Oxygen Tank Lamp Is Sure to Make Loved Ones Smile
Posted by Mark Wilson at 2:15 AM on November 20, 2008
I can't speak for everyone here, but most of us have 3, 4 or 5 industrial-sized oxygen tanks just rolling around, taking up precious space in our homes. Well here's a tip that'll put Martha Stewart's upcoming book Oxygen Tank Decorating Made Easy straight to the bottom of the charts. Just stick a lampshade on the thing, run some wiring through the base and presto—you have a cute lamp. If, of course, you already used up all of your oxygen tanks during our Halloween decorating extravaganza special from last month, this lamp is still available for an undisclosed price. DIY hint... Make sure tank is fully empty prior to drilling for electrical wire routing or light will be... intense but short lived.

They need to wire a potentiometer into the valve assembly, you'd get a pretty strange/cool dimmer mechanism that way

Actually, the coolest thing I've seen made out of old compressed gas tanks are deep ringing bells. There's a guy @ Saturday Market in Portland that sells them.

I can do this right after I get myself and my friend Jack out of this room we were locked into by some bad guys after I was sent here by Pete. All I need is something large with wheels to attach this cylinder to, and my knife.

For the lamp to make your family smile, a more effective tank would be a nitrous oxide tank. Let's just hope that Jimmy doesn't decided to become a dentist.

I thought gas cylinders were supposed to follow a color code (green for oxygen, red for acetylene, orange for helium, etc.) but apparently that's not required by law in the U.S.

Yeah, well you'd have to fill it with some Nitrous oxide and stick a time released mechanism on the valve, to
make people actually happy about it.

Aren't gas tanks color coded? Oxygen tanks are green. CO2, gray etc. I think red is for mixed gasses

Well, that bright orange tank is not typically an oxygen tank. Oxygen tanks are usually green, although colors do vary by the manufacturer. Thus for safety reasons, you must check the labels.
However, real tanks are heavy and can be tipped over, thus should have an attachment to something stable like a bench or wall. And you definitely do not want to tip one over and break the valve off.

Electric wiring right next to an oxygen tank. What could possibly go wrong?
