a wheel." ....For the PC makers that try to push outdated hardware.

@OpenPotion: They could also make stickers like these for high end machines. "Runs windows 7 like Chuck norris on crack" or "BOOM!" or "IT PLAYS CRYSIS" or "Runs windows 7 soooooo fast that it deserves a sticker that says its soooooo fast in running windows 7."

Windows 7 actually runs quite well on low speced machines. I'm using windows 7 now on a msi wind. Apart from aero related slowdowns it runs at almost the same speed as windows xp does. I imagine it would run like a charm if it isnt for the intel integrated graphics.

Those case stickers stopped being cool with that Vista stuff.
Now they have a sticker coolness deficit to overcome.

All they need his home and business, and MAYBE Ultimate. Then you need 32-bit and 64-bit versions of each of those. So that's six right there. Vista Starter was aimed at low-end PCs but it sounds like 7 won't need one of those because in a couple more years more people will have upgraded combined w/ the fact 7 seems to run on leaner hardware. I don't like the idea of "Ultimate," but I have a feeling they're going to keep that.
My guess is the Media Center sticker is meant for those computers that have hardware accelerated Bluray decoding, Bluray recording and HDMI out.
The touchscreen sticker is a great idea. But couldn't I also get a special monitor and hook it up to any Winodws 7 machine and get touch screen? I'm not sure how touch tech works so maybe someone can help me with that. So far I've only seen it work with all-in-one machines (iPhone, kiosks, etc.)

@Usama: I love my Ultimate. The idea of home and business is that those customers need a different set of options in the OS. Ultimate has it all. And I'd rather have it that way. I like to be able to remote to my desktop without having to use stupid 3rd party software, and be able to record my TV shows.
And before anyone gets on me about 3rd party remote apps, those of you with VNC and GOTOMYPC and LogMeIn and hush up right now. In windows, the person sitting next to my computer DOES NOT SEE what the hell I'm doing. Nor do they need to. I like my security, thank you. I'd rather not use any of those 3rd party apps that show on the host screen what the hell I'm doing on my own computer. It's none of anyone else's business. Thank you.
Sorry, mate, but Ultimate FTW.

@Monty: Microsoft pays to put the sticker on your laptop, just like Intel does. This helps offset the cost and, unlike with fruit-based electronics, PC laptop manufacturers pass the savings on to you.
I'll accept a Microsoft sticker if it means paying less for a laptop. I have Goo-Gone in my house to remove any sticker residue.

@OMG! Ponies!: Correction -
On further reflection, I will also permit puffy stickers, official Mr. Yuk stickers, stickers of Formula 1 race cars, tyrannosaurus rex stickers, and peanut-butter scratch n' sniff stickers.
I will not permit bubblegum scratch n' sniff stickers because the smell makes me nauseous.

Did it ever occur to Microsoft that one sticker might be one too many? They need to focus their energy on making a product that people want to use and stop treating computers like a skateboard.

@Usama: I don't think they genuinely need "home" vs "business". Even though the needs of the two groups are different, the only reason they don't just load it all on one machine is so that they can differ in pricing. And Ultimate should just be something you unlock with a purchase code.

@winmac: my personal favourite version is the Basic Ultimate...mainly because i find that the Ultimate-Ultimate version has a little too much Ultimacy and it ruins the Basicy-ness of the Regularity.

@ViperBorg: Oh I guess I should have been clearer. I think Ultimate should be the Home version (so Home has everything) and the Business should be a stripped down version (like no Media Center). I definitely enjoy Remote Desktop and I would hate 3rd party solutions too, so I'm in full agreement.
That's why I use the "crack" that enables Remote Desktop in Vista Home Premium! :-)
and @taking_this_easy: good looking out, thanks.

Knowing windows history there will be about 10 version of windows 7. Even if they don't publicly advertise it.
There will be the enterprise version, the server version, the Media version, the table version, the light version, etc, etc...
If this does not happen I'll be surprised.
But this is the way Microsoft's sales channel is setup.

What about a numbering system from 1-10 or something to show how well it will run Windows 7?
I think they already have some software tool that does this for Vista, why don't they just show that number on the laptop/desktop?
