Vudu Claims Largest HD Movie Library in the World, Bigger Than Blu-ray

Posted by John Herrman at 7:00 PM on November 10, 2008

In a bid to set themselves apart from their increasingly inevitable competition, Vudu made a bold claim: , with 1100 HD movies, including about 150 in the fantastic HDX codec, they've got the largest HD movie library in the world, physical formats included. This sounds suspect until you consider that Netflix, Xbox Marketplace and Apple TV all offer under a thousand HD films, and that Blu-ray.com, which lists all available titles, only contains ~1030 discs, including some television shows.

These numbers, however, rely on some pretty shaky sources — Vudu's PR people and the clumsily organised online directory of BD titles — so don't be surprised if the Blu-ray Disc Association shoots back a hasty "yeah, no" in the next few days. No matter what, the encoding-happy company is bound to end up with a massive library, as Vudu encoding HD movie at a rate of about 150 a week. [Vudu via Crave]

Blu-ray.com IS NOT "Blu-ray's official site". You people need to correct that claim. That rubbish website is not affiliated with the BDA in anyway. The official BDA website in North America is http://Blu-raydsic.com. In Australia the official Blu-ray website is http://www.blurayaustralia.com.au. There are several other official sites across Europe and Asia -- Blu-ray.com is NOT one of them. Is it so hard to do some fact checking?

Considering that Hollywood has barely over 1000 Blu-ray HD titles, VUDU has very few customers, and most of their $40 Millions USD in funding is gone. Either VUDU is leading us down the garden path or the titles are CRAP!!! Also VUDU does not offer a true blu-ray HD experience in 1080p. Unlike this service that I found recently called MyTVPAL ( www.mytvpal.com ). They provide Thousands of movies and Hundreds of live tv channels from all over the world!!! Also how stable can day to day business be at VUDU if Mark Jung, the CEO just got the boot! Man the VC's will take over this company and then what will happen.....
