RIM Already Says BlackBerry Storm Bug Fixes Are Coming Soon
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:59 AM on November 21, 2008
Why do companies ship products they know are mad buggy? Apple did it with the iPhone, RIM did it with the BlackBerry Storm, which locked up and crashed on me plenty during the review period, even after it was delayed precisely to make it less buggy. RIM, however, is at least admitting they screwed up off the bat (before it lands in most consumers' hands, even), promising a software update "within weeks." I hope that besides plugging holes and squashing bugs, they also shake off the lag and sluggishness I experienced to make the Storm feel a bit springier. (Kill the fade transitions!) Guess we'll see. @Iron Sheep:
As a Verizon customer that has been waiting to upgrade an LG Chocolate flip phone to a new smartphone for well over a year now, I am willing to forgive their haste in releasing the Storm.
Now, after seeing these reviews, I am still stuck at a crossroads... I either A) ignore the lag issues and hope for a fix and pray that I will be able to work through the slowdown of a button-click touchscreen; B) switch to AT&T for an iPhone (when everyone I call is on Verizon); or C) hold out for an HTC Touch Pro and live with WinMo.
Crap.

I hate the whole "ship now, fix later" attitude. At least RIM is admitting there are issues and working on a fix rather than just leave the thing as-is. If a comapny ships a buggy product, I expect frequent updates. It also seems that frequent software updates (fixes and features) are becoming the norm, even for products that are less buggy from the start.

Companies ship now and fix later because ship dates are guided by marketing droids and not the engineers.

yeah the lag issue I have seen in videos basically kills the whole phone. If I have to wait for everything it just pisses me off. Although there are transitions on the iPhone, they seem snappy and make it seem fast.

I think companies are doing that now so that they can come out with one killer ass update to get the consumers liking their company and atleast feel safe that even if the software/hardware messes up there's an update on the way and they're there for you.
=basically i think that they're doing that to give the consumer a sense of security.

"Why do companies ship products they know are mad buggy? "
I think you need to be in the cat-birds seat of having to launch a competitive mobile device with custom hardware and software every 18 months on budget in order for your company to be viable to appreciate the importance of hitting a launch date.
It would be great if developing handsets was a 100% procedural operation which insured 100% quality if followed, but its not.
Why? Because every new device has an element of invention. Especially Blackberrys and iPhones.
If the launch date is looming and the product is usable, then launch it - because fixes and refinements come much faster after the pressure of the launch date is gone.
Another reason - the average Gizmodo reader will rotate out his handset in 18 months anyway, get it out the door before its obsolete.
