Philips Won't Sell Home Theatre Equipment in North America Anymore
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:52 AM on November 20, 2008
Back in April, Philips announced plans to hand over its television promotion, sales and manufacturing to Funai. Now the company has expanded those plans to what sounds like all of their home theatre products, including DVD players, Blu-ray players and surround sound equipment. Oh, you'll still see Philips DVD players for sure, but it won't really be Philips. So have a good time dropping that little factoid to your favourite, know-it-all salesperson next time they gush about the Philips brand name. [NYT]

@undefined: @FrankenPC:
If it is loud and hotter than hell, something is wrong with your PS3.
Mine gets a little toasty which can be attributed to the fans doing their jobs, but is silent as a peaceful winter morning.

It's hot but mine isn't loud...
I also got mine for $300 unused but second hand (person got it as a gift and didn't want it) so I got a sweet deal.

Philips always was a trash brand. They haven't made their own shit for years. They have been grabbing OEM panels/tubes from LG for a while.

That's a shame. I've got a Philips DVD player that has a USB port in the front. Simply hook up any USB storage device and it will play the majority of Windows media files like mp3, wma, wmv, avi (Divx and Xvid), and .divx files. Best $50 I've ever spent... on electronics.

I can hear the Israeli electronic stores salesmen now... "Funai? No-no-no-no-no-no, it's Sony guts.."

@FrankenPC:
Wow...mine turns on too! I just took the doors off my cabinet because I came home from work and I could SMELL my ps3! And I blamed it on my cat and\or my wife...
Although, mine is not loud at all, near silent really. Especially compared to my xbox.

@dc-united: It's loud. It's get's hotter than hell. It's a power hog. Oh, and it has a bizarre habit of turning on unexpectedly which can have really bad consequences if you have one enclosed in a cabinet.
But, yeah, for the money you get an excellent HDMI 1.3 capable BluRay player and Some pretty damn good games.
FYI: Don't flame me. I own one.

@jdbaile3: It probably is for most people, since you get the latest spec player and you get a game system thrown in.
For some folks (like me) it isn't quite what I need to fit into my home theater for a variety of reasons.

Philips owns Magnavox. So we will still see Philips products under the Magnavox brand.

So if I am gonna get a blu ray player, is the PS3 still the best way to go? Id rather spend under $300 if possible.

@Wilcry: A guy at my work had his PS3 bricked by a firmware update. Also, will it allow HDMI for video and SPDIF for audio separately?

It's not the same thing man. I Liked Philips since I still in Brazi. They have a really cool Design and make a excelent products. It's a shame they had to get ou of the market here.

@jdbaile3: If you get a blu ray player make sure it is capable of firmware updates. This is what made the PS3 so highly rated.

I spent 2 years selling high end HT products at a certain big box store, and I dont think that I once ever talked about the "Philips brand name". To be honest its good that they are leaving the market, yes, they did make the first consumer plasma and all of that, but as of late, their products have really sucked. I cant tell you how many philips store displays we had fail, and dont get me started on their POS HTiB systems, I don't think that a day passed that I didn't get a phone call from a customer asking for help. I think that the only reason that people bought their stuff was they would walk down the isle, see that Philip and "unknown asian brand X" were priced equally as cheap, and having heard of philips they would pick it. And as for TV's, Im sure someone here will defend it, but Ambilight was the stupidest thing ever. Made the TV thicker, heavier, and in general was just pointless.

@jdbaile3: Yes the PS3 does. My amp only has optical, and I dont wanna upgrade, so I'm just bitstreaming for now through it. :(

@[x7productions]: Yeah, I have the original emotion engine 60 as well. I think the touch sensitive on button is SO sensitive that it can trigger itself on occasion. When I leave on vacation, I pull the power plug.

@ZombieRace: True, if I'm just playing a BluRay and the cabinet is open it's pretty quiet. The Xbox is WAY louder.

Actually a factoid is something that's not true, or hasn't been proven true.

Good gravy, why do so many maps of North America include the U.S. states and Canadian provinces and territories, but not demarcate Mexican states?

@jdbaile3: Not really. We're starting to see standalone players that are more full featured than the PS3, with load times just as fast as the PS3, and cheaper than the PS3.
It's also going to depend upon your audio system. If it doesn't accept PCM audio via HDMI, but you do have multi-channel inputs; you'd want a blu-ray player that decodes HD audio and has multi-channel outputs. If you have a really nice receiver with HDMI, you'd want a blu-ray player that can bitstream the HD audio to your receiver and let it do the decoding vs. the PS3 which can not bit stream hd audio.

a brand is only who slaps the plastic cover on the OEM components...
Sony gets their LCD TV panels from Sharp, LG, and Samsung...they buy parts and pieces from other manufactures in pre-assembled bits...even buy the plastic case from another supplier.
The final assembly and boxing happens at Sony (but doesnt necessarily have to)

"Oh, you'll still see Philips DVD players for sure, but it won't really be Philips"
Many of their products were not Philips anyway. I cant remember the detail of the original story, but Funai made virtually every Philips VCR over the past few years and a lot of other products were/are manufactured by third parties!!
It may come a s a shock (gasp!!!) to may, but a lot of even the biggest brands still out source! A few years ago, at the peak of CRT, a majority of the products sold in the UK came from one factory in Turkey, including those from major Japanese brands!
