Titanium Tricycle Ensures Trust Fund Babies Break The Bank, Not Their Bike
Posted by Jack Loftus at 7:00 AM on November 3, 2008
This $US2,500 tricycle is pretty straightforward. Made of titanium, the hook is the trike is nigh indestructible, meaning rich little snots can pedal around the driveway without fear of bending the frame or snapping it in two. Racing to the mailbox for the latest Hammacher Schlemmer catalog has never been safer. A carbon (fibre?!) seat, white leather saddle and white rims complete the look. Just be wary of that silver spoon in your kids' mouth as jockey for position at playtime. Hello? Choking hazard, anyone? [Jan via FirstBike]

While Hammacher Schlemmer doesn't actually carry this particular tricycle, they do have "The Award Winning Ergonomic Tricycle" ($160) http://www.hammacher.com/publish/75902.asp . Of course, if you're really keen on Carbon Fiber, they also have "The First Carbon Chassis Velocipede" at $14,000 ... http://www.hammacher.com/publish/10942.asp

Does it perform fellatio? No? Then why in the hell does it cost 2500 dollars?!

@Gary_7vn: Titanium IS pricey. Its usually double what a similar steel tubeset would cost. What they use in bikes is an alloy and doesn't reflect CM (commercially pure) titanium prices. Also, its harder on tooling, and requires higher skill to weld. It's still not worth 2500 though. There's only 4 welds and about $800 in parts on it. Like it says, its for rich kids, or bike guys who want it all.

@GrantH: the carbon fiber seat is probably the real right hook on the pricetag.
and more importantly, where the hell was this idea when some lady in a grand am hit me and totaled my bike when i tried to beat the light making it to school?

@Gary_7vn:
Sure, maybe you can buy titanium for $50 a pound, but I'm thinking that the process to make something out of it is what costs bulk of the money. I dont know for sure though.

Umm, my bike is made of steel, it's 13t years old, and I ride the crap out of it, and the frame is fine. How many 4 year olds are there out there, really, who are snapping their frames jumping legos?
Titanium isn't nearly as pricey as the marketing weasel want us to believe, right now it's around $50 a pound. The tubing here, might weigh 2 pounds.

@bagellord: It was around. Litespeed did it around 10 years ago. It was an employee only thing at first, then they did limited runs for a few years. And the seat isn't carbon fiber. Just the seatpost.

they use one of the most expensive headsets available, yet skimp out on the important parts. this thing is spec'd for looks, nothing more. the cranks and pedals are complete garbage. as far as the TI frame goes, they could have just substituted in a 7000 series aluminium at a way cheaper price. i'm also assuming that this is a bike being assembled over seas and if the TI is trom tiawan or china it's not really that good. that being said however it is pretty cool.

So, for the cost of 41 radio flyer trikes (at least at Amazon's price) you could get one of these...

@GrantH: Processing Ti isnt that hard or expensive in and of itself. It is however very time consuming and even easier to screw up if you dont know what your doing and how to do it well. The main problems are: heating the metal uniformly and keeping your welds clean and air free, both caused by the extreme reactivity of Ti. The best way to overcome these problems is to do your work inside of a glove box but finding one big enough to make a bike frame can be really hard and quite expensive. Regardless $2,500 is a ludicrous price for a childrens tricycle that will be grown out of within a few seasons. Even if it is made of titanium.
@rimplestultskin needs an aluminum macbook: A carbon fiber seat post is maybe 100 bucks if your getting top of the line race ready stuff which i am sure this is not. This one is probably in the $30-$50 range.

@im_back: almost no one uses chamber to weld. The way it is done is by flooding the tubes with Argon as you weld. Most new jigs, like that made Anvil accomodate this. This keeps the weld area O2 free. And actually you can pay several hundred dollars for a carbon post. This looks to be made by FSA (Full Speed Ahead), a high end carbon part maker. If so it would be in that $200 range. But it could be a knock of, given the shape though it would still be a pricey one.

A. A steel bike of good quality will be just as strong.
b. 2,500? I could get a full-sized titanium bike draped in campy for that.
c. They used a threaded chrisking headset with an adapter and a threadless stem. Talk about no class...
This is pure marketing bullshit. Paying 2,500 for a tricycle is bad enough, but this thing isn't even worth it. Hell, $250 is probably more than it's worth worth. Titanium does not a worthwhile product make.

I don't were they got the price, but according to Lynskey's own website, it's $999 for the complete trike, still damn expensive though.
