Quantum of Solace Is the Perfect Bond Movie
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 3:00 AM on November 14, 2008
The latest Bond is the perfect Bond Movie. Yes. It is. In fact, Quantum of Solace is not only the perfect Bond movie, it's the best Bond movie ever, period. Even surpassing Casino Royale--and I mean both the Craig's one and the original Peter Sellers, David Niven, and Woody Allen's delirium--which to me surpassed Connery's best (I know, sacrilege). It has everything a Bond film must have and more: Cars, cocktails, airplanes, boats, cocktails, smart hot girls, evil baddies, slimy baddie sidekicks, cocktails, and gadgets. Yes, the new Bond has some really cool gadgets in it. I don't mean cheesy stupid mini-rockets firing from the exhaust pipe of an Aston Martin or laser watches that can cut through steel and french lingerie. I mean cool, believable technology that integrates in the movie transparently.
To start with, real multitouch makes a stellar appearance with a giant Microsoft-Surface-style table which Judi Dench--the head of MI6--and other agents use with ease, simultaneously. In fact, the user interface on the table--albeit adorned for the required Hollywood eye candy--actually makes sense and is extremely attractive, gesture includes. Everything on it is doable with current technology, even the part in which they place a dollar bill and it gets automatically scanned and identified.
There's also the huge video wall at M's office. Unlike the multitouch surface, this is a CGI effect. However, with enough money and the use of transparent OLED technology and gesture recognition, the video wall is also perfectly doable. In fact, I saw something similar in my visit to Philips Labs last August, although that transparent video wall--a simulation of a glass storefront--used projection rather than OLEDs.
Only a couple of technologies were exaggerated. One was Bond's mobile phone camera capabilities--with 007 taking pictures of faces with 3D depth of field information from a very long distance. The other was the speed of data transmission between the mobile phone and MI6's headquarters. However, you can perfectly imagine that all that may be real in the military world and just not available to consumers, specially looking at some of the latest camera and communications research.
But what really makes this movie is not the technology. Yes, it plays an important role: Bond gets geolocation information on the baddies, and he uses his camera to get some of their pics, which then are analysed and cross-referenced by MI6 databases. But none of it is a gimmick. There is no magic zippo lighter capable of launching kinetic rocket fire balls and save the day at the end of the movie. The technology in Quantum of Solace is realistic and it integrates naturally into the film, it flows with the plot.
What makes it the best Bond movie ever is what makes an action movie good. The script to start with. Serious, but also witty, and with the right amount of reality stretching. It even has an underlying social theme, which is interesting and relates to the current world's political climate. Marc Forster's direction makes you wish he directed Indiana Jones IV. His movie runs like clockwork, with the action scenes being masterfully choreographed and filmed, and painting a deeper, much more complex portrait of not only Bond, but also M, who gets a lot more presence in this one (and is Judy bloody Dench. I rest my case).
And then there is Bond himself. Daniel Craig really makes the movie work with his presence alone. He's a badass, but feels absolutely human. He has flair and a taste for luxury--wait until he arrives to Bolivia to see what I mean--but he gets gritty and dirty all the time. He could be a psychopath, but you can see that he has heart. He can seduce a women into bed like the best Connery would do, but you can actually see that he cares about her. You can feel that he is a hopeless romantic below the cold surface. A guy consumed by the need of vengeance and the contradiction of being betrayed by the love of his life. Yet, at the same time, he still loves her to the point of risking everything, even while she is dead.
And he likes cocktails.
Yes. Go. See it. Now.

This film was an utter disaster and a mistake by all concerned.
It should just be torn up and everyone start again from scratch.
It is badly edited, badly scripted and badly....aimed! It is a completely directionless, pretentious mess.
The sheer camp stupidity of the name should have been a warning, and unfortunately - it was!
Poor Dan Craig, he's *so* good, he deserves better than this rubbish, especially after the brilliance of Casino Royale.
1 star (out of 5), and thats mainly because of our man Craig, and (bows) Dame Judy.

@Mrrix32:
Have you ever _really_ watched some of the early Bond films? I mean, with a critical eye, and not rose-colored glasses? Back in the Connery days it was all just, "Hey, there's a building that looks like it could be some supervillain's headquarters. I'll just wander inside and thwart their plans or whatever." Casino Royale showed a clear path of deduction from Point A to Point Z. There's only one point in the entire movie where a clue is pointedly dumped in his lap (Vesper's phone), and even then he almost misses it. The early Bond practically had a guided tour with a companion plot book in comparison.

