The Wii Fit Review: Six Months Later
Posted by Brian Lam at 3:20 AM on November 15, 2008
I've used Wii Fit exactly 6 months. Since the review, I didn't use it every day, or even every week, but since the very first time the game told me I was fat, it never really left my mind. Every meal, every time I passed on exercise to eat a little more ice cream, every time I exercised but stopped a little early, I heard those words resonating through the bit of side blubber on my sleight frame: "You're Overweight!"
I hate Wii fit so much. Sure, it indirectly helped me lose 10 pounds, but I f'ing hate it.
Bear with me on this long post with minimal mention of the game or hardware — the game is not what will make you fit.
Over a few sessions of playing the game, I started what would eventually be, more or less, the kind of body obsession assumed normal for performance athletes and underwear models, coupled with the kind of inferiority complex that one gets when you can't beat a video game, coupled with the resentment one builds towards machines that don't do your meatbot bidding. I mean, I could have dismissed the measurement tell me I was fat — BMI (Body Mass Index) is a crude stat based on height and weight that can't tell a fat person from a really really muscular medium husky guy. The problem is, Wii fit doesn't give a crap about your excuses or perceptions either. It assumed I really wasn't that muscular short guy, it assumed I was a medium husky with a little belly. And it was right.
I did all the exercises, focusing on the harder ones like the pushup and plank exercises, jackknives, the shadow boxing and running in place for sessions, usually for over 45 minutes. But then I got bored of EVERYTHING IN the game and couldn't stand to do more than one or two at a time. And I was not losing weight. I was exercising, it seemed, just enough to stimulate my appetite and give me justification for eating more, and so I was actually gaining weight. The in game scale told me as much.
When you're stuck on a level in a video game, some people look at strategy guides or cheats. The Wii Fit equivalent of this, knowing I was not getting the weaponry to obliterate my chub in the game, was to cheat by resorting to outside exercises like hitting the weights, and bicycling, running and hitting the rowing machine, my favourite for quick nearly full body exercises. This helped, and Wii fit's seemingly lame exercises were great setup in developing the necessary support muscles from head to toe to support rudimentary training — it was like physical therapy for computer nerds about to enter real sporting tasks.
Summer ended. Snowboarding season was approaching, and I knew I wanted to be lighter on my feet this year. It was great to have a goal outside of the game's mere quest for proper height to weight ratio.
But I was still not losing weight and eventually hit 77 kg. Anyone who runs on a treadmill with a kcalorie calculator realises that you can burn only a quarter of a cheeseburger's worth of energy in a 15 minute run, enough to go about 2 miles. Most nerds do not run this much in a day. Wii fit's charts, again, reflected the truth. Even though I was exercising, I was exercising semi regularly, but it was not denting my calorie intake. Without those charts, I would have been satisfied, but instead, Wii fit asked me "why do you think you're gaining weight?" and gave me a set of multiple choices. I choose overeating.
Let me tell you something about eating in my family. It was always my job, as directed by all grandparents, to finish not only everything on my plate, but everything on the entire table. One day, staring at a place of creamy French food, full after the first 3 bites, and thinking about what Wii fit was telling me, and how far my goals were, I realised that I had to change. I felt a bit guilty, but I knew that where my family would disapprove, Wii Fit would make up for it. And sure enough, the charts showed my weight was dropping. First I was below 77, then 75, and then 73. Miraculously, this happened without the pain of extreme exercise and without the pain of extreme dieting. I lost about 1 kg a week, more or less. I never realised this is all it would take.
Checking the calendar, I had one day left til my 6th month of Wii Fit would end. And my BMI had dropped from 26.5 to a low of 25.01. If I lost another half a kilo, the game would crown me fit.
Then, work got stressful, with this economy. I eat when I'm stressed. So, I ate some greasy Chinese food. And the next day at lunch, I had a cheeseburger. I just couldn't resist and I didn't know if I had blown my chances or not at finding acceptance from this stupid game. I thought that I could keep from overeating, something I'd been practicing for 31 years, forever, but the binge made me realise it would never be easy.
The next day, I got on the balance board and took a test. I have to admit, I took my shorts off for the competitive advantage, but I didn't expect to make it: I scored a 24.91, low enough at 71 kg for Wii Fit to declare me normal even with my shorts on. I learned a new lesson, a few days of binging cannot overcome weeks of discipline.
And then, satisfied, I put the game away, ate some ice cream and booted up Fable II. As long as I never start Wii Fit again, I'll always and only remember the last kind word the game said to me, "You're Normal."
The game's core value isn't the exercises, which don't burn many calories unless you play them way beyond the point which a normal person will become bored by them. It's the fact that through charts and graphs and the in game coach, the game makes you think about your fitness and weight enough that you eventually realise you have no real excuse for being out of shape. And that you have no real choice but to go outside the game and figure out the answers for yourself in the real world.

