The Complete List of Dead Circuit City Stores
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:10 AM on November 4, 2008
It's official. Circuit City is closing 155 stores, as the Consumerist broke yesterday. They're also "reducing future store openings," but whatever, you wanna know if your local Circuit City is gone. Here's the complete list of stores slotted for obliteration.

Does anyone remember that Circuit City, just a few years ago, was the best performing company in Jim Collins' book "Good to Great"? Obviously, Mr. Collins' approach to management is worth some reconsideration given the fall of Circuit City. It would seem a new approach to management would be worth considering. true, they were high performing, but recently i heard that that they got rid of many experienced sales people and hired sales personnel that lacked. and so their sales declined. that, plus a poor economy....! i'm sad to see the store close. between pc rich + sons, bestbuy and circuit city, i found the customer service at cc the best of the 3 stores.

@turi319: Yeah!!! No SH$T! they make it SOUND like a deal, when in fact normally you can go to Fry's and get same product for less or same as THEIR (Liquidator's CC) sale price....so bring the REAL sales on, not the BS ones.

@geiko: Mine Too, Vista, CA, but there is a Fry's right down the street and I never shop at CC anyway, but I'm sure they'll have a huge sale to deplete inventory most likely. So MIGHT check them out before the final locking of doors and wrecking ball starts swinging.

A couple of years ago the CC closed in my town. Just for the record, the sale was your typical 20% off inflated prices. Probably won't be any great deals to be had.

The one I go to is predictably on the list. I rarely go there, but I do check it out from time to time for good deals. They have so few customers per week that sometimes they knock off video games or movies to stupidly low prices (<$5) and they're still on the shelf weeks later.

Very sad...the one near my place is closing. I personally liked that place a lot better than my best buy. The people were nicer and they tend to have a better assortment of laptops, and lower prices on TVs...two items I would much rather buy in person rather than risk them being damaged during shipping.

ha! I knew the one in Compton, CA would close. It's smack dab in the middle of the ghetto and it's always busy. This is wonderful news. The stores in Oregon are to remain open. Now I can continue to use them as a price match source. If you really look, sometimes you'll a decent mid-range item at a lower price. Take that price over to Best Buy, and they'll match it. So not only do you take business away from Circuit City, you have Best Buy get less money from a sale. WIN/WIN.

You know .. I actually like circuit city. They had one near me in Westfield, Indiana. The store was stupid because they picked a high price location, that was hard to get to and very few people went there. However due to issues I have had with Best Buy and the generally better deals at CC, I went there was I given a choice by price. If a DVD was the same price between the two places, I went to CC. If it was cheaper at BB, I went there. My money went to the lowest prices. I just think it is sad, as BB will have limited competition, and by doing that, you will only see prices go higher. I guess I will buy more online, versus at Brick and Mortar stores.

Ten years ago I made all my big ticket purchases at CC. Always dealt with the manager and got better prices than the competitors. Then they dumbed down their inventory and changed policies. I found that Tweeter would still deal and price match. BB turned me off with their coupon deals; 10% off three DVDs, but only three of the SAME DVD.
The brand new Cumming, GA, store is gone as are all the CC stores in the metro Atlanta area. I visited it last month and found it was only a quarter the size of earlier stores. Selection really sucked.
But the good news is that I don't have to worry about those big ticket items any more. After 30+ years with a Fortune 50 company I've been laid off too. Welcome to the club CC and Tweeter.
/ and Cumming is a fine name for a town, seeing we're right next door to Sugar Hill and Ball Ground.

What idiots. I can't imagine how much they spent on the brand new store they just opened in Hilliard, Ohio, only to close it 6 month later. Of course, it epitomized the failure that they are as a business. No advertising about the new store at all - I happened on it literally accidentally - and the giant marquee out front calls it "The City" so that if anyone had any doubts that it was a new Circuit City, they were quickly re-enforced. How many people driving by even knew it was a Circuit City? Not many, I bet.
But the outdated store in Dublin, Ohio, buried in one of the most aggravatingly high-traffic areas in the city, remains. (and I don't mean "high-traffic" in a good, lots-of-consumers way - I mean it in a I-don't-even-want-to-go-there way). Perfect.

It really depends on the Best Buy that you shop at. I got a laptop at one location and had no hassle. I got a desktop at another location, and when one guy failed to get me to pay the Geek Squad to _remove_ preinstalled software for me, he passed the sale off to another person who just tried all the same tricks on me. I used to work next door to a Circuit City. We would get a lot of their customers because they refused to help anyone unless you were buying a high dollar item like a television. People literally came in saying they coudln't get help. Simple things too, like buying a router. So I'm not surprised they are shutting down based on that experience. Although that particular one isn't on the list, which is oddly humorous

@hefavitzen: actually I got a few good deals at CompUSA like the game Gothic3 for $15 (was going for $40 at the time) and some DVD-R discs for like $10 for 50. So who knows what will happen...