@nutbastard: Its like any other character that has had multiple creative hands working on him over the years. You look at the original books and the current Craig Bond is much closer to what Fleming described. The cartoonish aspect is something much more in the films. He is going to be something different to most people which you've seen over the years.
Its like Batman. For some Bale's Batman is definitive and some (though probably much, much fewer) are going to perfer West's take.

@article: What? saw it almost two weeks ago on the swedish premiere, it's got nowhere near the same good pacing as casino royale, and that's saying some as casino royale is about 1/3 of poker, if not more. It's got the "worlds most expensive" car chase, which was also underwhelming, and not a very memorable ending climax either. As a movie, it's not bad, but it's by far NOT the best Bond.

nothing more annoying than someone who needs to borrow a car, you offer yours, hand em the keys, they go out, come back 30 seconds later, 'uh, i dont know how to drive stick'. INSTANT LOSS OF MANLY RESPECT RIGHT THERE.
on a similar note, there are few things hotter than a girl who can drive stick, and do it well. in a truck. offroad. ok i just creamed my jeans brb.

@Kaiser-Machead's Cookie-Powered LEGO Machine: Except the Bourne movies had pretty much NOTHING to do with the books. The basic premise of Bourne himself and some of the titles and names were the same, that's pretty much it. Not that the movies weren't good, just that the fact that another Bourne book was released really should have no bearing on the movie franchise :)

See and to me, James Bond is supposed to be cartoonish. Or at least Comic-Bookish. He isn't supposed to be leaning towards Jason Bourne, he's supposed to be leaning towards, well, Austin Powers.

@pinball21: Craig is much closer to Bond then the other Bonds were.
I guess it depends on where you want to go back to. You go back to the books (which the new movies are doing) Craig pretty much is Bond. You go back to the movie Bond and yeah, he isn't much like Moore et al.

It is, as I had feared, more Jason Borne than James Bond. Still a good action flick, and a good movie, but not a good BOND movie.
Come on, Jesus, after your being a stickler for the classics on the new Indy movie I expected you to hate this one. Honestly, "the perfect Bond movie" statement is unjustifiable in my mind- and this is a guy whose favorite is Goldeneye (thanks, videogames). That doesn't make Goldeneye the best Bond movie- no, that distinction falls to From Russia with Love.
I've complained about it on here before, but I'll say it again- Bond is a generic American action hero now. That's all well and good, and he can run around playing Texas Hold 'Em all he wants, but it's not REALLY Bond.
He's been getting more and more American for years, and this reboot is more of a jump forward in the same direction. I hope the next entry in the series takes a much more classic and British turn for Bond- now THAT would be something to get excited about.

@Alchemistmerlin: From "The Power of One" where Craig plays a Nazi youth in South Africa going up against Stephen Dorf to "Layer Cake" where he plays a go between guy for drug deals to James Bond, Daniel Craig has nailed every role he has played. I have yet to see a performance by him that was sub par. Some movies may not have done all that great in the box office, "Golden Compass" (which I liked) and "Invasion", his ability to act still shined. I would have to agree that he is the best bond yet. Sean Connery is forever the man, but Craig nailed this part without error. Can not wait to see QoS this weekend.

According to TechCrunch's "multiple (if thin) reports," Apple may be working on a search engine in the interest of weaning themselves from Google's teet. Given that Apple defaults to Google search on Mac and iPhone versions of Safari, and given that Google is sort of competition now with Android, the rumors make sense...but given that Apple does not appear to be recruiting search programmers from other companies, and given that you need experienced programmers to build your engine, the rumors don't make sense. So I guess that all we can conclude is that there's nothing conclusive yet. [TechCrunch][www.techcrunch.com]

I appreciate the review from the tech side, but I have to say, it sounds more like real technology is just catching up to movie magic. If you go through the old movies, I'm sure a majority of it all could be "theoretically" possible now or in the next few years, aside from the REALLY off-the-wall stuff (anything Brosnan used). Video walls and touchscreen displays have been cinematic shenanigans for years.

