The iPhone OS 2.2 Rumour Round Up
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 5:15 AM on November 4, 2008
The iPhone OS 2.2 is taking shape at a good rhythm. The user interface is being refined and development of new features keeps going on steady. While I'm sure most of us can only think "copy and paste! copy and paste! copy and paste!" and increased speed and reliability, there are a few new things that we would definitely like to have as soon as possible:
Walking directions
Having just arrived to New York, I would definitely use this feature more than anything else. This would make Maps a lot more useful for all pedestrians, who can make a better use of the iPhone hardware than drivers.
Public transport information
Another great feature specially for big cities. I wish they could invest more on this, like connecting to status servers of public transport networks. That would actually make it perfect for commuters.

Street View
This will allow you to see any location in Google Maps that has Street Views, which is useful to get familiar with unknown places and for those people who are map-reading impaired.
Share location
If you are in the Maps application, you can share a location by just clicking a button, which will send an email with the URL to see the address in Maps. It's not actual real-time location sharing (and very low tech) but since we don't have any kind of copy and paste, it's better than nothing. Other than actually talking on the phone, that is.
Line-In sound access for developers
Apparently, the new OS update allows developers to have access to the sound part of the iPhone hardware. This opens the door for better microphones or high quality voice recognition.
Over-the-air podcast updates
This one will make TV and radio lovers happy, as many programs would be available from anywhere rather than having to connect to your computer every time you want to synchronise to get the lastest updates.
Japan will also get exclusive Emoji emoticons, as well as TV streaming support using a Wi-Fi accessory. [iPhone Hellas, MacRumors, Apple Blog]

@Derry Quinn: Was 1.1.3 $20 or were the apps $20?
I remember at the time that 1.1.3 was supposed to be free but if you wanted the iPhone apps you had to pay the $20. I also remember in practice that when it first launched people weren't able to get any of the 1.1.3 functionality without buying the apps. I don't remember though if that eventually got sorted out or not.

There are two or three things I'd use copy and paste but I can do without it. The OTA Podcasr downloading would be awesome, right now I use Podcaster.Fm and it works great but there's podcasts that I used in iTunes that aren't in podcaster so that'll be a welcome addition. Other that I'm good, I really care for nothing else in this update. Like others I'd like Safari to be a little more stable. Hopefully Apple will make that happen.

To me opening the door for line-in is so much about enabling better mics or voice recognition as it is enabling things like line-in recording, audio f/x processing (making the iPhone a portable, multi-touch fx unit would be pretty damn sweet), etc.
Although line-in could allow for better mics, proper use of the headphone line-in jack could provide similar results if high quality microphones were used.

@Hickeroar:
The maps additions are amazing imo. I'm much more excited over those than copy and paste (although I would love it very much, but I'm not crying over it).
Everyone needs to just chill out with "COPY PASTE NOW LOL" type stuff (not to poster just in general). Apple and AT&T know we want it. And they probably kill a kitten for each time you ask for it.

I think Steve Jobs is purposely (and personally!!)delaying copy paste so he can put up a slide at some keynote in the future that's all black with white "Copy, Paste" whilst spreading his arms and flashing his best "I AM YOUR GOD, BITCHES" face...then saying, "Isn't it amazing....simply stunning!" or somesuch nonsense....
He seems to like doing that.

@braindead360: It's never really been about the soft cap. It's a little about using the cellular data networks to send large amounts of info constantly, but mostly about the licensing of the songs. The current setup means that even if Apple had permission to sell songs over cellular data networks from the studios, they'd still have to pay AT&T et al. for the service. Lots of red tape.

How about "Plays Nice with ActiveSync".
As a business tool, the iPhone is sorely lacking. In order for me to get my iPhone to give me push calendar, I have to have Google Calendar sync with my copy of Outlook and then I have to use Nuevasync to push my Google Calendar to the iPhone. A better method would be to have the iPhone 3G to actually do what a Blackberry has been able to do for years.