There's a moral in there somewhere... Basically guilt=weight loss - if that had worked for me I'd be looking like Kate Moss these days... Oh well, I guess this is another reason I can put down for getting a Wii.

Dude, you don't look the same, you look leaner. A lot less bulge around the belly. I played the Wii Fit about 3 times since I got it on release day. Its just not that fun or addictive.
I am however blessed with a high metabolism as well as inefficient gut bacteria so my BMI is always going to be normal. [www.npr.org]

@Curves: I knew a gal who had naked polaroids taped to her mirror. Every day she'd wake up, go look at the polaroids, scream bloody murder, then go exercise.
Eventually she lost weight, looked good, other people noticed her, she cheated on her husband, and he divorced her ass.

@Novenus: I think that whatever you need to psychologically convince yourself that you need to change your life/eating habits for the better, is what you need. Even if it's an electronic device telling you that you're fat.
The nice thing about the wii is it also measures balance, etc. So you can figure out in a hurry how out of shape your core muscle groups are.

I seriously don't know why people bother with BMI. I'm at 25.4, eat like a horse at a buffet that just ran the kentucky derby (mostly healthier foods though) and people constantly tell me i'm "skinny". It doesn't take that much muscle mass to throw the whole thing off, when you consider how much more dense lean mass is than fat.

Good report, much appreciated, as I am considering a Wii Fit purchase for the family. Will we see another picture after snow board season (six more months and 10 more pounds)? Will you be returning to Wii Fit for affirmation of becoming uber-normal?
Say, does the Wii Fit do a good snow board emulation?

How tall are you Brian? I'm 5'8 and lost 20 pounds going from 190 to 170. If you had to get to 161 to be considered in a normal weight range for your height, I'm hoping your like 5'6 or 5'7 because I'm stuck at 170. While I'm sure there is more weight to lose in my mid section I'm not sure about 10 pounds worth.
I don't have a Wii and don't plan on getting one because I have gone through the exact thought process on how I had to change my eating habits (I still have an unhealthy addiction to ice cream too) and level of activity to have my workouts overcome my calorie intake.
Great job. There is a definite in the before and after.

"It assumed I really wasn't that muscular short guy, it assumed I was a medium husky with a little belly. And it was right."
Guys like that aren't buying the Wii Fit, it's overweight geeks that are buying it.
Me personly during the summer it's extremely easy to motivate myself to go running cause I live close to the beach (bikinis = extreme massive motivation), during the winter I tend to gain weight and get fat.

I've lost 35 pounds because the Wii Fit made me realize how fucking fat I was and made me feel like crap. I'm now only 3.7 pounds away from "normal" so yay.
But yea, it made me eat better and go to the gym. I've gone from borderline XL (some would argue I was in XL) to M now and pants 34,35 to 31,32.

Wii Fit is a great idea because exercising is extremely boring and anything that makes it more fun is great. I think the problem with the wii fit is game and not the balance board. Some other companies are coming out with fitness games which I hope will take the wii fit to the next level and make it a real workout.

