Nintendo DSi Blocks Pirated Flash Cards
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 5:35 AM on November 1, 2008
We pretty much figured that Nintendo had another reason for releasing the DSi other than just wanting to give us a prettier system like, say, wanting to stop rampant global piracy on the DS. Now that the DSi is out in Japan, the public has tested all of the flash card piracy devices and found the results to be very, very bad. None of them work.
R4 - Failed
EZ Flash V - Failed
CycloDS - Failed
G6 DS Real - Failed
M3 DS Real - Failed
Supercard DS One - Failed
iTouch DS - Failed
FCard - Failed
NCard - Failed
M3 DS Simply - Failed
U2DS - Failed
It's possible that there's a card not currently on that list, but from our quick glance, all the big boys in DS piracy are covered. [GBA Temp via GoNintendo]

EDGE is not on the list but I think it might not also work since it's almost the same with CycloDS.

It's a shame Nintendo have had to go with such a blunt measure on this. Homebrew is not all about piracy at all - many applications fulfil needs and desires of DS owners that Nintendo fails to meet. I own a Cyclo DS Evolution, and I use the paint program Colors on it. It means I have a small digital sketchpad I can take with me all the time, rather than an otherwise bulky paper one with assorted pens or pencils. I understand the piracy problem but surely there must be a more sophisticated and elegant answer to it than this.

Hey could we get a "DS Homebrew" post akin to the recent Wii Homebrew one? I, for one, would LOVES IT!

that's fine, i'm fully expecting there to be an SD card hack to play games directly from that

@Scaramanga: Well actually in the GBA's case flashcarts run fine on all 3 iterations.

If it had been released in the states, or europe, the card-fix would be out already... But surely next week someone will take care of this...
Thank god Jack Sparrow for PSP hacks always ready just two days after realease...

expected, same thing happened when the DSi was released. Every new version tries to stop piracy, same goes for the PSP, Gameboy advanced, etc.

Nobody believes you. How about "I own a Cyclo DS Evolution, and I use the paint program Colors on it, and also like to pirate games because it's easy and it's a recession, ya know?"

@f0rge: Pretty much this.
I also fully expected none of the cards to work to start with. Someone will find a way to either re-use the old ones thru a SD-hack or combo the 2.
It may help combat piracy for now. The SD-slot is gonna be the major downfall. If a 12 year old only has to move some files to a memory card rather than buy $40-100 worth of extra hardware, its allll over.

Their biggest mistake was putting a compact flash slot on the device itself. Now pirates have to rely on each other to get their pirate stuff working as opposed to a company that develops and keeps the pirate stuff up to date.
But as the PSP will show you, the pirates are good at what they do.

@Derry Quinn:
I have an R4. I'd be lying if I said I didn't download a few games here and there as a try before buying deal because hey 30-40 bucks a pop for what could very well be a piece of shit hurts the wallet. I know that piracy looks attractive right now but will eventually hurt the game industry and lead to less games. I also know people rely on this money to live and especially smaller game studios who need sales figures to secure investors or whatever.
But can you guess what my most used apps/games are on the R4? Not any games. I use Moonshell for reading ebooks 90% of the time I turn on my DS. The other 10% is split between wasting time on Animanatee, Colors, a homebrew crossword game, DSOrganize, DSFTP, DSVNC, etc.
There are tons of excellent homebrew titles out there. It's not like the PSP where the homebrew scene is difficult to locate. DS homebrew is thriving and some releases are excellent. Some of the homebrew games are better than commercial releases.
I know everyone will say 'yea yea, you pirate stop trying to justify your filthy piracy' but the stuff above is the truth and I hate to see legit and very useful homebrew threatened because of piracy. There is no way around it though since the key to making homebrew work is the same key used to open the piracy door.

well I'll just stick to my big old phat DS till the next generation. Colors! and DScratch are too good to pass, basically they're the only reason I haven't yet sold the bulky monster already.
So I suggest that Nintendo, given its pretty retarded hardware choices, stop this nonsense. Colors! even got tutorial articles on highly respected art magazines like ImagineFX, and Nintendo thinks I will stop drawing just so I can get a 0.3 megapixel camera? Dream on...

If the CycloDS failed, don't expect anything other card not mentioned there to work either. Even the acekard...
I'm predicting actually that it's going to take a PSP approach of hacking the DS through the firmware since it has that sweet SD card ready to be raped like the Wii.

DSReader. That alone would justify the purchase of a DS. You can darn well forget the DSi if there is not DSReader. (DSReader is an ebook reader for text files for the uninformed.)

@Nintenboy01: Not true. The original CF Supercard will not work with the Gameboy Micro, even though it works with the GBA and GBASP.
