Stevemail Promises Software Fix for Glitchy MacBook Trackpads
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:59 AM on November 6, 2008
A growing mass of people have been reporting that the omni-button trackpads on the new MacBooks are glitchy—every 50 or so clicks, the trackpad will stop responding for a few seconds at a time, even to hard clicks. Whether it's a hardware or software issue hasn't been officially confirmed by Apple, but a supposed email response from Steve Jobs promises simply, "Software fix coming soon." This isn't the first time there have been trackpad issues with Apple notebooks, but we haven't had any problems with our new MacBooks or Pros. What about you guys? [AppleInsider]

I have not had this problem on the MBP. However, it seems to me that the sound when you press on the trackpad is louder than on the MBP. Also, when compared to the Air, the trackpad is much more sensitive to 1-finger clicks. It is a breeze on the MBP, but somewhat delayed and less sensitive on the MBA. I wonder if that could be adjusted with software. I've compared it with the same keyboard settings.

Yep, I have the click issues with my MacBook Pro. It's slightly annoying and I'm glad there's a fix on the way.

So wait, I'm assuming that it's both soft and hard clicking, but if it's just hard-clicks that are affected, then I think I could be fine since I never use the button anyway. Well, no matter, it'll probably be fixed by the time I get one.

I've had minor issues with my new Macbook. About once a day it will stop responding to clicks; I can still move the courser, but clicking the track pad doesn't work. I believe it's a software thing because switching windows in os x usually makes it work again. Also I have yet to have the same issue while using windows under boot camp.

I just picked up a MacBook 2.4 GB with backlit screen and have noticed the problem. What are the specific computer specs that others with this problem have?

Learned my lesson when I bought a Rev1 MBP. The fans whine like a hollywood celeb, the palm rest is corroded, battery warped, screen burn-in, magsafe melted, and the wifi is dead - go go beta testing in the wild!

I don't have a problem with clicking on mine, but occasionally it stops tracking my finger for cursor movement, for a few seconds.
Hopefully this fix will correct that.

I always thought it had something to do with the calibration for the pad to tell the difference between a resting(?) thumb, and an intentional click. Most of the instances of failure come when I'm trying to click with the side of my thumb (doing a command+click is a good example of when that comes up), or when I'm trying to drag by holding down the clickpad with the side of my thumb, and moving another finger.
It seems like a simple enough software problem, so I haven't been too worried about this getting fixed. It'll be refreshing when it finally does happen, though.

@bkbkbk:
I think you're right. The rate of click registering as such is much higher if I use the tip of my forefinger compared to when I use the side of my thumb. So I've had to temporarily teach myself to use my forefinger to do the physical clicks (most cases I just tap to click).
Just by telling the OS (or firmware?) to accept a physical click as a click, no matter what, will make life 95% easier for me.

on my MBP, it's not "1 in 50" clicks, it's more like "1 in 5" I think it t software related though, b/c it seems like it happens mostly when I am trying to click into a txt-input window, more than when just trying to navigate around the desktop.
So great to be an early adopter!

Apples never have problems. Emperor Steve will give you a "fix" that really doesn't do anything, like a doctor prescribing placebos.

I got the new macbook pro and the trackpad bugs are a HUGE pain in the ass. I've disabled clicking and dragging to fix most of the problems but still glitches a lot. Damn them.

@Kaiser-Machead's Cookie-Powered LEGO Machine: It's just hard clicks. When I first got the machine, it was incredibly irritating. I've gotten used to it. Only reason I really tried hard clicking was the novelty of the thing. Now I only use it for dragging like on my old macbook and it's business as usual.

Only issue i've had with my new MB is that once in a while, very infrequently, it will act as if there is a dead-zone on the track pad. This usually only lasts for about 5 seconds and the pad starts to work again. Other issue I'm having though is the rotate-for-app-switching gesture. The app-switching icons come up but the selection will not change. Any word on a fix for that yet? Minor glitches, well worth being an early adopter, love my new MB.

It has happened to me that the cursor disappears or doesn't move for a couple of seconds. Another problem i found is that the track pad has become slanted to the right. that is the track pad is deeper on the right side which is where i usually make the clicks.