Not that you need to post it here though... :P
But anyways, great article!
WiiFit remains at what I always knew it was: either a game that most people will say is awful, or a glorified oversimplified fitness chart.
The sooner people realize they have to get out and away from their consoles if they really want to get fit, or at least search for a solution that's NOT on WiiFit, the better.
I'm also overweight, a tad bit (read A LOT) more than Brian, and I also know my problem is overeating... though I should do more aerobic exercises than I'm doing now.
But unlike Brian, I just can't eat less. :P Just love food too much. XD

Yeah, my hatred of that little jingle followed by "you're overweight!" while my sad sack avatar looked suitably ashamed made me decide to change my diet.
So far I've lost 15 pounds by just watching what I eat and keeping to a running schedule that doesn't include "not enough time, I'll do it tomorrow." Another thing that Wii Fit did was shame me into not skipping days of exercise since it makes me feel like I just murdered a puppy if I didn't turn the thing on for 24 hours.
I'm putting the WiiFit away and buying an elliptical machine, though. Hopefully the elliptical won't make me feel like I've neglected some key relationship if I don't use it for a day or two.

@Brian Lam: Yea, I thought about taking those but I was so incredibly embarrassed about my body that I couldn't take the picture of when I was obese. I've dropped my BMI by at least 10 (I don't know exact figures because I started Wii Fit on my brother's Wii at my permanent residence and continued weighing myself on my own Wii at college) And it's not like I'm SKINNY now, I mean I'm still technically "overweight" but my peak was 215+ and I'm down to 181 now and the majority of it is thanks to eating healthier. I'm not even necessarily eating less either, I'm just eating more fruits, veggies, etc. Absolutely no fried stuff or microwavable foods (except for the occasional Lean Pocket). I'm a lot happier with myself now although I know I still have weight to lose.
Last year walking around campus (I tend to walk fast... dumb habit, I guess) and I would be out of breath by the time I get to my dorm. I hated climbing flights of stairs because I would be noticeably breathing heavier. I don't have those issues anymore.
The first two weeks you go on some new diet or exercise routine, it's going to suck. Get past those two weeks and it gets so much better.
Anyways... Wii Fit helped indirectly by making me feel bad whenever my Wii guy got all round lol. It does well in keeping track though because you can see your progress. I felt really, really good whenever the BMI went down. My friends on campus all noticed a difference when I came back and I've lost maybe 7 - 8 more pounds since then. The best feeling is when you put on your old clothes and they're big to the point were they make you look fatter because you just have so much fabric hanging off of you.
My booze tolerance went down though. :(

Here is the chart of my Wii Fit loss, from the time I started using it (225lbs) to just over 200. I'm now in the 195 range.
The exercises aren't much, but just being aware of your body, taking the 5 minutes to do the daily weigh-in so you can track how your body metabolizes food and shows the results of cardio exercise makes ALL the difference.

Funny thing, I used to be the regular average couch potato overdosed by beer and chips, til one day I couldn't stand the abdominal pain my "fatty liver" as my doc called it. I had a Wii, and I thought I'd never go to the gym for personal embarassment, so I might as well give the Wii Fit a try. I started with 210 lbs, along with a healthy diet, and kept on doing the easiest ones (I hate yoga to this day). I didn't even bother taking a before/after picture because of being overly ashamed of myself then.
Three months later, after a daily workout, specially between static jogging and 10 minute hulla hooping, plus the casual exercises, I'm down to 177lbs. Keeping the motivation going is really hard, but it does work. I'm sure I would have gone further by going at the gym, but for the meantime I've changed so much and feel a whole lot better.
Just my two cents there.

