TiVo Completes The Evening TV Dinner: Adds Domino's Pizza Ordering
Posted by Kit Eaton at 10:30 PM on November 17, 2008
Ahh...digitally controllable TV, and the chance of fresh tasty pizza: That's what TiVo and Dominos Pizza are now offering. Broadband-connected TiVo users will be able to order pizza for delivery or pick-up (though that'd involve leaving the comforting hug of your sofa's cushions...crazy!) and then can even track the progress all via the TiVo interface. It starts today, it's free to broadband TiVo subscribers, and the only inconvenience is having to pay in cash when the food arrives. Press release below.
AU: We know this is coming to Australia next year... just a few more months before you can literally live on your couch.
LVISO, CA & ANN ARBOR, MI -- November 17, 2008 -- TV has never tasted this good. That's because TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), and Domino's Pizza, Inc. (NYSE: DPZ), the recognised world leader in pizza delivery, have teamed up to give broadband connected TiVo subscribers the ability to order pizza for delivery or pick-up, and track delivery timing, right from their TV sets using the TiVo® service. It's a service that cooks up the perfect pizza purchasing recipe.
"Our commitment to customer satisfaction is what has helped us become the leader in the global pizza delivery market, said Rob Weisberg, vice president of precision and print marketing at Domino's Pizza, Inc. "We are confident that teaming with TiVo on this novel, easy, and convenient way to order pizza right from the TV will be very well received by our customers. This is the first step in the future of customer interactions with the brands they seek to engage with and buy from. This is the first time in history that the 'on-demand' generation will be able to fully experience couch commerce by ordering pizza directly through their television set. You'll see a television ad for Domino's and you'll click 'I want it' through your remote. In about 30 minutes, your pizza will show up at your door."
Karen Bressner, Senior Vice President of Advertising Sales, TiVo Inc said, "Joining forces with Domino's Pizza creates an effective marketing and commerce tool for Domino's while enhancing and further distinguishing TiVo as the ultimate way to watch TV with a closed-loop advertising experience. This exciting new partnership offers yet another advertising solution as commercial avoidance continues to increase. With just a few clicks of the remote, TiVo users can order a pizza, then sit back, relax, and enjoy their program. Now, TiVo delivers the absolute best television viewing experience...and a pizza."
TiVo subscribers can seamlessly access their Domino's Pizza order from various advertising entry points on the TiVo user interface including Gold Star Sponsorship, Program Placement, Interactive Tags in live TV spots, and through Music, Photos, Products, & More by clicking on "Order Your Pizza." TiVo is serving up a piping hot new service that's truly made to order and gives a whole new meaning to the term "TV dinner."
TiVo subscribers can set-up a user name and password on Dominos.com so that each time they use their TiVo remote to place an order, they can log-in with a simple account number. Alternatively, TiVo subscribers can enter their delivery address, build their pizza order right from the television set by selecting type of crust, toppings, and sauces, and get the pizza delivered by their local Domino's Pizza.
Bressner added: "Our commitment to revolutionizing interactive advertising and commerce on the television is a direct result of the innovative solutions and features we provide. TiVo's growing list of interactive features also includes the ability to find and purchase products on Amazon.com related to a customer's favourite TV show or the convenience of being able to search for a movie that's playing nearby and purchase tickets through Fandango - all by using the TiVo remote."
Starting today, this new service is free of charge to all broadband connected TiVo subscribers and supports both delivery and pick-up orders. Viewers pay in cash when the pizza is delivered.

You have been able to order Dominoes pizza on your TV via Sky (the equivalent of Foxtel) in the UK for about 8 years!

Let me know when it will deliver a large pie from DiFara's.

Too bad they picked Dominos because their pizza is awful.

This is kind of cool (in a very lazy way). You can order a pizza during commercials without getting up. The Dominos Pizza Tracker is kind of neat but I always wind up watching it and wondering why my pizza has been boxed and waiting to be delivered for the last 20 minutes. Sometimes I want to call them and say, "Can you please deliver my pizza. It's been ready for a while now."

Too bad Dominos sucks....they closed 2 locations in my town and one in the next town over I don't think anyone misses them.

Why did they trademark "YOU GOT 30 MINUTES"? Shouldn't that be "You've got" or "You have"?
"You got 30 minutes" either sounds like a threat or like "YOGURT 30 MINUTES".

Why do you have to pay in cash? TiVo already has all your credit card information - charge that sucker!

I think that, for good measure, I'll be trekking out on foot to pick up the pie myself.

Gonna do the math on this one, let's see...
OK, so pressing buttons on my remote isn't really qualitatively any better than pressing buttons on my phone (and quantitatively it's worse) and it certainly isn't worth settling for Domino's.
I guess I wouldn't have to speak as much. Is that a plus?

Yeah, Domino's sucks unfortunately. But this opens the door to any of the pizza places that take orders online like Pizza Hut (eh, not good but better than Dominos) or Papa Johns (damn good pizza, but pricey).

Cool idea (i guess), but kinda pointless. When did ordering by phone become so troublesome that someone had to come up with a new way of ordering horrible food?

@nocar: No, it's right. The way your phrasing it has a totally different meaning, as if they're making a statement "You have got 30 minutes" after you order.
They're posing it as a question prior to ordering ie. "Have you got 30 minutes?" with the Have being implied so as to say "You got 30 minutes?" Yes? Then order one from us.

Say what you want about Dominos, but their online ordering system works extremely well. Others should follow their lead. As a software engineer myself I'm usually very tough on these sort of things, I give them two thumbs up for ease of ordering, they've even included a place to ask for extra sauce as well as a progress bar on what stage your order is at ie. prep, cooking, out for delivery. I love it, even if I do find their pizza a bit lacking.

@Hooray4Zoidberg: I've ordered pizza from Papa John's a few times and it's pretty convenient as well. I don't think they have a progress bar though. It has worked very well for me the couple of times I've used it.

Domino's is the worst. Why are they still in business? Just let their tragic excuse for pizza die.

@Hooray4Zoidberg: Actually, they're not asking you whether you have 30 minutes. They're telling you that you have 30 minutes before the pizza arrives, so use that time wisely.
notice the lack of question mark.

@baltwade: As a former delivery driver for Domino's I hated the pizza tracker. Sometimes it's just not possible to get a pizza out the door quickly for a number of reasons. For example if there are not enough drivers (corporate requires that drivers take no more than 2 deliveries at once), a pizza will sit on the heating racks for a while. Also, if there are 3 orders and the first third are going east while the 2nd is going west, the first and third orders will be taken first and the 2nd order will be taken last.
Your pizza will never be "boxed and waiting to be delivered" for no reason. It is to the benefit of the drivers to take as many deliveries as possible and as fast as possible since they make more money that way.
