RED Teases Nov 13th Announcement With Cryptic Renders, More Hyperbole
Posted by John Herrman at 9:24 PM on November 3, 2008
RED CEO Jim Jannard is either an incredible visionary or prone to serial exaggeration. Just yesterday, he deigned to visit the RED forums, promising that "[RED is] doing things we never thought possible... When we do post, it will be very obvious why we needed a bit more time to 'spill the beans'." As a teaser, he decided to spill two of those beans early, in the form of vague, zoomed-in renders of RED's new HIV-curing, hunger-ending, climate-stabilising übercamera.
Owners of any number of popular DSLRs will notice some familiar controls in these renders, but what does that mean? It seems obvious that Jannard's lovable breathlessness is for his new RED DSLR (or DSMC, I guess), and that his enthusiasm hasn't been diminished in light of the stunning video performance of Canon's 5D DSLR. RED certainly has a track record of innovation, but could Canon have beat them to the DSLR HD video punch? [RedUser via Crunchgear]

Yeah, you aim the camera at a scene and you imagine how you would want it and once you take a picture *poof* it changes it to your imagination. BTW this camera runs on rainbows and fairy dust.

Look! If you rearrange those letters correctly, you can make AC/DC! RED IS EITHER HIRING ANGUS YOUNG TO DESIGN A NEW GUITAR OR THEIR NEW DEVICE USES ELECTRICITY!
I am so psyched.

I wonder what kind of lens mount this will use, I doubt that any kind of proprietary mount would get them very far. Then again, if they make this in an M42 mount, and make it full frame, at a reasonable price, they could sell a bunch.

@nomayo: Big red button usually means REC, so I don't think it'd be a projector.
I'm guessing a DSLR w/ Video or prosumer video camera.

It looks like a projector...

Was the video performance of the Canon really that stunning? It was the lensing, not the video...

It's definitely going to be interesting to see what they come up with. Past a certain level, all pro SLRs are going to be interchangeable when it comes to features (besides shooting HD, etc) and image quality (all excellent) but what really makes a camera earn its keep is the interface. Nothing like missing a shot worth thousands of dollars because you were fumbling with the controls.

@buttersideup: Uh, no, it's the video. It's seriously awesome. The fact that you can use 150 lenses on it is a pretty sweet bonus that makes it all the mo' betta.

"Spill the beans"? That's like 'letting the cat out of the bag' isn't it? (Holy déjà vu, Batman!)

@Joseph: Looks like a Neo Geo controller! It's back baby, and this time costs only $2,000.

WOW! My sony HDV camera does not have ABCD either! This is great news!!! This is about as revolutionary as JKL on non-linear editors!

Meh. I don't want to see 3D renderings of products that are coming in the future. Here's a concept, how about actually showing an actual mass-produced product with a release date.

If I can take a guess, I would think ABCD would be presets which could make this camera great if it was smart enough to save lens data, allowing you to keep 4 presets for every lens you own.
If what we are seeing is just the navigation then I'm very interested in seeing how they laid the rest of it out. Looks awkward already.

This shows nothing. My Canon 40D has presets, and the jog dial could be for a DSLR or a HD vidcam or anything really. Unfortunately, only way I'd go with a Red DSLR is if they have an adapter than can somehow accept canon lenses.

@iluvhatemail: or focus presets, making shooting pro video possible with a DSLR.