@mferrari:
Y'know, one of the two nearby locations is closing, and they are also right across the street (well, across the highway) from a Best Buy. The other one, which is staying open, is about a block away from a Best Buy. It'd be really interesting to see this list ordered by how close the doomed stores are to a Best Buy, Fry's or other major store that severely undercuts their prices.
Oh, and the only CompUSA in the area, which closed back in that big culling, was about a block away from the Circuit City that is now following suit.

@dOk: It's not like these are skilled workers with limited appeal within a specific trade. They hawk overpriced crap while wearing a red t-shirt. There's a million other stores in the area where they can do the same thing. I just hope they tell them "You're fired... Dog!". (Get it... firedog... heheh)
Maybe this will encourage some of them to go back to school or take that plunge and get a non-retail job. Either way, cruel tradition or not, the companies aren't in business to keep people employed. They are in business to make money. The real question I have is, how can you sell $3 cables for $80 all day long and still lose money???

@JDL1527: Not so in San Diego. Only one location has closed and that is 30-40 miles north of the city. There is one Best Buy and one Frys right near each other. The CC's are spread out in different neighborhoods and still probably do good business for those who dont want to drive into town to get to them.

Closing all the Phoenix area stores and leaving the Tucson ones intact is a curious strategy. It is well known there is more money in 1/4 of Scottsdale than there is in all of Tucson.
Maybe the shoppers from Mexico make up the difference.
Like I say, curious.

@NFLBLitze1: I agree. All I do is go to Circuit City or Best Buy and see what I want. Then I go buy it on either Ebay or Amazon or a similar site. If they lowered their prices to anything below MSRP ever they might have stayed in business.
I worked at Circuit City for 2 years and it was indeed unorganized. The only purchase I made there was to get a car stereo installed free when the stereo was on sale last week.
Best Buy is a joke too. Total rip off. People just chose Best Buy over CC because it was bigger and the appearance of the store was better.

@deadhouseplantz: Simply the market gaining better efficiency. Circuit City prices and service suck, consumers realize this, so they don't shop there. This doesn't happen overnight when the economy tanks, they've got to have revenue issues for months before they make these decisions. Now they're the excess fat being trimmed from the market.
It's the way it works, and it's better for consumers in the end.

@Some_F-in-ShiT_Ass:
it's a bittersweet situation. CBS 880AM made it out like NY/CT/NJ lost a prized possession, but in reality the central states suffered the most.
I'm glad CompUSA was the first to go, but don't really feel too much impact because of this. There are 2 Bestbuy's and countless staples (whom I favor to an embarrassing level) around me, so selection isn't an issue.
Retail is a bitchy dog-eat-dog world. I have worked in it for over a year (yes, even for "S.Jobs" in the fruit company, Inc.) so I feel the pain.
Times are changing. Whether it be BB or CC is irrelevant. The fact is, I'm stoked that poor practices and metrics are finally biting themselves [and the employees who will finally see the light at the end of the tunnel] in the ass
I'm seriously rooting for the honest worker and conumer in the end, but unless the unjust retail metrics work themselves out, you'll continue to see acts like this work out

@JDL1527:
CC actually didn't even consider Frys as a competitor, Frys has NO customer service to speak of. I worked in the Santa Cruz, Ca store for 2.5 years, and they entire time CC was trying to be more like Best Buy which is like the most retarded idea ever. CC's been tanking for the last few years and this comes as no surprise to anyone who has worked there and actually pays attention.

I will not miss CC when they all close.
Over the weekend I relented and got my wife a WII (mainly because I'm abount to upgrade my own system to a quad-core gaming ring at more than 3/4 the cost of the thing) So she has a coupon for CC, no issue.
Well, the fat, dumb one she speaks to says they are out of stock (we know they aare somewhat hard to find but read on) well, we asked the normal questions, such as do you know when your store is getting any, etc?
The answer from this manager: Well, we have an ad coming out for next Sat, and it will list how many units we are getting, we'll be open at 7am, you should try to get here and then see if you can get one.
Oh amn, I told him about the stores closing as reported by Giz, and his answer just confirms why they all should close.
We then went to a gamestop in the mall 1/4 mi away, where they had 3 left and picked one up ...
Yup, not going to miss them at all ....
