I just watched Bond and caught the new Star Trek trailer, which was conveniently on YouTube when I got home for repeat viewing and "Woo! Woo!" action. [YouTube]

OMG Awesome, I've been a Star Trek fan since TNG and love everything Trek (Though Nemesis & The Final Frontier pushed it) and I'm a big fan of J.J.'s work. I cant wait till Wednesday night to see Bond even more, I have Gold Class tix, sweeeet.

Other than Leonard Nimoy, who's the only other actor to appear in both Star Trek the motion Picture and the new Star Trek movie?
Look at IMDB. Hint: how you doohan

Thanks, BLam! This will hold me until the trailer makes it to the web site in a few days.
I actually considered watching 007 just because of the ST trailer, although I heard 007 itself is pretty good.

I literally facepalmed during the Star Trek preview.
Also, let Craig finish his five films as Bond directed by Doug Liman fans and then knock off the generic action and get back to basics. Get back to what makes Bond, Bond- and make him British again, not the generic American action hero we have now, who runs around blowing stuff up, playing Texas Hold 'Em, and happens to have a British accent, but the classic Bond character.
Forget the silly action scenes and ridiculous special effects and focus on a story and character development. Set the first post-Craig film in the 60s, put Bond back in the DB5 and make a film that people won't throw away and forget in ten years.

I just saw Bond as well, which was fantastic. This trailer I also liked very much, the fact that it was followed immediately by the Watchmen trailer caused my pants to swell. Then the Bond movie opened with an Aston Martin mountainous car chase and my wife leaned over to me and whispered "don't mess yourself".

Just came back from QoS and an intense round of StarCraft with my friends and....after having seen that this evening, I'm not sure how I feel about the Star Trek movie anymore. This could be either really really awesome or overdone technology, like The Hulk (the Internet is a visual space with flying pages you can search...really???). Anyone else's thoughts on this? Someone convince me one way or another.

Sigh....seriously, wtf was that? Not a single thing in that trailer showed anything that made me think Star Trek (except the vulcan ears). Atrocious...simply atrocious. I never had any hope for that movie but now it has just been confirmed that it's going to be any but redeemable.

@DigitalSciGuy: Well, regarding "The Incredible Hulk", those flying pages were just effects to tell the audience that the NSA, er, I mean S.H.I.E.L.D. is scanning all Internet traffic. You took it too literally.
Regarding Star Trek, I'm pretty psyched. I don't consider myself "old guard" as I was born around when the original series started, but did become a fan with TNG. I watched all other ST series and movies and my opinions on those are mixed and too long to describe. I also have mixed opinions about J.J. Abrams but I have a feeling he will get what this franchise needs...new fans.
I can't wait.

I guarantee you that Star Trek going to suck. It's written and directed by J.J. Abrams...the man partially responsible for ruining Mission Impossible 3 with the atrocious screenplay and direction...and that stupid "Cloverfield" movie.......oh, and that little soap opera set on a deserted island called "Lost."
I can almost see this movie with lots of stupid long unneeded dialogues...and possibly crying.

@majortom1029: If that's the case, why make another shitty one?
IMO, Star Trek doesn't need (they may want, but that's another story) to appeal to the masses...the Trekkers/Trekkies take care of that with the box office and convention sales. But when you put together a movie that looks more like Dawson's Creek meets Babylon 5 than a Star Trek movie...well, you basically came up with a recipe to create a shit-tastic product. But how is this any different than the majority of movies that have come out over the past X years? What was the last GREAT sci-fi film? I can't remember. Nominees?

