Wii Classic Controller Gets a GameCube Makeover
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:30 AM on November 19, 2008
The Hori Classic Controller isn't just a Wavebird knockoff for the Wii. It's a strange amalgamation between the old and new, borrowing the iconic Wavebird formfactor while simultaneously swapping those ridiculous Wavebird controls for the more practical 4-button setup from the SNES/Classic Controller and a pair of dual analogue sticks reminiscent of the Xbox 360. In other words, it looks chunky and fantastic. The $US30 Hori Classic Controller will be available for import soon...but the baby blue finish is killing us. [Play-Asia via OhGizmo]

@berbar:
It will very likely hook up to a Wiimote just like an official classic controller. At first I was really excited that this would have a dongle like a wavebird and work with Gamecube games as well but the limited information doesn't make this look it that's the case.

@MURPHtheSURF: Actually I would really love a Wii classic controller with turbo buttons... however this is not what I had in mind.

in the last 10 years? nobody. But they are still mighty handy for all those oldschool 8 and 16bit games that were easy to tap away on when you were a 10-year-old jagged on fun-dip (and now can't quite seem to for some reason).
I remember when we had one turbo controller for the SNES, and used to have man vs. controller competitions in street fighter II with chun li / e-honda on the stack of bricks and car. OH, MY CAR!

Hell yeah, turbo buttons! Haven't you ever played Contra? It's all about the turbo!

Not only did they paint it a hideous shade of blue, but they also used lower case letters on the buttons, which looks kind of dumb. I DO like the normalized button layout, but color coding the "green" and "red" buttons for Gamecube use could have come in handy. I noticed the Wiimote buttons; does this thing have motion sensors, too?

@LordGriffin: I think they were trying to imitate Nintendo's classic controller with the lower-case button labels.
I do really hope this comes in other colors, because, other than the baby blues, it looks awesome.
Oh, and do not diss Turbo Fire. Turbo Fire is awesome.

Ahhh. The LameCube. Nintendo's little failure.

@OMG! Ponies!: At least they used the snes-esque buttons, not that stupid Gamecube setup, and the lame C button.
Still, the shoulder buttons on GC sucks, and they are back.

@OMG! Ponies!: I only have one thing to say in rebuttal; Wind Waker.

@OMG! Ponies!: And baseball is a very boring game, so that's a fitting analogy.
I <3 Super Monkey Ball though... except for the cut scenes. When I first saw the monkeys talking gibberish and flying around in a washing machine I almost killed myself... maybe I should have.
But the N64 wasn't much better (or worse) than the GameCube. It too had it's share of great games, but they were few and far between.

@MURPHtheSURF: Wind Waker was a great game. So were Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing, Eternal Darkness and Super Monkey Ball.
Unfortunately, the number of great games on that platform would be able to field a baseball team.

@OMG! Ponies!: the gamecubes controller was arguably the most comfortable controller for any console, regardless of the abysmal button arrangement; however, they did become second nature, and I prefer them over the Wii's controller any day.

That's badass. @Rabid Penguin: OOT, Banjo Kazooie, and... yeah, those are the only games from 64 that I have ever wanted to play since GC/ps2 came out. It's almost like Nintendo just releases the same games for every console.

@Rabid Penguin: I heartily disagree with your assessment of baseball. But as a NY'er, I'm biased. I have the Mets, who break my heart every year, and then there's the Yankees who deliver 18 great games against Boston every year without fail.

@Decaye: How could you have possibly forgotten one of the greatest Nintendo games of all time from the Nintendo 64, the incomparable 007: Goldeneye?!

@AmishPhysicist: hmm. now that I think about it, they probably don't allow third party wiimotes, so they've got to tag along. weak.

hmm. why can't they come out with one that basically integrates the wiimote functionality into the classic controller? the tethering of one conroller over to the wiimote seems like a waste of batteries.

@OMG! Ponies!: You think the Gamecube is Nintendo's "little failure"!? Perhaps you've never heard of a little gizmo called the VirtualBoy?

@LordGriffin: The VirtualBoy is Nintendo's "big failure." So OMG! Ponies! Is technically correct.
