The 10-Hour Asus Eee: Big, Bad and Fugly
Posted by Mark Wilson at 8:20 AM on November 18, 2008
I'd thought that the 7800mAh battery for the MSI Wind was absurd, but one netbook fan got his hands on a $US62 12000mAh battery for his Asus Eee. The result, pictured here, adds over half a pound to the machine's weight and an uncomfortable incline to typing on the system. But it should offer 8-10 hours of battery life, too. Here's the more obnoxious closed shot:
As for the battery bargain, it's still available to those who can wield it over at DealExtreme.[Scott'Soapbox via Lilliputing and DealExtreme]

It sounds wonderful, but why does it have to make the netbook incline, why can't it just stick out the back, and keep the bottom flat. Seriously?

Speaking of sub-notebooks, if anyone is interested I'm selling my OS X MSI Wind on ebay. [cgi.ebay.com]
If this qualifies as soliciting or something I'm sorry... I just want to pay car payments.

Umm airplanes? Yeah watching some tv-shows and movies instead of being bored is WIN in my book.
Also there was a cooler version with the battery stretching out to the back and sides, so that it isn't so elevated.

Just because it's unconventional and doesn't sit perfectly flat like 95% of all the other laptops doesn't mean that it's fugly, it could simply mean that conformity really sucks people in.
There are some successful keyboards that are inclined. Seems like a plus to me - long battery life and a slightly more ergonomic angle (canceled out by the tiny @#$%&* keyboard, but still, more ergonomic).

meh... does not qualify for the term "fugly". It is a little out of place, but not fugly.

@purple-pillows: I know. They could've made the battery like an extra layer of thickness to the bottom. Kinda like the iPhone battery extender on the recent post.

@purple-pillows: I agree. That's going to be awfully awkward to get to sit on your lap without it sliding in between your legs all the time. Unless, you know, you want it between your legs.

why not spread the battery out so it's not a stand... like behind and across... there arent any ports back there... but 8-10 hours is pretty nice

What a terrible design. The battery could've extended the full width of the laptop or been a partial slice battery or something. You won't see that on my EEE 1000H.

not familiar with the standard battery life, but if the longevity of the charge was my prime concern the aesthetic hit is worth it, and personally i prefer the angle when typing...although from the images it is hard to accurately scale jsut how extreme that is

@Migo: Actually, the most ergonomic keyboard position is with the keyboard at a decline. When you type on a keyboard at an inclined angle, your wrists have to angle upwards and the resting of the wrist on the edge of the keyboard puts stress on the carpal tunnel.
Imagine standing up straight with your arms by your side. Your wrists are more or less straight to angled slightly inwards towards your thighs. That should be your natural typing position

Doing just the normal word processing, I can make a MacBook battery last almost 8 hours. Now, playing movies, that's another thing. I could understand aesthetics taking a hit for a long flight when you want to watch a movie.

I think it's funny that people will spend money on laptop stands that make it "easier to type" at a natural ergonomic angle, and that virtually all keyboards have flip-downlegs to help accomplish this... yet when an extended-life battery does it, Giz calls it fugly and an "uncomfortable incline" instead... (also when it's for a mac laptop apparently it's very exciting)

Have any of you actually tried touch typing on these little guys. I mainly just two or four hunt and peck on mine, my hands are too big, or the keys are too close together. I'm still waiting for someone to make a flat pack battery that's the same size as the bottom, but only a quarter inch thick. That would be worth my money.

@Barry99705: Yeah, I use the Eee 901 whenever I am away from home and need something to surf/chat on. I can type just about as fast as on a regular laptop or desktop. It's all a matter of getting used to the layout. The "1" position still gets me sometimes cause it's further left than normal, but the right Shift key is totally natural now and I can see why it's there instead of the up arrow.

Your question is self-answering, but let me run the logic for you.
1. If you need to be away from a power socket for 10 hours (like on a flight), then YES.
2. If you do not need to be away from a power socket for 10 hours, then NO.

that's ridiculous... i have the ASUS1000h and i love it, but i can't spend THAT much time on it. i find the battery life just enough for what i need to do. and then i'm never too far from an outlet.

@purple-pillows: Because these guys used cheaper lithium ion cells (that tend to be round) and not lithium-polymers (which tend to be flat). In addition they wanted to use the least plastic possible (again probably to save cash). They don't care if it's fugly, they just care that they can sell it at a profit.
