USB Microscope Digitally Magnifies at 200x, 1600x1200 Resolution
Posted by Adrian Covert at 5:15 AM on November 5, 2008
We've seen digital microscopes before, but few can claim that they have a 1600x1200 sensor, 200x magnification and 2 GB of free online storage. This £50 device works improves upon last year's 640x480 Microscope Pen from the same company, and lets you take stills or AVI movies.. And the test pics from the microscope don't look half bad (if they're actually real). The USB microscope can be found over at [IWOOT via Geek Alerts].

I'd love to grab one of these if it actually produced quality results, although the ability to record .avi could produce some interesting results.

wow this is awesome... it kind of takes away from the high school bio class microscope feeling... but this could make computers in the classroom that much more viable

@citizensmith: Yeah, the first thing I did was search for a US retailer. That's too damned high, but I want one of these.

I bought a cheap Creative web cam for may inlaws 2 years ago.
(This is the newer version [us.creative.com] still $29)
Since they upgraded the laptop which has a webcam I got the old one back to see if I could turn it into a microscope with some lenses...
GUESS What?
Don't need any lenses... the manual focus ring can be adjusted until it focuses in about 1" distance. That is some serious X factor at that distance.
In a PCB board with chips you can only see 3 ~ 4 legs of a chip at most...
If you need to go on the cheap... it sure works and at 1.3 Mpix the image is great.
Hope this helps someone!

@ravedown: If they need a microscope to look at it (whatever it is), then it probably isn't too bad.

@Hestika
I have had one of these for about a year. I got it on ebay for $79 + $18 shipping from china. I bought it to examine coins and it does a great job. Too bad you can't turn off the 4 LEDs.

I don't understand why a microscope wouldn't advertise mac support. Schools might be convinced to buy these things, and schools tend to use macs a great deal.
