Survey Hints That Zune Could Double as Extra Storage For the Xbox
Posted by Sean Fallon at 7:30 AM on November 14, 2008
The most recent installment of the Zune newsletter includes a survey question that hints at the possibility of the Zune being used as additional Xbox 360 storage. After selecting "Yes" to the first question, readers are asked "Have you ever connected your Zune to your Xbox to do any of the following?" The first response to the question is "Use my Zune hard drive for extra Xbox 360 storage." One could interpret this as meaning that Microsoft is considering making the Zune official backup storage for saved games, Marketplace downloads, etc.
Yes, that would be a great reason to buy a Zune, but keep in mind that the question could refer to using the Zune simply as a means to upload pictures and audio tracks to the 360 (although that would be ridiculous because nobody would give a damn). And, of course, it may mean nothing at all. We shall have to wait and see if Microsoft does the smart thing here. [Zune Survey via Xbox 360 Fanboy]

@majortom1029:
You completely missed the point of my post. I said that it is a travesty that Microsoft is still using 60GB 120GB HDDs when you can get a 500GB drive for $50. And now they might offer you the chance to use a 1.8'' HDD with a non-portable device.
Also it is obvious that Microsoft made the Zune to compete with Apple's iPods. i didn't say anything about the Zune's quality.

@Shodan: OBviously you have never used a zune. I have an ipod touch and a zune 30gig and the zune has much better sound quality then the ipod.

I wish I could store downloaded media (read: video) onto external USB storage like PS3 does. That would allow me more room for actual game junk, especially upcoming installations.
Also, what the hell's taking so long w/ Zune/Live Marketplaces integration, what with shared logins, currency, backbone, design staff, etc.
I think it's all about stupid licensing legal fine print. Maybe existing licenses always stated that downloaded media would only always be specifically played on an Xbox 360 or Zune/Zune software or whatever.

That is just sad. You can get a 500GB hard drive for $50 and Microsoft wants you to use your overpriced ipod-knockoff with 1.8''HDD as storage? Pathetic.

If I could plug in my 120gb zune i'm buying tomorrow to my xbox and use it as extra storage, I would be in bliss.

Just got a Zune 120 yesterday.
This would be AWESOME. I freaking hate lugging my xbox hard drive to my friends house. A great idea would be games and marketplace integration. Browsing marketplace on xbox with your Zune connected would be nice because the marketplace on the player if fairly limited. Also having games that you could buy one Zune and play on xbox (or vice versa) would be a great value and more tempting.

@Kaiser-Machead's Cookie-Powered LEGO Machine: I couldn't agree more, infact i have been wondering why they haven't done that for a while. I never thought about using the zune as an addittional hard drive, i can't say I would use it a lot.

What would be nice to see is if Microsoft could manage to have some sort of rental transferal system, where movies you download from XBM can have a downscaled version be loaded into your Zune.

@Shodan: Right, let's pretend the point of this question is to get people to buy Zunes as backup HDDs instead of thinking like reasonable human beings and and realizing that having a convenient backup is a good idea.
Here's another fun thought: You go to your friend's house, and want to play a game with him that you already have saved to your machine. You can either A: Bring your entire Hard Drive, or B: Bring your zune, which is far smaller and you would probably have on you anyway.
Also, better device, stupid fanboy, etc...

@Shodan:
The term "knock-off" implies a product of similar design but inferior quality.
Zunes are a solid, quality device that meets and in many aspects exceeds the quality of its top competitor.
To call it a knock-off, is, in fact, saying something about the quality of the device and is also severely misguided.
..but what else can you expect from a fanboy?

well if you want a zune (for some strange reason)
you uploaded all the music you have (assuming we are talking about "normal" people) and you discovered that you have 40 to 100 GB left without a purpose then you could use it with your xbox you could for example load games and savegames on your harddrive and play from it

@Moonshadow101: If you could save to SDcard then you could use that instead of a Zune. SD card is smaller and less hassle, No?

forgive me if this has already been discussed but...why not just enable the 360 to read external HDDs? I have a 250GB HDD in my PS3 and two 500GB HDDs for external storage/backup that the PS3 reads just fine. I got the 500GBs for 100 bucks a pop last summer.

@Moonshadow101:
I was going to make a comment on the term, "Knock Off," but I see that's been thoroughly covered, and I have to say, I agree heartily. I am familiar with both systems, I have a third gen iPod classic, which I traded to my friend for the use of his Zune for a month so we could each get aquanted, and I must say, I was sad to have to trade back, the aesthetics of the Zune's display are much more pleasing than that stupid glaring white the iPod possesses.
As for Xbox data, it would be a convenient memory card for traveling games.

I'd love to be able to use a Zune or external drive as storage. My question is whether or not the transfer speed or USB 2.0 is fast enough to run games off a drive.

@TBM-Fan: Why would wanting a zune require a strange reason? The firmware is great, the song selection is good, Zune Pass is awesome, the zune pad works great, the screen is huge, storage is good, price is the same as the iPod...

@i38warhawk:
Since dual-layer DVD read speeds are not exactly blazing fast (not sure what speed the 360 drive is, but 8x = ~11MB/s) , I would suspect that running marketplace games off a Zune would not be a problem.

I post about this all the time. I don't get the hate people have for Zune's, I have an 80G and a 4G that both went with me on a trip to London. While on the plane I watched 2 movies on the 80G (Heartbreak Kid and Office Space) before the battery went dead and then listened to the 4G for 3 hours when the plane landed. The movies and songs were the same as they would have been on their iPod counterparts would have been. I just din't have a bunch of iPod douchebags whining at me because I bought something they didn't.
BTW - I also own an Acura, maybe you want to slam me for not buying an Audi? My TV is a JVC, are your pissed because I didn't buy a Mitsubishi?
Get over it you clowns, it a freaking MEDIA PLAYER, not a pacemaker. Buy what you want, let other people buy what they want. At the end of the day, if it's not yours, why do you care?
