UMID's Mini Netbook Makes Eees Look Massive
Posted by Kit Eaton at 11:30 PM on November 12, 2008
Yes, the netbook market is tired and pretty jam-packed, but check out this shiny beast: it's a mini-netbook from Korean manufacturer UMID. And it's tiny. There's no official size info, but it looks smaller than a paperback book, and comparable to the old Psion PDAs, if you remember 'em, but far more capable.
It's Atom-powered, of course, with 1GB memory and up to 32GB of SSD storage, and crazily jams in Korean wireless broadband WiBro, digital TV receivers, HSDPA, WiMAX, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Its touchscreen is a respectable 1024x600 pixels, and while the keyboard may challenge the fat-fingered, the machine can run XP, Vista or Linux. Skinny-fingered netbook fans will have to hold their horses though as there's no info on price or whether it'll make it over the Pacific. [Aving]

@Nadnerb5: that's what i thought but there is a qwerty keyboard in the somewhere, hopefully when they release it to english speaking regions the keyboard will be cleaner, character wise.
looking forward to this being released as i'm looking for something along the lines of the nokia n810 internet tablet but with slightly more powerful specs.
i might actually bite the bullet and buy one. Sod all this waiting lark, portable instant messenger/irc/media player is becoming a must

Still uses a stylus? Pretty old school...

At some point the interface would have to be modded to suit something so small. The regular XP desktop just doesn't do it for me on that tiny a device. Little better than WinMo, but not that much.

How much?? If it's around 300 put me down for one, otherwise the sacrifice in screen size vs. a non-touch 8 or 9" is not worth it to me. This looks to be maybe a 5" screen?

@MissRabbit: I agree. I'm thinking this is actually to small. Engadget says it has a 4.9 inch screen; that's just a little bigger than the touchscreen smart phones. Maybe that's where all of this is headed; phones that aren't actually phones but tiny laptops that can also be used as a phone.

That is pretty wicked but I am confused by the keyboard layout... is that like a Korean keyboard? There doesn't seem to be enough keys.

as a dell mini owner, I can say that I think netbooks are at about the perfect size already, the only direction to go really is thinner. A smaller keyboard or screen would be useless imo.

That might be pushing it for me size-wise, but still pretty cool if it works well.
My Netbook hit the sweet spot for portability/usability for me.

Wow. Honestly, my Eee is about as small as my larger-than-an-eight-year-old's... fingers can reliably type on, but that really is awesome.

I cant see the Google site. Does anyone know, does this have a USB port? Even the micro?
If it did this would be really tempting because I want something to run Nikon Camera Control Pro for use as an intervalometer and timer.

@ezman: You dont HAVE to use a stylus but they include it because a lot of the stuff is just too small to use your finger with.
Just like how people were complaining about typing on the apple keyboard using the phone. Sometimes the fat fingered need some help.On my Touch I almost never used the stylus because I have scrawny ass fingers.

@Gibberish: I was surprised to see my roommate's HTC Touch Pro uses a stylus... I thought those days were over, what with the advent of the iPhone and it's capacitive screen. Apparently not. I like this article from Giz about touchscreens. Interesting stuff.

@archercc:
not to mention hand grease covered screens, and yes I know they have microfiber cloths to constantly wipe their screens with.

@ezman
some people prefer a stylus to using the very tip of their pinky.

1.3 GHz atom from what I've read, oh and look at that: "32GB of SSD storage" something that the iPhone doesn't have (but will shorty enough, iPod Touch does already)

After having an EEE PC and testing some other 7 to 11 inches netbooks and laptops, I decided that 13" is the minimum display size for a computer to me.
So, this is shiny and smexy, but I wouldn't buy it.
