QVC Selling Dell Mini 9 for 'Only' $US70 Over List
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:45 AM on November 8, 2008
The suits might fire me for this...but I'm slashing the price on this lovely Dell Mini 9 laptop to $US529. Holy crap, I just blacked out. What did I just say? Did I just say $US529? I meant to say $US1,529! Hell, I meant to say $US10,529! Well no going back now, the Dell Mini 9 laptop is here on QVC for just $US529. These are great for kids, grandparents, baseball players...wait a second...I'm receiving word that you can actually customise this same system for $US449 on Dell.com. Well...I mean...then you'd have to...go online...series of youtubes...and stuff. So, uhh, I'd recommend all QVC fans buy the Dell Mini 9 from us, then go to Dell.com and pick up a second Dell Mini 9 for only $US449. That's two laptops for under $US1000 here on QVC. Damn, still got it! [Lilliputing]

but will the dell website give me a middle aged female model pawning their wares with a smile plastered on by botox and sheer fright?

Also, I wish someone would tell them that the thing doesn't have an 8GB hard drive.

The fact of the matter is, people with less that spectacular credit wont mind paying the extra 70$ for 5 payments and no credit check. Its just like financing it on a credit card, with no credit card. I do agree with Matt B though, they make it seem like you're getting a ludicrously good deal by inflating the MSRP. I got a 4GB flash drive on Buy the other day for just north of $10 shipped, and saw one on ShopNBC for 49.99 the next day.
The target demographic for these TV networks are older people and lazy older people. They don't want to shop around, that want to speak their order to a machine and sit at home to wait for it.

Very common QVC tactic! In fact if you research many of the items they offer, they OFTEN sell them for MORE than you can get it directly from the manufacturer. Sometimes it's a just few cents over (in example, research the Bose Wave radio they have) and its no big deal, but other times it can be a substantial amount! The fact that many people think they're always getting a deal on QVC is how they get away with it. I'm sorry to say it but, the majority of their customers are not all that "edumicated" if you know what I mean. They sell you crap at deep discounts, then when they bring something actually worth buying, it's usually marked up equally if not higher than what you could essentially get it anywhere else.

I'll never forget the time I came home to find that my roomate had ordered a Gateway from QVC without asking my advice (computer guy) he paid like $2,500 for a system you could configure on Dell for like $1,300. He was so impulsive, had we waited 2 hours for me to come home I wouldn't pointed out this horrendous deal.

This link shows that the pricing is indeed correct:

Apparently the deal includes a McAfee subscription, and the whole thing prices to the exact same price on dell.com.
I'm happy the kind of people that buy from QVC will be protected by some kind of software, because they are usually the ones installing cursor enhancers, codec packs and other crappy stuff that ends up helping spam me.

Throw in a vinyl lawn chair and a couple beer cozies and you got a deal.

@DucatiGuy: I'm sorry but I find it necessary to critique you. Though I do applaud your properly spelling and punctuation, I must note two things. First off, ALL retailers sell items at a higher cost than the manufacturer charges. They buy at wholesale, you buy at retail. Unless you're referring to MSRP, of course. Secondly, "if you know what I mean" is a phrase used when you're trying to imply something. You outright called people stupid. Please, English has far more subtleties than grammar.

Obviously, the QVC purchase comes with a cup of unidentified coffee and a red Christmas ornament.
Also, I think we can all agree that Cup of Unidentified Coffee would be a great name for a rock band.

Actually, if you check out Dell's EPP/employee pricing, the "standard cost" of a Dell Mini 9 has fluctuated from about 10 to 15% above retail, and the employee discount brings it down to the same price that anybody else would pay. They seem to have brought in line with current pricing, but the EPP costs are traditionally higher for the Mini 9 when anybody else would pay lower.

The funny thing is that the "retail value" on this Dell from QVC is supposedly $695
