Samsung X460 Packs Big Power, 14-Inch Screen Into Super Skinny Body
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:15 PM on November 11, 2008
The folks at Laptop Mag have gotten their hands on Samsung's slightly bigger brother to its ultra-thin Macbook Air contender, the X360, and they're absolutely loving it. The X460 is one of the thinnest and lightest notebooks on the planet with a 14.1-inch screen—it has all the style of the X360, but with a built-in optical drive and discrete graphics... okay, and a little bit extra heft. And the price tag's a reasonable $US1700.
For the money, you get a 2.26ghz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, 3GB RAM, a 320GB 5,400-rpm hard drive (no SSD option, unfortunately), a 13.1-inch LED-backlit display with a 1280 X 800 pixel resolution, a 256MB Nvidia GeForce 9200M graphics card, a dual-layer DVD burner, a 1.3MP webcam and an estimated 6 hours of battery life (though that's still subject to real world testing).
Laptop Mag especially liked the feel of the big, comfy keyboard, the graphics processing power, fast boot times (even with Vista), and a clearly-marked upgrade system for those who want a little more memory or hard drive space. At 1.25-inches at its thickest point, it sounds like a good option for those of us who want something useful and pretty, without switching to Macs. [Laptop Mag]

Remember when some fruit company released that dumb notebook that didn't have any connectors and no optical drive? Seems so silly now..

Given the fugliness of it I would say they are competing against IBM not Apple

@pretol: Just because its a PC doesnt mean PC users have to like everyone that comes out, unlike fans of some fruits company.
This isnt even really competing with the MBA since its kind of thick. The only competitor for the MBA is the Voodoo, and until the refresh of the MBA, it annihilated the MBA. Theres a nice back and forth going on in that segment, but as far as im concerned, those are the only two contendors for large footprint thin laptops.
Anyways, this laptop is not worth the money. Im a PC user, and i would'nt buy this, especially with that shitty 1280x800 resolution. 1680x1050 or go home at that size.
Either way, they still managed to sneak in HDMI, VGA, and 2 more USB ports than the MBA. How many dongles does that equal?

I found an Asus laptop on Newegg with a P8600 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40 Ghz, 4GB DDR2 RAM, 320GB 5400-rpm HDD, 15.4" screen, NVidia GForce 9650 GT with 1GB of memory, that weighs only 6.5lbs, for $1250 right now.
That same exact laptop, but with a 14.1" screen, and weight of only 5.71lbs, costs only $1150 now. It's thickness is only 1.43"-1.46".
I don't get this thin-laptop mania...

@sfokevin: Plain, maybe. Poked gently and not struck full-force by the ugly stick.

@AZRoboto: It's the same as the fashion world.
The more worried the person is about the laptop's look, the more you know he/she don't really have a use for it... you know, it's just for show.
