T-Mobile G1 Now Shipping with 3.5mm Headphone Adaptor
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:50 PM on November 20, 2008
I know, it's just salt in the wound for those of you with G1s in the audience. But for all you procrastinators out there, today is your day. The G1, with its solitary mini USB port, hasn't been the most headphone-friendly device. Now it's prepackaged with a 3.5mm headphone adaptor and everything is rainbows and sunshine. I picked my G1 up at the store last weekend and it came with this thing, along with the earbuds. I think I have about 8 feet of headphone cable when they're combined.

Yeah, but the 3G speed makes up for it and is "transparent" to the user. HTC should have included the headphone jack from the beginning.

Perhaps they are responding to the unhappy folks from the start? In that case it would be nice of them to include it at no extra charge, I mean it doesnt cost and arm and a leg, I saw one for $5 the other day.
I am getting my G1 in the mail today so I will look for the headset piece,.

According to the T-Mobile forums, they're looking for a possible way of sending said adapters to us early buyers. Not a huge deal, but it'd be nice if they did. :-)

3.5mm is indeed the standard 1/8" Mini-Phono jack, and will work with standard earphones.

Is 3.5mm the same size that would fit into a zune or ipod (or any other mp3 player)? Or is this the one that fits in cell phones and shit?

Off Topic a bit - but I heard a rumor that T-Mobile is sending out replacement batteries since the current one sucks so bad but I have not been able to find any proof of this online.. Anyone else hear this rumor?

Should have had a built in 3.5mm headphone jack from the start. How stupid was that move?

If this were an Apple product, there would be riots and issuance of store credits. Instead us TMo customers who bought their product day 1 will be forced to wait and see if maybe, just maybe they will give us one for free. But I'm not holding my breath. TMo don't let me down!

@UnseenLlama: Until you find yourself in a place that accounts for 70% of the country where there's no 3g but there is WiFi, then the lack becomes very visible.

@UnseenLlama:
Not stupid. No 3.5mm helps limit the G1 to tech-savvy people who are dedicated to Android, which buys Google some extra time to iron out some initial kinks (software bugs, OTA updates, etc) and gives devs some breathing room before their apps go mainstream.

You know, this is not so bad. It doesn't make sense in this day and age to not include a standard 3.5mm jack, but a USB adapter is a heck of a lot better than the wonky fastport on the Sony Ericsson W810i that I have. Seriously, after plugging and unplugging the big fat charger plug, eventually, the sound through the including headset/mic piece, or even just a regular fastport 3.5mm adapter can get rather wonky. At least the USB won't start fucking up like that.

@iAirmanshirk: Actually, I'm starting to see these things more and more. Really, if you're a TMo customer, this is one of the few interesting phones that they actually have if you want something with a discount (and a plan). There's really nothing in their stores other than Blackberries, maybe a low-order SE and Sidekicks.

@Kaiser-Machead's Cookie-Powered LEGO Machine: its definitely better than no 3.5mm jack at all - but to follow the cues of a 2.5 year old so-called "dumbphone" (a la the w810) and include a cumbersome adapter...i dont know - not exactly a "super phone" in my book...
but then again - looking at the hardware, it wasnt even close to begin with...

i wouldn't have you phone "stop working" unless you want to pay $140 for a headphone jack, which is the cost of the deductable on tmobile's crappy insurance. i found this out when i went in and wanted to replace my battery cover.

well, As far as the battery goes, it makes sense that it runs out quick when you use it a lot. I had been off from work fro 2 weeks and in this period of not having much to do, i turns to my G-phone a lot. Naturally the battery didn't last as long. Started work on Monday and for some magical reason, the battery lasted in the green for most of the day.
I dont use my phone for music playin much, but the adapter would be good as an option for when i want to listen to imem radio, and soon, possibly flash enabled radio station websites. G1= +1, iPHone = -1

@Chon:
Call and complain. It's not that expensive and if you nag enough there's a decent chance they probably will send you one. But it's so cheap it's not worth it to spend too much time on the phone trying to get one.

@Jrsy is back to being the dude, playing the dude disguised ...:
Yeah you can unlock it with an unlock code, though if to want to get one for free it will have to be after 90 days of continuous service on T-mobile. However due to the 3g radio not being in the same bands you won't be able to get 3g on AT&T, just EDGE.
Then there's the issue of getting out of the contract too and the ETF, though that is pro-rated.
I'm on AT&T and I want an Android phone too. Probably going to wait until next year to see it there's one that will support AT&T's 3G bands and also see if there are going to be even better phones.

@Truth Bringer :D: My battery life was absolutely attrocious the first week. I'd unplug around 8-10am, and I'd be down to to 25% by the end of the work day without much use at all. It'd be fully drained by sometime during primetime TV.
Thankfully the RC29 update totally fixed the problem. I can put decent, regular use into the phone, get the "15% left" warning but not have to plug in before going to bed.
If you're still having poor battery life, you probably either really do have a bad battery or are over-enjoying your new super-gizmo.
Though I'd considered getting an extended life battery (and accompanying bulge) for my Dash, I don't think I'd like any additional thickness on the G1 due to an extended life battery. Hopefully someone releases a larger capacity battery with the same form factor as the stock one. I think there might already be a third-party one.

Unlike most of the other early adopters in the comments here, I knew going in that this was going to be added to the box later and I'm not bitter about it because I made my decision to buy early fully informed.
I would, however, like to know if this is available to purchase separately. All I can ever find are really crappy third party adapters that have customer reviews claiming they fell apart after two days.

i was at a tmobile store in Redondo Beach Galleria (not sure of exact name). The guy told me they were NOT shipping. i did convince him he was wrong but it is funny how sure he was and how ill informed the average salesmen is. i bet most people in the forum tend to know much more about a given product.
