Unconfirmed: Snow Leopard Release Set For Q1 2009
Posted by Elaine Chow at 5:32 PM on November 19, 2008
Snow Leopard, that eagerly awaited rebuild of the Mac OS X, could be coming in the first quarter of 2009, if you are to believe Apple engineering director Jordan Hubbard's "presentation slides" from the LISA '08 conference. The next version of OS X won't come with too many crazy new features, but it does offer dramatically smaller application files and a complete overhaul to deliver serious performance gains. A Q1 release would mean that 10.6 is arriving a lot sooner than most people had expected, and that a demo may possibly be shown off during Macworld San Francisco 2009. [Macrumors]

so...what kind of compatibility issues are you going to run into...app wise?
remember how Adobe CS2 ran faster on a G4/G5 imax than on one of the new Intel imaxs.
Adobe CS4 will run great on it but what about all of the other apps that you use?

i started with tiger, heard about leopard and was like whatever it can't be that great. friend gave me leopard and i was like holy shit what was i thinking. so i think buying snow leopard will be a top priority for me when it comes out -and i know it doesn't have all the cool new gadgets, but who can resist it working faster and being more secure, i can't.

What a waste of money. To create a new OS almost every year is stupid. They should make some new programs, like a porn-hiding program safe thing.

Let it take to June im happy with Leopard if they promise to make right tweaks in key applications.
- Improve the Finder plzzz.
- Give us more options in controlling the document vs application things.
- Fix the main applications, like Mail!!
Leopard is awesome and powerful, BUT, to make it ur own u will need many many small utilities.
I cant remember everything cuz im on the company PC. but will write a full "wish" list when im home.

Since Snow Leopard's job in life is to be stable and solid rather than add glitzy new features, does that mean the initial release shouldn't suffer from the usual iffiness of version 1.0's?

@winmac: CS2 was emulated on Intel Macs because it was coded and compiled for PPC, so yeah, sure it was slower, but that was because of architecture change, nothing to do with OSX update.

I for one love the idea behind Snow Leopard but am not sure if it deserves full OS pricing - maybe half-price?
I've always wondered what would happen if a software company stopped trying to beat the curve with new bloated features and instead decided to overhaul and perfect their current system. It seems to me like hardware has massive power these days, yet all it's done is allow OS and software developers to become lazy about their algorithms and systems architecture.
Here's to hoping that Snow Leopard results in some tangible performance gains.
