Treehouse Restaurant Built Around Redwood Like Beautiful Fungus
Posted by Kit Eaton at 1:45 AM on November 20, 2008
So modern treehouses aren't new, but the designers of this project in New Zealand have crafted something that blends fantastically with its host redwood tree. The fungus or chrysalis-shaped building—take your aesthetic pick—will be a smallish restaurant built by, of all people, the NZ Yellow Pages. It's currently under construction from laminated pine, plantation poplar and redwood thirty feet up a giant tree in a place north of Auckland. Getting there'll be fun when it's finished though: entry is via a 120-foot high treetop walkway. [Contemporist via Born Rich]

@takeshi: Well you can forget about dinner; they're recalling Lean Cuisine.

@jdbaile3: Kitchen fire? All I saw was a microwave. Looks like they're only serving TV dinners.

Looks like those Kiwis are still riding that Lord-of-The-Rings-was-filmed-here... wave.

Good thing it's under construction, otherwise I'd hate to eat there and have it rain.

I was going to say that tree place from Star Wars, but I assume that is what you are talking about.

Looks to be maybe 50' off the ground. Maybe parachute from 120' high walkway?

So its thirty feet up the tree accessed by a 120 foot high walkway ... something seems a bit lopsided there

@Ideapimp: It's a building gadget... and really does it ruin your Gizmodo experience for them to put up a post about a tree house?

@LittleJon: Really? I don't see a single tie-in between LOTR and this treehouse. I do see a major tie-in with eco-tourism, which has always been a large part of NZ tourism.
The Kauri forests are North of Auckland and similar in popularity to California's redwoods. Seems like a perfect place for just this sort of structure.
Kia ora, mate.

Theres a place in Oregon that has $1 milliion dollar cottages for rent (like a hotel) that are all tree houses, this place reminds me of those.

HGTV did a whole series on Tree Houses and some of them are amazing. I saw one where a hotel had several tree houses as guest rooms and they were reserved for months in advance. Very cool concept.

@Ideapimp: Point taken, but one could see this a tech, in a very old school sense of the term. For example the swiss family robinson tree house could be seen as a gadget, so this tree house is interesting in that vein of "tech"

@Thats Dr Bear to You: I'm not cutting myself because of it if that's what you're asking, but it does seem odd to stray from the theme. I mean, maybe they read a good book last week. Probably not something to talk about on this blog, no?

This is a publicity stunt by Yellow Pages. There were plenty of TV ads for it a few months ago, but now nothing. It is a cool concept, but I wouldn't call it a restaurant: there is no space for a kitchen. It is just another cafe, serving coffee and food made offsite.

@jdbaile3: How does the draft work in all this? at 32 feet up, and open air all around, you would expect it to get pretty chilly up there real quick.

"...the designers have crafted something that blends fantastically with its host redwood tree."
If said host redwood were about to give birth to a ginormous wooden balloon, that is!
Oh well,at least we know it Blends. Fantastically so.
