Peek Email-only Handheld Adds Unlimited Text Messaging
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:59 AM on November 4, 2008
Peek, the feature-sparse, email-only handheld will be adding unlimited text messaging to its service within the next few weeks. This will be done by taking advantage of the fact that most mobile phones can receive text messages that have been emailed and send text messages to email addresses. Sure, it isn't an elegant solution but it's a clever workaround and it gets the job done. What more could you expect from the guys that somehow garnered enough votes to be considered the best gadget of 2008? [Alley Insider]

I was pretty interested in this myself until I read the fine print on their site and found out that it only supports 3 email addresses. I guess it's not unreasonable to consolidate mine more but I'd expect at least 5 for what they're charging if not unlimited.

At first this looked like a fine/great idea. But then I saw it is 80$ for the item and 20$ for the service. Perhaps it can be used instead of pagers? I don't know though, most places that use them only want one way communication.

Wasn't there some sort of phone service that let you do pretty much the same thing? Like sending an e-mail to someone's phone via SMS?

...or you could add about the same amount of $$ onto your existing plan and go crackberry/iphone/smartphone.
and carry one device instead of this thing + a cell phone.
thinking about this makes my head hurt.
WHY???

I love it, it's cute an simple. But... Cell phone probably 30-40 bucks a month cheap. Then the peek, add $20. So... you're already at $60 for peek plus phone. Isn't the minimum iphone plan $60 or something?

Yes, I'm pretty sure they made sent out a chain letter on facebook claiming that if they don't give this device a 10 rating, the owner of fb will shut the site down. College students have a lot of time while they're in class "taking notes" lol.

@Michael Leung: MetroPCs phones can do that, and they can receive e-mail's sent to their number.

it's a cute idea, but i'm in with a blackberry, 600 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, insurance, internet, texting and email (and hopefully, tethering and/or navi the next time i re-up my contract) for $27 a month. so, the peek would be a lot less bang for only a little less buck.
but i'm sure there's someone out there who only texts and doesn't make phone calls, and this would be a sweet money saver for that person.

Wait a sec, if a Peek user texts a cell phone user via email wouldnt this feature already been enabled? Why is Peek acting like they're adding something that was never there?

@pdditty: It just makes it easier rather than having to remember each carrier's email-to-SMS gateway.
Instead of @vtext.com, @txt.att.net, and so on, you email the number to another email address that can determine (or, well, tries to determine) the carrier for you so you don't have to remember the SMS gateways.
But luckily for me I only have two to remember for the two monopolized carriers where I live.

this is exactly what i do with my iphone. i send my texts through my yahoo email account because yahoo has push email and the "texts" come straight to me. and it's free.

@pdditty: it's called getting, erm, friendly with sprint's customer retention and "customer services escalation" teams.
that, and having a monster-sized family plan, so even with the crazy discounts per line, sprint is still making good money on the whole plan.
although it requires re-inking my contract waaaaay more often than every 2 years. so if i want to get a contract subsidy on a new phone (like, say, when the bold is released on sprint), it's more likely than not gonna be no dice for me.
customer retention will do anything to get you to re-ink. they'll probably vote for your choice of presidential candidate, and arrange for hookers to pick you up at the airport the next time you fly to a place where prostitution is legal, if you give them an ultimatum, and know how to talk to them.