Wish I would of gotten to see this in the theater (and that new watchmen trailer) I either got there too late (seems like we just missed a few trailers and stuff like that is usually closer to the movie anyways) or my local theater stuck it on something else, though I couldn't imagine what or why. This isn't Star Trek. It's just typical Hollywood boring actin and more action sequence. It's just Transformers in space. Non stop eye candy. Eye candy is used when there is no story. Listen to the music in the trailer. It's tempo driven for action. U can easily replace the characters with Anakin, ObiWan, etc, and you'll have a Star Wars/Transformers type movie. Looks pretty boring to me. Too bad they ruined it.
Clearly Paramount wants to make ST a wide audience movie such as Spiderman, Transformers, etc. The only way to do that is to rip out the soul of Trek and replace it with action sequences. That, they've done a pretty good job doing. This isn't ST, it's just a formula fx movie and the Kirk/Spock/McCoy, etc actors are merely the bait to get the original fans in the movie theater. Once in, they will show us action sequences without the vision of Roddenberry.

@bilups:
Iagree.
This looks great and I'm a devout trekie. I can't see how a Trekie can be bitchy about consistency.
In TOS they left the galaxy. In TOS they flew around in an "interglactic" ship. In TOS they flew from one side of the Galaxy to the other over and over. In TOS the klingons looked like normal people. In TOS they obviously had no Prime Directive. In TOS Spock was specatcularly illogical and brain dead retarded. "Captain offering these greedy warlords a gift is emotional and illogical why would you do such a thing?" Because Spock anyone who has have a logical cell in his body understands how to be diplomatic and appeal to someone's emotional 'weakness' to get what you want.
TOS just needs to be patted on the head and ignored. It was anti-scientific. It was overtly religious. It was terribly misogynistic. It did not stand up to the test of time like TNG and all of the Star Trek canon that grew up from TNG's world. Picard's world won. IT is canon now. DS9 matches it. Voyager matches it. Enterprise Matches it. The odd man out of star trek is the original series.

Having a kiddie introduce us to Kirk is about as lame as watching Anakin Skywalker as a bubbly 8-year old. If he was that young... wouldn't he have said something like, "My name's Kirk... Jimmy Kirk." ??
The way they did it was just gay. I hope that scene doesn't make it into the actual movie.

@wizzledizzle: C'mon man, just read about the films. It is completely different this time. Especially in this last one, he sleeps with one field agent, and the main female character he only kisses once right near the end. There isn't even a bikini scene! Much more tastefully done.

first of all spock looks gay and femme...maybe because his bangs are cut too low (when compared to the original?)
and that spell of COMEDY in the trailer from that comedian guy (forget his name) is going to ruin the movie.. why because you're going to be expecting smartass comments from the smartass comedian guy you've seen in a dozen comedy movies.... perhaps if someone else had the same lines in wouldnt be too IN-YOUR-FACE distracting

@CaptCaveman: This.
People were freaking out over the BSG re-imagining. Yes, it was new and different, and yes, Starbuck is a chick.
But after four seasons, I say it's probably the best sci-fi series ever made.
I'll reserve judgement until I see the movie. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the old trek-- In fact, I don't want a scene-by-scene reshoot of Wrath of Khan. I want the darker, edgier trek that we saw in the last few seasons of DS9- equal parts cerebral and action.

For fuck sake, I'm a pretty big nerd but God damn, you fanboys need to lighten the hell up. They don't make these movies often because they don't make a ton of money. How many times can the 10,000 of you keep paying to see a film in hopes that it will stay open in locations like Oshkosh, WI? Perhaps if you appeal to another group of "humanoids" you might actually be happy with the end result (or get laid for once). You guys sound like the fucking model railroad club in high school. You can be pretty lame, we know it but if you diversify and give the rest of us a reason to pop a boner when the steam comes out of the main engine we might actually give you and your nerd crap some credibility. Or do you prefer sour cream and onion Jays and your Mom's basement still? Your call.

It looks cool but the new Kirk is a bit TOO James Dean. Handling a starship would be considered a responsibility of monumental proportions, not to be handed over to some biker boy.

@lunchtimereader:
Have you never watched a single TOS episode?
Every single episode had Kirk getting into a fight with someone and losing his shirt. How many times did they do that dramatic music when Kirk talks to a chick or when someone is about to die.
Star Trek has ALWAYS been an action/drama. Just like every Bond Movie.
Personally i agree with Abrams. When they do the 10 minute flyby of the Enterprise in the first movie I was totally in awe. If he does even the first Star Trek movie justice I will be ecstatic.

