Transforming Miele S7 Vacuum Cleaner Can Probably Fly Too
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 5:00 AM on November 15, 2008
I usually don't get excited about home appliances unless you can cook with them or they vibrate, but this Miele S7's video has actually amazed me. Not only because it looks like it came from outer space thanks to the front LEDs, sensors, and LCD screen, but because of its smart design, which allows it to twist in every direction--to the point of laying flat--and transform with all kinds of built-in contraptions.
The Miele S7 has LED lights to illuminate every place it can reach while you suck pizza crumbles, Lego pieces, and dead spiders thanks to a 1,800-watt engine, built-in sensors that adjust speed and height depending on the surface, and a six-litre vacuum bag. As you can see in the video, every place really means every place: The S7 has a twisting head design that allows it to turn into every direction possible, including laying down on the floor, completely flat.
Unlike other vacuum cleaners, this one comes with all the different accessories to clean special surfaces built in its own body. No need to go to the closet to get them. Available in five different models, going from $US370 to $US551. [Miele via T3]

Was it just me, or was the soundtrack in the video straight from a horror film?

That's funny - I shot the tv ad for this a while back, and commissioned the music. Someone remixed it. Horrifically.
The ad (and original music) is on my website:

So... it's like the Dyson Ball I have but without the ball...
I like the automotive paint finish! Looks cool, I wonder how it cleans and how easily can you clean it...

While you would have to pry my Miele dishwasher from my cold dead pans, nothing sucks like my Dyson.

@jfj: The music in the version posted here is just plain scary. I thought the vacuum was going to turn around an attack the lady.

Hmm. HEPA filters? Bagless? Can be used as a handheld unit? I'm picky with my vacuum cleaners...

I actually have one of these already. I have the metallic grey one. Miele gave only 10 to my local dealer mr vac and mrs sew to see how people would like it. I was the first to get one in the U.S. I love mine. It really does swivel all over the place, the lights are awesome (they really light up), it has a hose that goes on for a long time, the bags feel like cloth and one of the coolest things is if I accidently suck up a sheet it does burn out a belt like my old machine. The thing looks awesome, sounds awesome and everything. The filtration is great too. I told the man I had allergies and he showed me with his particle counter that no particles come out of it. He told me by the end of next December he should have them on his website www.mrvacandmrssew.com when I came in for more bags . It is weird that I have had mine for months now and he hasn't even started carrying them yet. I know that they are going to go for more than $370, I paid about $600 for mine.

OMG the longer cord allows for a larger "operation radius". That just made me laugh. Something so simple but yet they make it seem like it's such an innovated idea and high-tech.
But yeah, the vacuum does seem pretty badass for a vacuum.

@aec007: In the video, it appears it does have a ball of sorts (see the moment where the feet disengage).

@dfwguy:
Agreed. This is Miele's answer to Dyson's ball system.
Miele has always made respected vacuums, but I've had my Dyson 4 or 5 years, and it's as good today as ever, and I have no reason to even consider replacing it.
Does this Miele take bags? I didn't notice. If so, then it loses any and all consideration.

@strider_mt2k: Work for Consumer Reports?
Only they recommend Kirby's. Where do you buy a Kirby? Where do you get bags?
I'll tell you: with great difficulty!
How, then, does this warrant Consumer Reports' eternal praise?

I've had the privilege of owning a couple Miele vacuums and a Miele washer and dryer and they are some of the most over-engineered, costly appliances I've every purchased. And worth e-v-e-r-y penny for the awesomeness they bring.
Dyson has nothing Miele except for in-your-face construction. I'm pretty sure that when designers and engineers grow tired of building Aston Martins and Mercedes-Benzs they go work at Miele.

@darex: What are you on about?
I just went to Consumer Reports (paid member) and Kirby is not their highest rated (that's still the Kenmore/Sears Progressive with Direct Drive 35922, score 75), not one of their checked vacuum cleaners, and not on their recommended list.
The Kirby Sentria does get the fourth highest score 67, as it should for $1350.
I bought the Kenmore a year ago, it's fine. Miele S7 upright isn't in their ratings yet. Dyson DC17 Absolute Animal scored highest of the Dysons (65), it excels on bare floor, good on carpet, but it's noisy, average on tool airflow, and lacks suction control, manual pile-height adjustment, and a retractable cord.

why does the music feel like i'm in a scary movie...I feel like someone is going to jump around the corner and kill the lady running the vacuum and the vacuum is just going to clean up all the evidence and no one will know anything happened, doing it all with playful ease. =P
