Wall-E Three Disc Special Edition Blu-ray Lightning Review
Posted by Mark Wilson at 3:30 AM on November 19, 2008
The Product: Wall-E (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy and BD Live). It features the movie, obviously, along with enough extra content to keep Wall-E stacking little featurette cubes for years.
The Price: $US40 retail, though it's $US25 at places like Amazon
The Verdict: Our own Adam Frucci already reviewed Wall-E, calling it "one of the best sci-fi movies in years, disguised as a cartoon." And if that's true for the film (which I believe it is), then I'd have to call the Blu-ray version of the film "one of the best art classes in years, disguised as a movie."

I especially enjoyed the featurette on animation sound design. It's about 20 minutes long, and if you have no experience in sound design, then it's an absolute must watch. You get to not only watch famed sound designer Ben Burtt work his magic (Star Wars, Indiana Jones), but see the top secret Disney gadgets dating back to 1937 used to make specific sounds for the film.
My favourite moment was when Burtt say discovers a new way to produce the sound of a storm, and then it cuts to him dragging a punching bag down what's surely a random carpeted hallway of Pixar.
It's one of the few artsy-technical extras that's neither dumbed down nor too insider for the audience to understand. Quite simply, you'll appreciate Wall-E and all sound design more because of it.
But that's such a small part of the extras. Over the course of the 40 minutes or so of well edited technical featurettes alone:
You'll learn that the humans of the film were originally aliens...with a violent streak...who were studied in real world 3D gelatin mode to understand their movement.

You get a glimpse of the manpower that goes in to building a scene, from the guy who animated a D-cup bra sitting on Wall-E's eyes, to the gal who stuck a singular lamp post in the background.
You get to see how the robots were designed, modularly, just like LEGO to increase variety with minimal effort.
If you think I've spoiled it for you, realise that these featurettes have a backdrop of worthwhile interviews and a slew of original concept animation. They're truly an unexpected pleasure to watch and you can also find those above on the DVD version of Wall-E.

And once you're done with the technical stuff, you'll still have a variety of commentaries, annotated deleted scenes, amazing 3D set fly-throughs (one of the great BD-exclusive features pictured here), a clever interactive storybook, a digital copy, the BURN-E short, various other extras and, of course, the film Wall-E itself. I'll honestly say that I've probably seen only half of the set's content and it's still seemed like an excellent media value.

Sure, Wall-E was probably my favourite film of 2008, so it's little surprise that the Blu-ray would be my favourite disc of the year. But it's rare that the public gets such a well edited, worthwhile set of extras to look through. Because, I mean, let's face it. The movie would have been enough.

So now my 3 year old will be saying Eeeeva and Wall-eeee instead of "Smile and wave boys, smile and wave."
The DVD version is bought and in the car but not the 3 disc DVD with all the extras. It was twice the price of the single.

I was skeptical of Wall-e being another typical Disney/Pixar kids movie but I liked Toy Story so I figured I've give this a shot. I mean a child-like little worker-bot with big puppy-dog eyes and an even bigger sense of curiosity? If you don't watch this movie and feel sad for the little guy more than once, you probably don't have a heart or you may have misplaced it somewhere.
Now is it worth buying a BR player for? Probably not. ;)

@dustin91: I've decided to forgive so many things when it comes to bad movie physics. The very fact that there's sound in space makes everything else a rather moot point for me, but at least WALL-E does it with a great deal more panache, than say, Star Wars.

@Lite: Neither have I, Lite. Not because I don't want to, I do. I mean--holy crap!--I'm a frakkin' filmmaker, fergawdzsake, it's part of my career to watch films.
It's just that, over the last couple of years, I've found that I'm almost always going to buy the DVD anyway, with Blu-ray now as the preferred format (on a PS3). So why should I effectively "double-dip" by paying both a theater ticket price (with arm-and-a-leg concession prices) plus a BD/DVD purchase price? With few exceptions, such as an iMax and/or 3D release, nowadays I just skip theatrical releases and wait a few months for the BD release.
Yeah, it means I end up a little out of sync with the pop cultural curve. Big deal. I end up saving money and I get to watch movies in my own (pretty decent HD with 10' screen and 7.1 sound) home theater without the annoyance of crying babies or yakky teens.

@Kaiser-Machead's Cookie-Powered LEGO Machine: Nope, the dvd version do have some of the stuff but not as much as the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray has the virtual tour thing and a bit more.
If you have a Blu-ray player, you should really get the blu-ray, since the blu-ray 3 disc special edition is at most $5 more than the regular DVD wall-e and $2 more than the special edition DVD wall-e.

I loved this movie to no end, but wish they had not done only two things: 1) Use Fred Willard, or any "live" actors for that matter. 2) Let the plant get taken into space. Great moments in that segment, but that little stem would have been frozen solid in seconds.
I can suspend a ton of belief, but those just stood out too much. Still, I watched the movie two more times on an airplane last month and damn near broke down in tears. Truly an instant classic.

@dustin91: Agreed on using live actors. It ruined the immersion for me... Funny, isn't it usually inappropriate CGI moments in live-action movies that people have 'immersion' complaints about?
It just seemed like a very un-Pixar-like artistic decision to make. But the other 99.9% of the film holds up so well that it's just nitpicking. If I take the Blu-ray plunge this year, this title will be the reason.

@Mona: Agreed. Did anyone see that Blu-ray player on Woot yesterday? It was available all day, before eventually being retired for the next day's item. People are just not interested in Blu-ray. The future is convenience (see: Hulu, Netflix "Watch Now", Xbox 360, Vudu, iTunes, etc), not quality. The only way HD would have caught on is if HD-DVD won, and players were available for $99 and movies for $15. By "winning" the format war, Sony basically doomed HD physical media to an early death.

@fsusmithc2: I watched Toy Story on a new 46" 1080p Sony LCD, with a Sony $99 upscaling DVD player and the old TS 1&2 box set. It looked amazing. Maybe not the vibrant color of BR, which I don't have, but crystal clear besides. And maybe they'll color movies differently now in anticipation of BR and HD reproduction. But I do not regret not having BR for Pixar movies. I'd check Wall*E which I'll pry receive today, but it's for my son for the holidays...

kind of ironic, Sony finally gets a format that wins in a format war (unlike minidisk, betamax, etc.) and demand for the technology is negligible.
Blu-ray's are great, but for most people they aren't worth the price to upgrade, especially when there are many other (albeit lower quality) options.

@Mathray: Duly noted on the plant in space guys, though I was always under the belief that it was pretty damn cold, as in why spacewalking 'nauts need a suit. Nevertheless, it pales in comparison to using that unfunny hack Willard. I get the use of live action to show the progression of humans from what we know to the blobs on the screen, but still... the humans in The Incredibles and Ratatouille were fine. Fortunately, the rest of the movie friggin' rocks. And I love how so many characters are voiced by Pixar folk.

@pine1045: It's not cold. Remember energy can only go from areas of higer energy to lower energy (second law of thermodynamics). Since there is very little matter in space, it would take an incredibly long time for all of your body heat heat to transfer to that matter. People only think space is cold because they see things like ice in space. Ice is formed in space not because the water is cold, but because of the reduced pressure due to the vacuum. Here is a chart showing melting point versus pressure for water:

New BD movies aren't that expensive compare to DVD, just the players are expensive, and since now the economy is in the shitter, lots of people will be turned away from getting BD players this christmas.
