Peek Handheld Can Now View Images, Text Unlimitedly
Posted by Elaine Chow at 1:15 PM on November 19, 2008
The Peek handheld, recently named the Time's best gadget of 2008, has now gotten even better with two added features. While we knew unlimited text messaging was already coming to the device, it's a pleasant surprise to find out it can now view images too. Peek will show .JPG, .GIF, .PNG and .BMP file formats when you click the "View Image" option. Considering its price drop to $US80, this little gadget's becoming a better deal day by day. [

I still don't get it... who needs all these features but not a phone?
Why wouldn't you just get a email capable phone?

Does it even support .pdf or .doc? If it had a decent internet browser and Wi-Fi it MIGHT be worth $80.

I think its the Sidekick market. Txt-ing is the party call of the young. They can txt all the time, calling and talking is just a waste o time..
They dont need WiFi or Internet since they rely on others for all their information..

@undefined: Wondering if I should get this for the wife. She's awful with checking email... and not gadget savvy enough to do a smartphone. (And no Pdditty, we will not buy an iphone [even thought I do want a MacBook now])

and than maybe one day they will add a phone to it and it would become the all in one gadget we have been waiting for?? wtf? if they start adding a bunch of extras to this device it kind of defeats the purpose why they made this thing in the 1st place.

@camron9989:
There is no point in such a thing. There are plenty of devices that do that - its not about data, just email convenience. Dont make it a phone.

Peek could already open Jpeg attachments since it launched. What they added in this update was GIF, BMP, and PNG support. Who the hell sends non-Jpeg images in an email, anyway?
Unlimited texting is a pretty cool addition though, especially at no extra cost, I'm not sure how they snuck that one past T-Mobile.

I don't get this. Just get a BlackBerry. Remember before everyone had a computer in the home, the vast majority of people didn't go and buy a device that did half of what a computer could do...they either bought a computer or went without. Eventually computers became so cheap and popular that people started to buy them and learn how to use them.
The same thing is happening with smartphones, the prices are getting lower so more people will buy them and learn how to use them...

@anti-hello-kitty: Clearly you have forgotten the Commodore 64, the Brother Word Processors, and other intermediary steps that moved us towards the modern computer.
This is a simple device to do a few basic things on the cheap. It might fly in the market like the c-64; it might fall on its face like CueCat, but most likely it'll gain a few solid adherents, sell modestly, but eventually be outdated by more widespread and eventually cheap solutions like WebTV-later-MSNTV.
