Never in your lifetime? I'm hoping that's hyperbole. And let's get one thing straight. We're talking about "Closeup dramatic performance of a normal human being". When you say that. Because I can guarantee that I could find a virtual human somewhere in the background of a movie that you would NEVER pick out as 'weird'. CG can deliver humans at 50 feet on a normal lens for all intents and purposes perfect.

10 years ago you wouldn't be able to use a digital extra 100 feet away on a normal lens.

Furthermore we need to be more specific when we say "digital performance in a closeup." Face replacements have been going on for years. Gladiator has one of the most seemless face replacements I've ever seen. XMen's digital makeup effects to rejuvinate Professor X and Magneto is effetively perfect.

The only thing holding us back from a perfect CG performance is time and money. Both of which become less and less of a problem every year.
