The DIY Mac Pro Mini: Turn that Broken MacBook into a Teeny Desktop
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:45 AM on November 16, 2008
An intrepid modder was given a sad, water-damaged MacBook and turned it into his own little Mac Pro Mini with a little know-how and a $US40 Mac Pro case knockoff. His MacBook's motherboard worked, but LCD, HDD, battery, memory, keyboard, and DVD drive were all busted. After replacing the HDD and memory, he set out to stuff his cheap-o case with the corpse of his MacBook.

The mod takes a lot of soldering, fitting, and cooling, but none of it is particularly complicated and a bigger case would probably simplify matters. The finished product is a fully-functional desktop version of the MacBook, and probably has a better cooling system. It's a great mod, I love that he started out with something broken and finished with an operational and even enviable system. [Wolph Bite]

@Jon B.:
I agree that you can find something cheaper with better specs, but isn't that a moot point when discussing the Apple lifestyle?

The reason the Dell monitor is there is because Apple charges waaaaay to much for their monitors.
I'm a graphic designer, and the Apple monitors DO have superior color accuracy, but the contrast ratio is abysmal and not worth a fifth of what Apple charges you.

Dell? I feel like it was almost the complete package. The work is still excellent though. Kudos!

Very pretty. I actually have a macbook at work whose battery is no longer functional, and whose chassis is messed up at work. I'd much rather use its innards than the piece of crap G5 I'm using now.

@thefutureisnow:
It's actually quite smart. The same cinema monitors for apple and dell are built at the same factory. Plus there is a three hundred dollar difference between them..and the quality is practically the same besides appearance.

To me the biggest joy of a "Mac Pro Mini" would be the ability to put in a dedicated graphics card.

Did anyone else pull out their "WTF?" card after reading that statement? I mean, was he using his computer to assist him in learning to swim with knives?

@nachobel: hmmm actually had to read that a second time. Damn, I just keep mine on my desk, and take it to school sometimes. Sounds like he had dropped it, then tried to pick it up multiple times while ultimately failing.

@mykalt45: If by apple lifestyle you mean Spend way more for something that have a lower specs that some cheaper similar, then go for it.
Just external design and "lifestyle" does not make a smart choice, unless you want to by a ferrari with an old beetle engine just for show.

Nice mod. OT: I'd like to suggest that Apple provide better design or warranty coverage. In a short time, I've seen dozens of Macbooks and MacBookPros that were damaged by a small spill. Where is the design logic that a user "USES" their portable as a portable? is it that expensive to engineer in a seal or gasket to protect the critical components? I'm not saying protect from total immersion, but jeez, accidently knock a water bottle over and you are out $500-$1500 for accidental damage.
Free advice: remember to think fast. When a spill happens, IMMEDIATELY REMOVE all power and the battery from the device. And be honest with the tech as "they" know when they open up a case what the cause of failure was. New laptops also have liquid indicators...

@Jon B.: You must not be a very intelligent Graphic designer since you apparently don't care for color accuracy. Color accuracy in print work is mucho important. Just how am I coming to the conclusion that you aren't very intelligent as a Graphic designer? Because you said "Apple monitors DO have superior color accuracy" That is 100% incorrect. Apple monitors look "wow" everything is over saturated. There's still no way of overcoming the 8-bit LUT driving the monitor. Many Dell monitors using SIPS or MPVA LCD technologies also have 8-Bit LUTs giving the same dynamic range and color ability that the Apple monitors have - The only difference is calibration. That's where hardware calibration comes in. A person serious about graphic design would know what hardware calibration is and where it comes into play. But you do not because you're not a serious graphic designer.
