NXE Launches With Relative Smoothness
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:47 PM on November 19, 2008
Reports from the front lines regarding the Xbox 360's 'New Xbox Experience' update are just coming in, and so far, so good. We've heard that updates are taking as little as five minutes (including download and installation), which isn't bad at all. The only technical glitch we've heard about is that Netflix device activation went down for a bit, but it seems to be working now. Share your own experience in the comments and let us know if your system bricked or something so we can all have a good laugh. Also, be sure to check:

it took an hour to download and install.
why can't i change it to start at "my xbox" intead of "spotlight"
because microsoft wants me to look at their crappy ads.
thats it! i am canceling my gold subscription. it's as bad as foxtel, charging me to look at ads they are paid to put up. double money going to microsoft!

The only negative thing I've encountered so far had to do with the sound of the car engines in PGR4 when I had it installed to the hard drive. For a while everything was fine, but then the car engine sounds developed a really nasty static noise. After I uninstalled it from the hard drive and ran it from the stand drive again, everything was back to normal. Strange but true.

No problems here (UK) although there's no mention of Netflix which I assume is US only. Took 5-6mins to install.
I think I preferred the old UI, perhaps this needs time to grow on you.

I quite haven't gotten use to it yet, but i think its ok. Seems more complicated to maneuver. I like the added portion with the xbox button menu system, where it takes you to everything you basically need to get to, like your games with quick launch, music, videos and etc.
Also been getting some errors when browsing the online categories.

Sooo... they make it look like a Wii... but do nothing to improve the media functionality... c'mon MSFT... if you want to make the XBOX the media hub for the house, spend a little less time making it look like a Wii and a little more time making it easier to browse my thousands of mp3's and hundreds of videos. Other than that, so far I like my Wii 360.

I was able to download and install in less than 5 minutes on a wireless connection. Very fast and it put the ps3 to shame considering that the ps3 only adds 1 or 2 items if anything and it takes 30 minutes. Was only able to play with it for a bit, create an avatar & activate Netflix only to find out that Sony Pictures gimped about 50 movies in my Instant Q. Can't wait to go home and install a game and explore all the new content. Woot Microsoft.

@thaJack: Yes, you still need the disc and it has to be in the system. The system will still use the disc sometimes but having it load the information from the HD instead of the disc theoretically will shorten load times and will definitely put less stress on the DVD drive.

@Daiko: This is actually a good thing for me. I have an hdmi going to my tv and optical audio going to my receiver. Unlike the PS3, the 360 doesn't offer the option to turn on/off sound over HDMI or optical. Maybe if they added this option in the patch, it would serve more people.

I installed it this morning before class and let me tell you, it is a real hum-dinger. The avatars are a bit akward, they all seem a little weird. Just the facial shape in general.
Netflix installation was so smooth. I logged on to my accound, put in the activation code, and instantly I was able to watch movies from my queue. I have a 10mbps internet connection, but it has never run above 5.5mbps and was getting 4 bars for video quality. It looks great. I watched some Warren Miller to see the contrast and there is very little pixelation. I would compare it to watching a burned dvd that is compressed from a dual layer to a single layer disc.
I had about 10 min to play with it and overall I loved it. I'm sure there is a lot more to learn and I want to see what types of themes are available that use the NXE format. It seems extremely customizable. Honestly, Microsoft has done a great job in my opinion. Netflix was an amazing grab.

I downloaded it last night and all was ok.
When I tried it this morning.. not so much. First problem was that it didn't log me into live when it started my profile. Then when I logged into live it kicked me completely out of my profile. I logged into my profile again and it was ok. That was until I went into Marketplace. It kept giving me the standard error when it can't get information from Live and it wasn't giving me any of the new stuff when I tried I went in directly to the New Arrival section. If I went to the normal section the new stuff would show up there. When I tried to get the trial for the new Arcade game through the New Arrivals section it said it was no longer available. But when I went through the All Games route it was available and I downloaded it.
I haven't tried it since this morning, so I don't know if those issues are gone. Probably.. I'm guessing just an overload of people this morning causing hickups in Live..

@I freebase cocaine for a living: I think it's a play off their own Media Center Crossbow interface with a sprinkling of iPod Coverflow, the latter I'm a little bored with.
The only issue I had so far with it was trying to figure out how to change Themes, which is actually a better location for it, under your profile settings. There could also be more appearance options for your avatar, I couldn't make mine fat enough so I'll have to continue to loose weight to match it...also as evil as Wii Fit. :(

Updated this morning, took less than 5 minutes to download and install. No issues so far. The download took me 5 minutes. The Netflix activation failed the first time but succeeded the second time (when I chose the option to get a new activation code). There was no audio on the Netflix movies at first (video was fine), but I rebooted the Xbox 360, unplugged the HDMI cable and plugged it back in, and turned the TV off and on, and the audio via Netflix began to work properly. The Netflix tech told me that sometimes, due to the DRM, the handshake via the HDMI cable doesn't work properly, so you have to unplug it and plug it back in.

I downloaded and installed the NXE update this morning and was surprised at how quick and glitch-free the process was. Thirty minutes was about all the time I had to play around with it, but that was enough time to set up m Mii, errr, avatar and toy with Netflix. The avatar setup was a breeze. There was a slight hiccup the first time I tried to get the Netflix streamer to download, but the second attempt did the trick. I fired up the first episode of "30 Rock" to see how it looked and I'll be damned if it didn't come down in HD. Overall I am very impressed with the update and am thrilled to be able to watch Netflix streaming content on my TV without having to buy any additional hardware.

Once I ran a super long cable from the 3rd floor to my living room to hard wire my 360 - it was very fast. (My linksys 310n router and my 360 on wireless do not get along.) I should probably remove the "clothesline" tho and pick up some powerline adapters...
I am really liking the new interface, but there is a learning curve for sure. Apart from the hard drive install option my fav thing is having a link to the downloadable content for your current game on the tab showing the game - uber convenient. There was all kinds of dl content for Tales of Vesperia that I did not even know existed.

I suppose the new interface looks pretty, but I'm not really sur eit was needed. Honestly, I can't make use of most the new features. My DSL is 768k, so it'd be impossible for me to stream netflix at that speed, I have a 10gig hard drive, so I can't really copy my games onto that. Well, maybe one at a time since I have around 7 gigs free, but I'd need to uninstall the existing one every time I want to play a new game and that seems like a bit of a hassle.
Overall, it seems nice, but I'mn nto overly excited about it because it seems like I can't use any of the new features.