You know, I think you just plain look better in the after photo. Thinner? Hard to say. Definetly look better around the neck and cheekbones, though.
I think it could be that the power of your Wii Fit hate has made you stronger with the force, and perhaps your true dark-jedi self is coming out, more powerful than ever before... it sure is good that you wear that santa hat, or I'd be creeped out.

@JChristopher: i agree. you're noticeably leaner around the neck and the arms have much better tone than before. you've also hit the nail on the head about health and fitness. its not about having the perfect diet all the time, or exercising til you drop. just try to make the healthier choices on a regular basis, moderate the amount you splurg, and do something to maintain the muscle mass you have and maybe gain a little more sometimes.

@BEERxTaco:
It's an exact result of the BMI index. The board itself is accurate to 2 pounds which is better then most consumer scales.
For someone to HATE the WiiFit because it gave them their BMI results then what they REALLY HATE is themselves.
If you are overweight then you are overweight. Hate no one but yourself.

@MBPro: I second that (and congrats BTW!)I did take pics before and after, mainly to remind myself how far I had let myself go,and also to show that "yes,I've been there before" for anyone who takes one look at me and says "you've never had a weight problem, you don't know what you're talking about"
I don't have a Wii Fit (my dad does),but I heard all of the controversy when some kid got told s/he was "fat" and the parent(s) got all bent out of shape. On one hand, the person who mentioned how ridiculous those BMI charts are was right on target...I used to weigh 270 and I weigh 235 now,but I am also much more muscular and healthier. According to those BMI charts,I should lose ANOTHER 35 to be 'normal'. Perhaps a 'normal crack-head',but not a normal 'person'! I don't really agree on Nintendo's wording..."normal"? I guess if you're not that, you fall under the category of "freak" maybe?
On the other hand,I have never seen collectively so many overweight people in my life as I have in the last few years. Not people with a little tummy, but full-on Austin-Powers-Fat-Bastard overweight.
And finally,I am 100% with you on the clothes thing-in fact I have taken to buying higher end clothing in my current size to give me incentive to remain in that size. I gave away a lot of my big boy clothes cause I have maintained my current weight for 2 1/2 years now,and have no intention of going back to my old weight again.

One good thing about bloggers is you usually don't have to see pictures of them. Sadly, prudence is as dead as chivalry.
Say, does anyone want to play a game? I spy, with my little eye, a moustache in desperate need of shaving.
(If I'm to be banned, so be it. It was fun while it lasted and it would be a fitting time to go.)

This is the best piece of journalism I've seen in Giz for some time. If it hasn't already been stated, this should be a standard that more of Giz's authors aspire toward in their own writing. It's great to be snappy and sarcastic, or tongue-in-cheeky, but beyond the gadgets it almost seems as if Gizmodo's authors forget about the writing aspect of tech journalism.
I loved this article and thank you for posting it.

@gothamdarkknight: Actually depending on your metabolism you can, but not nearly as much as you would if you were working with weights, and it also depends on the type of cardio workout you are doing. Running/Biking won't help you bulk up hardly at all. Whereas a rowing machine can if you crank up the resistance and do shorter times on the machine...
I'm not saying you are wrong but that is a pretty gross generality.

Way t'GO Brian!! I have to say your take on the wii-fit is dead-on. My experience was similar. Since July I've managed to loose about 40 pounds. Started off at 172, now 130 (at 5'5"). I've been using it every night working my way up from half an hour to 2 hours, sometimes 3 (with a lot of stationary jogging), but your right the use of charts and graphs are the key to wiiFit, its really opened my eyes and got me thinking about fitness as a part of every day life.

I agree that the Wii needs some program changing. Saying "you're overweight" each time you weigh even if you have lost weight is not encouraging. On the other hand my daughter who is 19 and i have been using it for 2 months and enjoy it. It's convenient and has a lot of choices for working out. If you only have 30 minutes to spend to workout you don't have to drive there and you can move for 30 minutes which will always improve your health and your overall attitude. My hope is they will reprogram some of the responses and work towards more encouragement.
