Opera for iPhone Ready To Go, If Not For Apple's App Store Policies
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 2:40 AM on November 1, 2008
Not surprising news, this, but sad nonetheless. According to Opera CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, an iPhone version of its popular mobile browser is developed and ready to go, but will likely never see the light of day due to Apple's infamous App Store policies, barring apps that compete with the phone's default features--here, Mobile Safari. Personally I find Safari to be pretty solid, but for those who find it crashy, an alternative would come in handy, and of course, competition is usually a good thing in situations like this. Sigh. Far out
Sick of shelling out money for a phone that cant do anything
no gps?
no copy and paste?
everything half decent just gets blocked.
nearly 1K for a phone thats not even half as good as a touch pro.
great

This is why I refuse to buy Apple products. I refuse to support a company that feels they have to micro-manage what their customers do, and how they do it.
Windows Mobile might not be perfect (lol, might?), but at least I can take a poorly-programmed application and crash it on my phone if that's what I really want to do.

Apple doesn't like competition. I love my iPhone but IMO Safari sucks, I want either Firefox or Opera instead but umm we don't get that choice.
The thing is a lot of people really support Apple for being so tight with their software and that's why they get away with it, however that very mentality will kill them.

It's not as if you have to buy Safari. It only benefits them by allowing such apps. Maybe I really want an Iphone, but hate Safari so much that I can't bring myself to do it. Something like this would make me want it again.
I can understand now allowing things that compete with itunes, but this is dumb.

I still don't understand why Apple doesn't treat OS X "lite" like it does the full desktop version. Sure, lots of shit can go wrong with certain apps, but I think it's safe to say that if an app causes problems, sensible users can just delete them/restore the iPod/iPhone.
Bottom line: They'd still get fucking money for the hardware. What gives?

@getz76: That's what I was thinking. Unlike Macs, the iPhone and iPod touch are poised to be very ubiquitous pieces of kit, thus their browsers would be. Not allowing Opera/FFM/Cydia on the phone or iPod would be pretty monopolistic, and in a way, even worse than Microsoft, since Microsoft limited how people could develop the browser, whereas this simply doesn't allow it at all.

I would love for opera or skyfire to get onto the iPhone but if apple doesn't want others to give it's userbase an amazing experience then why can't apple just make the Safari browser on equal of better than it's competition?

The general masses could care less though. People on here can rave about OSX, etc, but the average joe just wants it because it's pretty and all their friends have one. So it'll continue to sell like hotcakes and lock-in even more people. Don't expect a change in policy anytime soon.

Yeah, I loved it when the EU fined Microsoft for being a monopolist but I really want them to do this for Apple like RIGHT FUCKING NOW! Apple is full of sissies! They're like: "Somebody is making a better thing than us, giving users what they want, like Copy and Paste. Oh noes! We must fucking shut them down with a ton of rules that ruin creativity!" This is why the fuck people still hack their iPhone. Corporate monopolist dick benders and ball kickers. Yeah!!! Apple can suck my cock. Lately I've been thinking whether to buy an iPhone 3G, and reasons not to fucking do it are starting to weigh more than the ones that support the possibility of a choice of iPhone. One thing I don't fucking like is to be forced to use something I don't think is good enough for me, like in this case. So I think I might end up buying a phone with Windows Mobile, just because you are free to install whatever shit you want on it, unlike the holy, Jesus Phone... Jeeezus. I can't believe this.

I wouldn't be too quick to fault Apple. Better to have a stable phone than to allow anything and everything. Apple has a lot invested in the iPhone. If you want Opera you can always use another product as your mobile appliance. Of course 9 million people have decided on the iPhone and with little competition out there, it is likely that Apple will have its say for some time to come. A while ago I wrote about Apple's position on the iPhone, and its 1.0 and 2.0 implementation in a post entitled, Was Steve Jobs Right with iPhone 1.0, which you can read at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com/2008/08/06/was-steve-jobs-right-with-iphone-...10/ John