I suspect that this business a round Apple's neglect of copy/paste is that they're stumped on how to make it super easy, but at the same time refuse to dish out a stopgap measure until they can get it up to whatever crazy standard they may have for it. Are there apps that can copy & paste on jailbroken phones right now? If so, can anyone who's tried it tell me if it works well?

Oh come on. You guys know Apple. They aren't going to put in Copy and Paste until Apple thinks it's ready. Knowing Apple's attention to detail and the user experience, they are probably going to hold off on it until it's tweaked just right.
In a nutshell: We are probably going to be waiting for it, but it's for the better.
Also: I wonder if Street View works with the GPS? Because that would make me actually use it. And the public transit support rules as well.

@Blinklink11: Too true. We should probably just start settling for what we have already and quit begging for the same basic features that everyone else has in their phone in order to make ours that much better. We should just take what Steve feeds us and be grateful that we're even afforded such a wonderful opportunity like being able to purchase the iPhone.
No one's saying "Damn you Jobs for making me buy a phone without Copy/Paste!", but it blows my mind (as well as others', I'm sure) that a feature that would obviously please a vast majority of both present and would-be iPhone owners a great deal. Especially when it's such a common feature to begin with. It's like they're doing it on purpose, sort of akin to a parent who won't give their spoiled child ice cream until he stops asking her for it. Except we're not children, we're consumers, and we deserved to be listened to.

@Hickeroar:
Think of the iPhone as a really souped-up iPod, not a miniaturized Mac. The iPhone is a device intended for data consumption, not content creation.
Copy/cut/paste is a fairly frivolous feature, and while a lot of people have been requesting it, most people are content with their iPhones. While I certainly had moments when I thought, "A clipboard would sure be handy," it's never been in a deal breaking context, nor has it ever happened with any notable frequency.
Maps, on the other hand, is actually rather important in the iPhone's context. Many people, including me, use it frequently, and since I hardly ever drive, having pedestrian routes would be a big boon for me.
Furthermore, cut and paste isn't as trivial as a lot of people claim it is. Sure, Apple could just slap on a few buttons for those functions and then half-ass a clipboard like some app developers have done, but that's not elegant, nor does it take security and performance into consideration. I'd say Apple has resisted a clipboard for the very same reason they've barred app developers from running their software in the background.

All very useful, but I'm most excited about the over-air podcast updates. That would be great, especially if it supported 3G, which I highly doubt because AT&T would flip its lid if Apple allowed you to download shows that were hundreds of megs in seize from their already unstable network.

@rcast1986:
I never said a clipboard wouldn't be useful. Certainly, I'd love to see Apple implement it. It's just not a need-to-have feature for me.
In any event, I'm sure there's an excellent reason Apple hasn't put it out yet.

@OMG! Ponies!: I always had trouble getting Google Calendar synced with anything (Thunderbird, my old phone, and now the iPhone). I decided to just bite the bullet and go for a hosted Exchange account. At around $9 a month (roughly the same as MobileMe), I can use my own domain and all contacts, calendar items, and mail (with push) are synced instantly and flawlessly between my computers and phones. Oh, and that monthly fee includes Outlook 2007 and Entourage.

@stre: I'm not saying this because I'm a fanboy (So what if Apple products, for the most part, have failed to let me down, therefore, I use them?). I'm saying this because it's what Apple does. Apple does not give a shit for timeframes. They just simply are not releasing it until Apple themselves believe it's good enough for the general public.
And as for "FANBOY OMG", I use Apple products because of the ease of use and the superior UI, not to mention multitasking features such as Spaces and Expose.
Also: MobileMe was very much a bucketload of fail. Good thing I don't even use it.

@bpapa9013:
It's dead straightforward on a full-sized OS proper. You've got loads of RAM, and a quick means to actually copy text (be it keystroke or menu).
On a device like the iPhone, it'd be straightforward to implement if you want the feature alone, but if you want it done right, you need to figure out how you're going to deal with a clipboard and not have it waste too much memory (or be too slow if you opt to cache it), and the interface is different enough to make implementing copy/paste elegantly a nontrivial task.

