Tuner Adds Fake 'Vrooom' and 'Pew Pew' Sounds to Tesla Roadsters
Posted by John Herrman at 7:32 PM on November 14, 2008
Popular Mercedes tuner Brabus has designed a Tesla modding package which adds — among other things — fake engine sounds to make up for the Roadster's silent electric motor. You can opt for a traditional v-8 engine sound, a race car sound or even two "futuristic landscape" settings that may or may not make your Tesla sound like George Jetson's spacewagon. You also get a few trim additions, some interior tweaks and, oh god, groundlighting. The whole package might be gaudy, but the fake engine sounds take the tacky cake. I'll say it: they're the electric supercar equivalent of spinner hubcaps. [NextAutos]

Sound has its place in keeping people from stepping in front of the car, I suppose. If I had an electric car, I think having the OPTION would be nice. If for no other reason, you never know when some backwards-ass state will want to outlaw quiet cars after the first kid gets flattened.

If they tack on the ability to generate real-life pollution, I'm sold.

Seeing as it's Brabus doing this, I doubt the sounds would be as cheesy as hubcaps.

How about a full audiovisual package that gives a HUD to make it look like I'm play F-Zero.
OMG! Ponies!

@SalilaAchilles: Yeah, and the light kit is for those old cobblestone roads that don't have undercarriage lighting, in case someone drops their keys or something. It's all very practical.

Actually, the sound emmissions are to help the blind recognize that it is not safe to step into a cross walk, not to mention people that just are not paying attention. This is especially important at Roundabout style intersections where cars are not always bunched in groups as they usually are at signalized intersections. This is actually a very good idea, so long as they do not make it obnoxious.

What about SIMULATED spinner hubcaps, like an LED graphic of your hubs still spinning? In fact, you could one-up the real hubcaps by having an LED graphic of your hubs staying still when you're moving, too!