I didn't read that whole post because I don't want to read the spoilers, but I do have to comment on how happy I am with the new direction the Bond films have taken with Daniel Craig in the lead role. I'd pretty much sworn off all things Bond when "Die Another Day" introduced the absurdity of an invisible car. This new direction really pleases me: more story, more intrigue, less gadgets. It's not that I don't like gadgets (and every Bond film should have at least one gee wiz gadget) but when they're so absurdly implausible they just spoil the movie.

@nutbastard: "See and to me, James Bond is supposed to be cartoonish."
Exactly. He's 'over' everything. Overstyled. Overdramatic. Oversexed. He's SUPPOSED to be shot at an infinite number of times without being hit. That's what makes Bond, Bond. I particularly think Casino Royale was a good movie, but not a good Bond movie. Craige is too.... dry. He's too robotic. He's an immature Bond. Bond had a taste for art and romance. What Connery did was show that Bond also ENJOYED it personally. Craig's Bond likes these things only because he HAS to in order to get the job done.
I can't agree that Craig is a better Bond than Connery. I also can't really judge until I've seen this iteration. Until then Connery-1 / Craig-0.

@nutbastard: My gf drives stick. All of her cars have been manual transmission. It was a lot of fun the last time we went car shopping. So many a$$hole salesmen talking down to her trying to get her to pick a car with an automatic because most of them didn't even have manuals on the lot. She threw it right back in their faces and dismiss them quite brutally. One guy tried and tried to push the automatic. She asked if he was going to show her a manual car. He said no and she said, "then you're useless to me." and walked away. He tried to pursue it and I just chuckled as she completely ignored him. I like watching her when she gets mad (so long as it's not at me!)

i totally agree about the review, QoS IS the best bond movie. Has an amazing plot, and not only that, it picks up were cassino royale stops, wonderfully. much like they did at bourne's trilogy, but it's BOND, and he is ON FIRE haha, gee that sounded kinda strange.
anyway, i think the next bond, will deff make up a small trilogy in the whole bond sotry, and if that goes on, man, now people will just love bond even more.

@Earthslide: Daniel Craig is not fit to polish Pierce Brosnan's shoes. Pierce Brosnan is James Bond. After that I can accept Connery, then Moore, maybe even Lazenby. After all of them, Craig slides in just after Dalton. Hell Peter Sellers was better than Craig. Craig's inaugural outing in Casino Royale was so bad it almost turned me off of the franchise entirely. This movie has to be better by default, simply because it couldn't get worse than the last one.

This is madness... have you seen the same film I did? What a BAD movie... Craig continues to be a thug, there's no REAL resolution at the end (stay tuned for Bond 23!), most of the action scenes are filmed in that horrible "hyperkinetic" style that makes you go "huh? what did just happened?" (this got really old if you've seen the Bourne movies), and the plot is just bad, bad, bad. Not to mention that the bad guy is an environmentalist (!??)... oooh, scary!
Watch "Sahara" for a much better take on "bad industrialists stealing water"! Come to think about it, there are some unnerving similarities between the two movies, starting with the fact that in both cases the bad guy is a French dude with a bad accent. Except that "Sahara" never took itself seriously, while "QoS" does.
And Daniel Craig does NOT have the sophistication and charisma required by the role... he's just sulking, angry, and expressionless.
It's sad to see that the studios are so desperate to keep the Bond franchise alive and make some extra cash on the back of the public. Be forewarned...this is probably the worst Bond ever - worse than anything you've ever seen in the series, even the lame "Casino Royale" of the '60s...
It used to be that the Bond films had great locations, wonderful stunts, beautiful women and impressive gadgetry. Not anymore. All we have now is a pumped-up dude who beats up people and tosses his dead friends in garbage bins. Sad!
Oh, and one more thing - the title song is an abomination. No, really! I defy anyone who disagrees to play it alongside one of Shirley Bassey's tracks, like "Goldfinger", Tom Jones' "Thunderball", or even A-ha's "Living Daylights"...
*edit* it looks like even Roger Ebert agrees with me... [rogerebert.suntimes.com]