@chasema: I doubt that particular application. The impedance on a 1/4" guitar pre-amp is not the same as a line in. Line-in has power behind it. Since they've already got the circuit running off a low-power amp, I'd bet it'll let you do things like develop a "high quality stereo recorder" peripheral that snaps onto the device, like many iPods of the past. But I don't think they somehow figured out how to squeeze a transformer inside there and waited until now to turn it on.

@Colage: That's funny, because I have a WinMo phone and I use Copy/Paste at least a few times a week. Often I pull up a website or document on my phone, copy a chunk of data into an email or text message. It is incredibly handy. Also, if I get a text message and it contains, say, an address I want to save, I can just copy that right into a contact. Easy.
Now, I'm sure you all will really enjoy the walking directions / public transit stuff. I have that now (like many WinMo, Blackberry, Android, and other non-iPhone users), and it has come in handy quite a few times.
That does get me thinking though - why was the iPhone last to the party on things like Street View (Sept 17 for the rest of us), Public Transit, walking directions, etc? Do you think that perhaps now that Apple and Google are in DIRECT competition in this market, you'll see this delay (already 45 days) stretch out even further? Google could always just blame "limited developer resources" for not developing for the (at best) sixth-largest mobile platform. "Other projects were just a higher priority."

I sincerely thank you for skipping my post entirely and saying "lulz but th3yz all got it 2!!!!"
Just because other mobile operating systems have the feature doesn't mean the feature is implemented right. I suppose one could argue that worse is better, but that's not how Apple works when it comes to fairly inconsequential features like cut/paste.

I can think of several things I would like to see:
1. Get email working properly. Sometimes it fetches and other times it doesn't, make it push as promised.
2. Turn by turn navigation with voice prompts so I don't have to play with the damn thing while driving
3. Improved 3G reception and switch over
4. Real solid voice dialing that is button activated so I don't have to look at the screen and it voice prompts me for actions
5. A few less hangs & crashes of the phone OS and Safari
6. Ability to edit documents and spreadsheets
7. Copy & paste both within and across applications
8. selective restore in iTunes when I just want to restore a particular data or application and its settings without overwrting everything

i would love to have the software smart enough so that you talk in edge and surf/data pull in 3g.. i appreciate the higher voice quality and ability to talk and surf but i would rather have a better talk time!! edge is fine in voice quality.. and 3g is great for surfing... just add some sort of power saving feature that you can turn on .. so it happens automatically!

@epistemus: Well, on an iPhone, if someone texts you an address, it comes as a link that will open up in maps, and from there you can save it to a contact, so copy/paste is not necessary in that situation. I had an HTC 8125 (then 8525 after I had to return the 8125 3 times in 90 days, so AT&T upgraded me for free) and I honestly never once used copy/paste. If I wanted to send some text from a webpage on the iPhone to a friend, I would take a screenshot by holding down the home button and sleep button for a second and then email the picture (you could also press the + icon on the bottom of the webpage and email the link). Of course, I'm just a student and maybe you are more business oriented, in which case I can understand wanting copy/paste. Also, I live in Houston and moved here two years ago, there are still lots of places in this city I don't know and maps has saved me many times. Street view is a much more helpful update for me. I think there are a lot of variables that makes people disagree on this copy/paste issue.

@chasema: Would that mean that apps can use the button on the mic of the earbuds? So that you could use voice dialing apps without getting your phone out and pressing a button which completely defeats the purpose of voice dialing. Or am I completely wrong on this?

@epistemus: I think everyone forgets that other devices (palm, blackberry, winmo devices) have A LOT MORE BUTTONS. That's probably why it's complicated on the iPhone: one button. Copy paste is not trivial on a touch screen when single/double taps already perform certain fuctions and the only button takes you to the home screen. Maybe they can use the volume buttons on the side in conjunction with screen tapping.
