Solar Vertical Lamp Blind Charges-Up in Daylight, Lights Rooms At Night
Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:10 PM on November 13, 2008
Sometimes a simple idea will make you react with ambivalence, but designers Yoon-Hui Kim and Eun-Kyung Kim's Solar Vertical Lamp probably isn't one of those. At its core it's a solar-powered lighting system, but unusually it's embedded in standard window blinds. During the day tiny solar panels charge up the individual lighting elements (LEDs?), and at night they light up. These guys have conceptualised the eco-friendly solution being an elegant lamp shape, but basically you could arrange the pixels however you liked. We wouldn't recommend the legend "love palace" and a great big arrow pointing at your bed. [Yanko Design]

You're right. This isn't making me react with ambivalence. My reaction to it is one of completely unadultered apathy.
I really couldn't care where this goes. It's not a brillantly eye-catching concept, nor is it repulsively stupid. It's not an especially practical concept, nor is it really infeasible.
"Meh." That's the one and only way to sum it up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a fully customizable led panel like that cost like... bazillions?

Can I keep the arrow, but use the words "Caution, Disappointment Ahead"? Or "Objects are smaller than when viewed with alcohol"? Or "It's a Fact:You're Hotter When I'm Drunk"

So what do you do for light during the day?
Open the blinds and you don't charge your solar cells.
Leave them closed and you burn through your solar-charged batteries, leaving you in the dark when the sun goes down.
How is this saving you money on lighting?

Can you toggle between "Love Palace" pointing to the bedroom, and "This Way to the Egress" pointing toward the door?