Jesus,
I disagree. The plot was weak. The climax was...barley a climax. I didn't even realize it was a climax until....nothing happened after that. You are given bits and pieces of a bigger story during the movie, but none of that materializes - only a subplot, with meager setup gets resolved. You are left hanging. I realize that they are probably laying groundwork for the next movie, but I think it was done poorly, i.e. making you think that is what this movie was about. As an example, the opening "chase" had little relevance to the rest of the movie.
But it was still a good movie. Here is how I would rank them:
1. Casino Royale (sorry nutbasterd)
2. Goldeneye
3. Quantum of Solace

Hmf. Casino Royale went back to the original story in the book and kept close to it throughout (updated by 50 years or so). The original "Quantum of Solace" was a short story that appeared in For Your Eyes Only and had almost nothing to do with Bond.
The Bond movie franchise got way off the track starting with Moonraker and I was kind of hoping that they'd get back to basics from now on. (Not that there are that many original Bond stories left, but "The Hildebrande Rarity" is a good basis for a movie).
Oh well. Doesn't mean I won't go see it.

Oh yea,
you guys in the US get it on the 14th, right? I saw this when it came out in Asia on the 5th, and what a disappointment.
A Bourne wannabe run-of-the-mill action sequence with stupid fabricated buildings (the hotel) like what we've come to hate in "Die Another Day"(the ice castle).
The beginning of the movie was actually quite promising, I came in with elevated expectations after "Casino Royale", which set the standards back up after three previous trainwrecks. But from then on it went downhill, to freefall. Who the hell runs an international crime syndicate to sell water? Storyline is cheap, weak, and even Stephen Baldwin would think twice to star in this. There is no hint of class that Bond had represented. A Bond movie is a shared imagination of British intelligence, high-society elegance, quirky gadgets (although the invisible car was too much), exotic locations, action, and girls. I think I speak for many when I say that Bond only needs to be creative WITHIN this realm, and nothing more (or less, in the case of QoS).
Oh, and did I mention this is the first Bond movie that doesn't have the line "the name is Bond, James Bond"?

Not until he finds is "quantum of solace" (or find his peace with what happened with Vesper, if people still don't get the title). THEN he is able to move on and become the Bond the previous movie showed. One of the greatest random details I noticed on the second viewing was when he Bond was spelling out Greene's name. He states, "G-R-double E-N-E," and the search interface displays "G R W" before the W gets deleted and replaced with two Es.
Forster is one for detail, and it's very nice detail. The one critique I have for it is that it's pretty much the Harold Crick "interface" from Stranger Than Fiction. Which wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so damn recognizable.

The whole point of Casino Royale is that he wasn't really Bond James Bond until the very end of the movie. Everything else is what _made_ him Bond. Well , i don't think you are referring to Quantum of Solace then. Since the script was the weakest part of it all. What happened to it ?. I mean the film merely portrayed Bond as an instrument of rage going after whoever killed his love from Casino Royale. The resource in the desert - water - was the plot they started the movie on .Did the plot just evaporate?
and Cars ?---the only one i saw was an Aston Martin which bond ripped into pieces in the first few min of the movie. For people who have seen and grown with the Bond francise , i would suggest Barbara Brocoli to re-consider the killing machine image. It was the charm that Bond lived on - his women , his one liners and what not. They stripped off the " Bond .. james bond " Daniel Craig plays his part well , but as a completely different character .

You're complaining about the ACTION? Bond became an absurd, over the top action spectacle long ago. Which one was it where he jumped in a fighter jet and blew up an arms deal? Didn't we see Connery in a little attack helicopter? CR was a smart movie that had spy stuff AND action. I haven't seen QoS yet but I am expecting the same, and no stupid invisible cars. And the new character is much better than the old Bond too. He's FLAWED, which makes him INTERESTING. After I saw CR, old Bond was DEAD TO ME. They are like caricatures, and this is the real thing. I hope QoS carries on in the tradition of CR.

