The Blackberry Pearl Teaches Consoles a Thing or Two
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:15 AM on November 13, 2008
Acidmods just can't get enough of hacking up our console controllers, and now the company has replaced the Wiimote's A button with a clicking trackball (a la Blackberry Pearl). The result is an easier way to scroll through webpages and certain menu systems, as you can see in this video:
However, this trackball was designed to work on more than just the Wii. Acidmods guarantees it for the PSP 300, PSP Slim, DS, Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers.
Unlike most mod demonstrations, Acidmods wants to sell you this actual product. They're not taking orders yet, but they will traditionally sell you the necessary hardware or mod your controller for you at an additional cost. The first link at the end of this post isn't up yet, but it should have purchasing information soon. [Shop via Acidmods and MaxConsole]

@basicvisual: I think that ship has sailed; the Costco near my house had a pallet of 'em.

Very decent mod. The blackberry trackballs are awesome and it seems to work perfectly on the wiimote however even with this mod I don't see myself purchasing a wii for any other reason than to sell it on ebay for a premium.

Looks like that dude's thumb was harmed during the making of this product mod.
Dried blood under the fingernail is not a pretty sight..

For menus, I'm not convinced that this is better than simply pressing up or down on the crosspad.
For browsing the web, the sensitivity needs to be increased because that's a lot of rolling to scroll down only 1/5th of the screen. The trackball would be useful when it takes into account the acceleration of rolling the ball. Until then it seems like a glorified up/down button.

While it's a cool mod, I don't see it as being very useful. I can hold the down button and scroll forever with no further effort, but to keep going down with the ball, I'd have to keep going back and moving it down again and again and again. It would get very annoying very fast.