@OMG! Ponies!: You've got to be kidding. Considering how much Canadians (studios, actors, location filming) pour into the "American" movie industry, that's an incredibly silly comment to make. And I did feel annoyed that I didn't get to see the Star Trek trailer when I watched Bond. Not really sure why it wasn't included.

@MarieCorcyra: "What happened to the gadgets and the style/ sophistication..."
Well now, in the books - "Hoo boy, we got ourselves one a them REEDER types a-talkin'!"
Yes. As I was saying, in the books - you know, the original source material - there was a bare minimum of both gadgets and style. Not to say they didn't exist, but the recent Casino Royale is far closer to the character and the world of Bond as created by Ian Fleming. Bond was a bit of a brute in both work and play. The constant smooth talk, continuous quippery and the bristling arsenal of gadgets were all Hollywood's additions.

@FatalisticDread: "What was the last GREAT sci-fi film? I can't remember. Nominees?"
Dunno about the very last... off the top of my head I can think of a few recent ones: 12 Monkeys, The Matrix (but only if taken as a standalone) and Primer. Minority Report was decent but I'd hesitate to call it GREAT. Pitch Black wasn't capital-G GREAT but it sure was great. Serenity was pretty good but in all honesty that's because of the TV series that came before it.
You're right that there are very few truly good science fiction flicks, and keeping it to recent times only narrows that small field.

@mikepetel: It's very easy for noise distortion and poor recording conditions to make "T" sound like "S". Or even for the "t" to drop out entirely, leaving the "s" at the end of "James" to sound like the beginning of the next word too.

@majortom1029: @FatalisticDread: IMO, Star Trek doesn't need (they may want, but that's another story) to appeal to the masses...the Trekkers/Trekkies take care of that with the box office and convention sales.
Obviously not. If this were true there would still be TNG movies coming out. The fans didn't support it.
Real fans see a movie even if it sucks, so that they can see the next movie. Enough real fans saw Star Trek I that they made Star Trek II. Enough real fans saw III that they made IV. Enough real fans watched ST:TNG as a TV show that it had time to find its legs and become interesting.
But if you didn't like "Enterprise" and support it, you let the franchise die on TV forever. And if this doesn't succeed, the franchise is dead in the movie theaters too.
Stuff your opinion up your butt and see this movie, or don't dare call yourself a Trekker ever again.

Star Trek has always been divided between fans who want big action versus the big concept. Big action usually involved some space war with: Klingons, Borg, forgettable humanoids that vaguely look like Russian mobsters, and unforgettably, a big planet eating doobie. Big concept includes anything with time travel -including a sarcastic, cloacal time portal, god-like matter/energy shifting beings, and the criminal justice systems of alien cultures. Great science fiction mixes the two to keep the reds and blues states of science fiction fandom to sit still. JJ Adams is definitely on the red meat side of things but tries to play at Ridley Scott with the cool cityscapes, the French-anime costumes and hairdos, and the fixation of creating monsters that are just blow ups of tiny parasites that dig around your lower regions. But the Star Trek franchise is in desperate need of reinvigoration. After downloading Enterprise -I am stuck at the 5th episode of the first season unable to bring myself to devote valuable geekout time away from Terminator -Sarah Connor Chronicles and rewatching Battlestar. So will Spock be reinvented as a bi-specied palimpsest of his old self, kind of like a Barack Obama (who is vaguely Vulcan, by the way) in the blue geek squad shirt? Will Kirk be be the old skirt chasing, commanding from his gut like a rejuvenated McCain or will he be just Bourne/Bond/Batman in the command gold.
I think the cool thing will be how they bring back ships from the original Star Fleet Manual (remember those -I've got mine in a special place in my study). All reimaginings reflect the times that they are created in and the temper of the author. For myself, I will keep an open mind.