It bothers me when people say 'Bond is supposed to be this or that'... Bond is one of those characters that is supposed to change with the times. The fast cars, bikini-models, gadgets, booze, and creepy baddies are constants of course, but to think a 60's bond would work today? or an 80's bond in the 90's? Connery's gentleman in the swingin' 60's, Moore's alpha during the tough-guy 70's/80's era, .. all perfect for the moment. Brosnan looked the part and was a good smoothie, but didn't *bring* anything to Bond and so once the gloss of a new Bond with modern special effects wore off, we were left with the ick that was Die Another Day . Craig is a perfect fit for the grittier texture... and today, that's what works for the general audience. We want our escapism a touch more realistic, our heroes a bit more vulnerable (not to come careening out of a mushroom cloud in a refrigerator unscathed). Craig was great in the first one as the n00b Bond.. relying on muscle more than brains, being duped by the ladies, etc. Looking forward to seeing what he brings to this one

@netsaver: the point about this is that they went back to the first Bond book (Casino Royale) which was out of rights and could be re-made after the mess of the Niven nonsense and Craig wanted to use this return to base as a chance to also explain how the Bond we have been used to (Connery especially) developed into the insouciant, misogynist, cold-hearted and cold-blooded killer. Remember, at the start of Casino Royale Bond makes his first two kills to grant him the 'double 'o' status. This is a journey. He's made his first two kills, is young and cocky and gets burned by getting too close to Vesper and feeling betrayed. So now he's off for vengeance and clarity... can't spoil to for those who have not seen it. The journey is good, will take us into more familiar territory in due course I imagine. Sure, some of the ultra fast editing was for the ADD generation but as a building lock to explain the man we think we know, this is a god one. Those who have seen this will think, yeah, that kinda makes sense. Go see it.

@undefined: Saw this yesterday. If you like chase scenes, you will LOVE this movie. Starts in the middle of a car chase. Then five minutes later, a chase through the streets and rooftops in Italy. Then another car/motocycle chase. Then a boat chase. At this point, I said to myself "Jeezus, all they need is a dogfight now or something." And minutes later, airplane/helicopter chase. AS for the plot, shockingly convoluted, given how little time is actually spent on plot. Overall, kind of enjoyable. @vicsells: Actually, nearly true. I don't think this is the best Bond film ever at all. It's the most different Bond film ever, more an Action flick than a Bond flick.

@KingKorg: **Spoiler below**
AND what the heck was up with the endless exploding building??
They mention that the building runs off fuel cells in the scene beforehand.
Did you happen to notice all the large hydrogen canisters in each room?
Now yes, it's completely unrealistic, but makes for an awesome plot device.

Just saw it, semi-decent action movie BUT a dreadful, horrible, BOND movie. No real plot, way too short, camera action too fast in action scenes, not enough character development. FAIL as a BOND movie.

Quantum of Solace is a total piece of shit.
Most of the action scenes is shot in blurry-vision featuring shaky-cam, so you can't even see what's going on and the story is pretty lousy as well.
An action movie where the action comes off as a blury blob = fail.

I just saw this on Saturday, and I agree with what you say about the gadgets and action. But the story was really lacking. It was so underdeveloped, and made the action not as interesting. Especially since there were like 3 "bond kills" in the beginning that pretty much had no explanation. Eventually, it got interesting, but not enough. The biggest disappointment was that the villain's goal wasn't explained enough. Aren't Bond movie villains extremely clear about their plans. At least the viewer should know. And even what I understood seemed pretty unthreatening. Basically, it was not as good and well thought out as Casino Royale.
One thing that I loooooved about Quantum: the motion graphics (title sequence, titles of places, interface graphics within the movie). They were absolutely amazing and helped make the movie better. The title sequence by MK12 was really nice.

Saw this movie last night - created our own event - Quantum of Martinis - and even that couldn't help this movie. Complete waste of two hours. We thought about having a wee dram of martini for every chase scene but since the movie is pretty much one giant chase scene broken up by some random confusing dialogue that became moot.
Seriously. I want gadgets and hot chicks in my Bond movies. Otherwise - call it Bourne and be done with it.
Where do I get my money back?

what the hell was that beginning? the worst chase scene ever with the really quick cuts you didnt know what went where and why! And why oh why do they shake the camera? i can answer that my self! becuase they are f'n idiots! and why the tight frames? A cars wheel on the screen when the car crashes? and you only see the wheel! a 200 000 dollar scene budjet. only good thing about this movie was the girl. man she is gorgeous!

@N@tedog: i just found i couldn't suspend my disbelief long enough with the pre craig ones, especially the later ones (die another dayetc..)it may be a bit more "realisticy" (still unlikely, but less so) but if i can get into it more, then all the better for me!
