Question of the Day: Which One of You Has the Fastest Internet Connection?
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:00 AM on November 8, 2008
Much like the typing speed question I asked over the summer, this question is designed to pit you head-to-head against one another to see who has the biggest e-wang (so to speak). All you need to do is follow this link to test your internet connection speed. The poll after the break is broken down to get a basic range, but make sure to include your exact figures in the comments.

@Askiba: Most of the really, really high speeds here are from people who either have blazingly fast work connections (usually because they work for a company that either needs to move huge amounts of data or is directly involved in telecommunications) or they are from academic institutions, where they may have nearly unlimited access to very-high-speed fiber optic connections.

@Askiba: Most of the broadband services in the US for homes are relatively low speed, less than 6mbps down. The high speeds many people are posting are because of the connection speeds at their workplaces (or schools). These places tend to have/need much faster connections and can afford the much higher cost. Most major ISP's have business solutions. Prices can go from several hundred a month up to many thousands a month.

In trying to answer the question I didn't want confusion by saying well a small percentage of residential connections are indeed faster and some business connection are much slower, like a T1 for instance or *wince* ISDN. Actually worked for a place just a few years ago still using 128k ISDN.

The test files it uses to test your download speed is inadequate and the fact that ALL the test servers are located in the You Arse of Aye leaves a lot to be desired to those on the other side of the globe.
I would suggest some other speedtest site, like speedtest.net.

I've supposedly got a 24 Meg UL / 2.5 Meg DL unlimited service through my phone line but when I do the test I get:
U 13,529
D 1,692
and when I tried a test in the UK (broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk) I get:
U 16,521
D 1,374.
I find these tests so unreliable but I guess that's more to do with my provider and the number of users on my local exchange, since the tests will be better or worse depending on the time of day. Even though I'm really close to our local exchange (about a quarter of a mile away) I think the wiring in my apartment is really old so that will have an effect.
Oh, and the other half is currently hammering LBP on the PS3 with her online chums... that might also impact the results.

but its not that bad really, my home country, one of the axis of evil countries, has government mandated internet, they block what they don't like, and keep what they like, like the situation in china, but they're much more open about it.
